Praying For Others Grows Us Spiritually

Pray for One Another James 5:16 | 59 Series Bible Study

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God .

Paul understood that prayer was instrumental in helping people become more like Jesus. In other words, Paul didnt simply assume that the Philippians would automatically become more like Jesus. He knew that, in some ways, their spiritual growth was directly connected to his prayers.

So, whats the best thing you can do if you want someone to be more like Jesus? Pray for them. Pray that God would increase their love and knowledge and discernment. Pray that they would be filled with the fruit of righteousness.

When we pray for one another, God shapes us more into the image of Jesus Christ.

    Prayer Is A Powerful Gift

Recently, I had a busy week and things were stressed. So many thoughts were swirling around my head. Days of working ahead to complete all my projects before a week-long trip out of state had taken their toll. I was exhausted. And, the needs of so many others weighed on my heart. I cycled through them in my mind:

    • A teacher at my daughters school in critical condition in the hospital.
    • Friends who were laid off unexpectedly.
    • My mom just home from having surgery and my dad trying to care for her.
    • My husband trying to make difficult decisions for his company.
    • My children facing choices outside my control.
    • News stories that broke my heart for the pain and injustice in the world.

I prayed for all of these people as concern for them flooded my heart. A friend commented on how heavy my spirit felt. It was all that I could do not to cry. I was so worried about the pain that everyone else was experiencing and I was blind to my own. I was carrying around the burdens of so many, but the weight was getting much too heavy.

What Are Intercessory Prayers And How Do They Work

Bible Study: Pray for One Another

Intercessory prayers are prayers offered on someone elseâs behalf. Intercessory prayers are sacrificial prayers that focus on others rather than yourself. The mediatorâs job might take many different shapes. The mediator could be praying for a loved one, a friend, a colleague, or the entire country. Depending on what God has laid on the individualâs heart, the mediator could be praying to lead the person to Christ, pray for healing, provision, and a variety of other things.

Because of Jesus Christâs death, this mediation is possible. We can approach the throne of Grace with our petitions because of Jesusâ death and resurrection.

    Jesus Example Of Intercessory Prayer

In the midst of His greatest trial, Jesus prayed fervently. What would you have prayed about when facing torture and death? Its fascinating to see what was on Jesus mind as He prayed, not only for Himself , but for His disciples and for us:

As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me .

Jesus did not just focus inward, but by His words and His prayers showed that He wanted love and joy and peace and patience and all the fruit of Gods Spirit for His followers.

He knew that His trial would be their trial. He knew that when He, the good Shepherd, was struck, the sheep will be scattered . He prayed for themand usout of love and deep concern.

Jesus Christ is our Intercessor . He lived a human life of trials and challenges, so He understands what we are going through. He is at our side and can sympathize with our weaknesses, and He makes it possible for us to receive the mercy and help we need when we approach the throne of grace . And He wants us to learn to be intercessors too.

    Who Should We Pray For

God gives us instructions to pray for others in several places in the Bible. The apostle James tells us to pray for one another, that you may be healed .

The apostle Paul encourages us to intercede for Church members and ministers, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saintsand for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains .

Paul urges us that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence .

So we are even to pray for government leaders and others who may not know we exist and who havent asked us to pray for them.

Jesus Christ even commanded, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you .

Why Should We Pray For One Another

We should pray for one another because we need each other. Jesus never intended for us to live the Christian life alone.

So often I forget just how much I need others. I need to live my life out with others and I need others to pray for me.

God tells us to lift one another up. We need one another to get through this life. To get through afflictions. To get through temptation.

God tells us to pray for one another. God never tells us to do anything he doesnt intend to respond to. He would not tell us to pray for one another if he didnt intend to answer those prayers.
