What Does Whoever Believes In Him Should Not Perish But Have Everlasting Life Mean

For God So Loved the World

Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life means anyone who believes in Jesus will have access to the kingdom of God. You cannot get the Fathers attention if you dont believe in the Son. We must believe, trust, obey and follow Him wholeheartedly.

He has promised that we will not perish or die but have life everlasting. Gods gift of salvation can only be realized through faith, we must receive Him and believe in His death and resurrection.

What Is The Connection Between Eternal Life And Obedience Matthew 1: 1619

NOTE: Christ does not lessen the claims of the law. In unmistakable language He presents obedience to it as the condition of eternal lifethe same condition that was required of Adam before his fall. The Lord expects no less of the soul now than He expected of man in Paradise, perfect obedience, unblemished righteousness. The requirement under the covenant of grace is just as broad as the requirement made in Edenharmony with Gods law, which is holy, just, and good.Christs Object Lessons, 391.

Breaking Down The Key Parts Of John : 16

#1 For God Jesus has been explaining to Nicodemus, The Son of Man must be lifted up so that those who look on him can be saved . Now he explains Gods motive.

#2 so loved the world Though he has wrath for sin and hates it , he loves the world and the people he has created. Righteousness demands that the world be judged, but love moves God to offer a way to be saved from the coming wrath. Further, God saw a way to bring men and women to himself in peace and in friendship.

#3 that he gave his one and only Son, God the Son was not created. He always existed with the Father and the Spirit . Jesus the man was begotten by God and Mary, fully God and fully man, in order to be the perfect sacrifice. It is astounding that the eternal Son of God, the Lamb that was slain since the foundation of the world, had to be born a baby and grow up like everyone else.

#4 That whoever believes in him John 6:28-29 says, Then they asked him, What must we do to do the works God requires? Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent. Before we can call out to God for salvation, we must believe. Before we can believe, we must be born again .

#5 shall not perish, but have everlasting life. Believers will not bear the wrath of God for their sin. Jesus has imputed his righteousness to us by taking our sin on himself. Everlasting life is difficult to grasp, but there is hardly a more clear promise in Scripture.

God Must Provide The Answer

To this question I must needs have the answer. I must have Gods answer. Man cannot convince me. A human answer cannot possibly satisfy me. Nothing less will do than the answer from the mouth of God Himself. Then only will I have peace, when I hear His own voice, My son, my daughter, I, Jehovah God, love you!

Let this personal question be before your consciousness as you contemplate this Word of God. For not only is it true that you urgently need an answer to this question, but it is also true that as this Word of God comes to you, you shall be confronted by that question and shall have to give an answer to it. You cannot escape it.

Gods Love For Us Is Everlasting And Sacrificial

For God so loved The World

Our bond with God has been a story about fatherly love from the beginning. God created the world and everything in it out of love, declaring His creations good and blessing it . God showed His love for mankind in particular by making us in His image and entrusting us to be caretakers of the world .

Emphasizing how important it was for humanity to live in love, Jesus Himself summarized the whole of Scripture into two commands about love: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets, Jesus continued, hang on these two commandments .

Expanding upon this binding theme of love, the Bible declares simply but powerfully that, God is love . When Scripture speaks of Gods love for us, it speaks of the highest level of love or, agape love.

Agape is the Greek word for the highest form of love. Agape love is everlasting and sacrificial, freely given whether or not the giver receives the same level of love in return. Agape love is the perfect love that God showed for humanity when He sent His only Son to be sacrificed in atonement for our sins so that, through our belief in Jesus, we may have eternal life.

The Greatness Of Gods Love

Oh, if you would ask the question, How much did God love? you must not try to limit the limitless character of that love by the quantitative characterization that God loved all men. After all, that is still attempting to portray the infinite love of God in finite terms. Indeed, the love of God is infinite. It is limitless. It knows no bounds. And my text sets this forth not in terms of those who were the objects of that love, but in the amazing and mysterious terms of the revelation of that love. How much did God love? The text gives the answer: God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son!

God gave Him! He gave Him freely. He gave Him, not because He was obligated to do so, but because He wanted to do so, wanted to reveal His infinite love. He gave Him not because that world deserved that gift, but of free, sovereign grace. And He gave Him up, that is, He gave Him as a sacrifice for sin, gave Him up unto death, the death of the cross, and poured out over His head all the vials of His fierce and holy wrath. Mystery of mysteries! God gave up God! Ah, do you not see that this is just exactly the tremendously profound thrust of this Word of God? Gods love of the world cost Him something! It cost God his all!

And oh, how I hope you Bethlehem believers know that such a foundational verse is not just for beginners. It is high-level, high-voltage shock therapy for marriage struggles and single struggles and teenage struggles. So lets turn first to the seven big words in verse 16.

What Does He Gave His Only Begotten Son Mean

Bible Verses For God So Loved The World

He gave His only begotten Son mean God gave His only uniquely born Son, one that His birth is of a kind to die for our sins. John 1:1 says,In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. God was in existence from the beginning. He was the word and nothing was created without His knowledge .

