Matthew 2: 42 Context

39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me No Food I Was Thirsty And You Gave Me No Drink

Matthew 25 does not end with the parable of the talents, but it is immediately followed by the below unparabolical passage, which is directly connected to the three parables we previously read:

Some are quick to dismiss the above passage as referring to others and not to us, as we are saved by grace through faith and not by works. I would happily accept and it is true that I did it for years this reasoning, if I did not see the following problems with it:

To whom was the Lord speaking when He said the above words as well as the three parables of Matthew 24 and 25 we read? This is very obvious from the context. The teaching of the Lord started as an answer to the following question of the disciples:

Matthew 24:3″As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Then after He tells them about the false christs, the false prophets, the abomination of desolation etc., He says:

Matthew 26:1-2″When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

James uses the same example of 1 John 3:16-18 and makes it even louder:

And James 1:27″Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

Breaking Down The Key Parts Of Matthew 2: 40

#1 The King will reply, truly I tell you, The King is Jesus at the judgment in his gloryon his glorious throne . The most important aspect of his judgment will be the opening of the Book of Life. The sheep will have their names written there . The goats will not. This signifies belief vs unbelief. Rather than see what follows as a kind of salvation by works, one should understand that true believers will live their lives in Christ and unto him.

#2 whatever you did Jesus said of the sheep, For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me . The goats, the unbelievers failed to do the very same.

#3 for one of the least of these There are few who will not help a great or important person if given the chance. But the humble will stoop for those who cannot return the favor . Christ is careful to align himself with these similarly to how he upholds children.

#4 brothers and sisters of mine, It seems he primarily means Christians. But there is a sense that he also means nonbelievers who are in need as well. We are certainly taught that God sends the sun and rain on the wicked as well as the good and that we should be like our Father in Heaven, even blessing our enemies .

Bible Verses About Hunger

For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

The young lions do lack and suffer hunger But they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing.

He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.

A workers appetite works for him,For his hunger urges him on.

Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord God,When I will send a famine on the land,Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water,But rather for hearing the words of the Lord.

I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

He has filled the hungry with good things And sent away the rich empty-handed.

Bible Commentary For Matthew 2: 35

Wesley’s Notes for Matthew 25:35

25:35 I was hungry, and ye gave me meat I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink – All these works of outward mercy suppose faith and love, and must needs he accompanied with works of spiritual mercy. But works of this kind the Judge could not mention in the same manner. He could not say, I was in error, and ye recalled me to the truth I was in sin, and ye brought me to repentance. In prison – Prisoners need to be visited above all others, as they are commonly solitary and forsaken by the rest of the world.

People’s Bible Notes for Matthew 25:35

Mt 25:35,36 For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat, etc. The reason why those on the right hand are given the kingdom is now shown. They had ministered unto the Savior. The deeds of loving kindness that the truly benevolent do his needy disciples are named as having been done to Christ. It should be noted that the duties named are such duties as every one can perform. Chrysostom says: “He said not I was sick and ye healed me or in prison and ye set me free but “ye visited me and came unto me”.” A real, personal service of Christ is implied, one involving some sacrifice of ease, time and property.

Encouraging Bible Verses For The Homeless And Hungry

Here are ten encouraging Bible verses for the homeless and hungry.

Proverbs 14:31 Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

Remember the account of the rich man and Lazarus? The rich man must have walked past Lazarus day after day and saw this poor beggar man but did nothing to help him. After death it seems the positions of both are switched. The poor man is now in Paradise or in the bosom of Abraham but the rich man is in torment and in thirst amidst the flames of fire. He remembers his life and now wants to warn his family but it is far too late because he oppressed the poor so long that he insulted his Maker and after his death, came his judgment .

Deuteronomy 15:11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.

The Old Testament laws are so much superior than the welfare system we have today because the law told those that lived in the land that they must open wide your hand to your brother but also to the needy and the poor, in your land. This law never limits the giving to only our neighbors and brothers but to everyone who is in need.

Proverbs 10:3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd I shall not want.

32And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

25:40 Inasmuch as ye did it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it to me – What encouragement is here to assist the household of faith? But let us likewise remember to do good to all men.25:41 Depart into the everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels – Not originally for you: you are intruders into everlasting fire.25:44 Then will they answer – So the endeavour to justify themselves, will remain with the wicked even to that day!