Jesuss birth and conception were one of its kind. It was unique, yet not a created being, neither was He made. His kind of birth had never occurred and will never happen.

John 1:14 mentioned how unique He is And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. He only became flesh to save us.

The above verses depict that Jesus is God in the flesh. He was given to proffer salvation to the world.

Bible Commentary For John : 16

Wesley’s Notes for John 3:16

3:16 Yea, and this was the very design of God’s love in sending him into the world. Whosoever believeth on him – With that faith which worketh by love, and hold fast the beginning of his confidence steadfast to the end. God so loved the world – That is, all men under heaven even those that despise his love, and will for that cause finally perish. Otherwise not to believe would be no sin to them. For what should they believe? Ought they to believe that Christ was given for them? Then he was given for them. He gave his only Son – Truly and seriously. And the Son of God gave himself, #Gal 4:4|, truly and seriously.

People’s Bible Notes for John 3:16

Joh 3:16,17 For God so loved the world, etc. There is no sweeter verse in the Bible. It declares: That God is love. That he loved the world instead of hating it. That he “so” loved that he gave his Son. The Son did not come to appease the Father’s wrath, but the Father sent him because he loved so well. That he came to keep men from perishing.

Whom Does God Love

Now it is perfectly obvious that both of the above views cannot be true. Even a child can understand this. It is either or. Either God loves all men or he loves only His elect. It is also perfectly obvious that those who maintain the above views both claim to preach the gospel when they proclaim these views. Both the Arminian and the Reformed preacher will tell you that he is preaching the gospel. That is to be expected. No preacher will come right out and tell you that what he is preaching is not according to the Bible. They both claim, The Bible says Further, it is also evident, unless you would maintain the impossible position that God contradicts Himself, that one or the other of the above views is according to the Scriptures, and constitutes the true preaching of the gospel. And whoever proclaims what is not according to the Scriptures has no business to pretend that he is preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

And again, note this very bold statement:

If the Church is unwilling to say in any sense that Christ died for all men and refuses to say to unbelievers, in addition to God loves you,Christ died for you, it places the infinite love of God under an illegitimate restriction.

God Watched His Son Die Out Of Love For Us

Jesus Christ freed humanity from the grip of sin by the lashes that dug into his skin as the Roman soldiers whipped him . Jesus freed us from the condemnation of the Old Testament laws by being beaten, mocked, spat upon, and made to carry His torture device on His back to Calvary .

Jesus offered us the hope of eternal salvation by Himself, dying a criminals death, hung up on a pole to perish slowly and painfully. God not only watched His Son go through all of this, He knew it would happen.

As Jesus father, God knew the physical anguish that Jesus would suffer. Yet God loved us so much that He willed it to happen. God also knew the mental anguish that Jesus would suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane.

In fact, the human aspect of Jesus was so distraught at what awaited Him that Our Savior sweated blood as He prayed that God take this cup from Him . At that moment, God sent down an angel to strengthen Jesus because it was the Fathers will that the Crucifixion happen for us, for our salvation, despite the horror Jesus willingly endured because of it .

Set against this backdrop of Jesus Passion, the words, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son take on a crystal clear and heart wrenching reality that should bend the knee of even the casual believer. This is what perfect love, selfless and sacrificial love in action, looks like.

The Profound And Blessed Mystery

God so Loved the World

The text speaks of a profound and blessed mystery, a mystery which becomes more profound and more blessed according as we, poor, miserable, sinful creatures of the dust, pause to consider this wonder.

Consider for a moment the implications of that one, simple, and oft-repeated truth: God loved the world.

This means that in His sovereign and eternal and unchangeable thoughts God beheld that world in its perfect beauty in Christ Jesus, the Firstborn of every creature, and united that world with His own divine Father-heart in the bond of perfectness. His heart goes out to that world. He is attracted to that world. Even when in time that world was in itself lost in sin and misery, and lay under the curse, God still loved the world. He longed for that world. He could not rest, so to speak, until He sought that world, saved it, drew it unto Himself with cords of love, and clasped it to His heart, safe in the harbor of eternal life, where He might bestow all the tokens of His love upon that world in the fullness of perfection.

Consider too: God loved the world. Not only did the Father, the First Person of the Holy Trinity, love that world.

Amid the whirl of its activities and messages February has long been recognized as a time of special celebration of love. This has arisen largely due to the legends surrounding a certain St. Valentine, who is said to have lived in the third century. An oft-cited story has it that a certain priest named Valentine was imprisoned for his Christian activities. One account maintains that just before his martyrdom he sent a letter to his ladylove, which he signed, From your Valentine.

John : 16 Esv Biblical Translation Says:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

The difference between the three translations is that NKJV mentions Only begotten Son NIV states One and only Son while ESV says, His only Son

Only Begotten used in NKJV is an English translation of a Greek word called Monogenes used to describe a childs uniqueness with his parents.

You will agree with me that Jesuss conception and birth was one of its kind, unique in nature. While One and only Son and His only Son used in both NIV and ESV respectively, means only one of His class, none else. However, the three translations have the same meaning.
