What Does The Bible Say About Your Body, Soul, And Spirit?

Death Of The Spirit?Testimony Of ScriptureAdam

Made For Eternity

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of humans yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end .

Implies Continual Life

and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it .

Existence Of A Place Of The Dead

The grave below is all astir to meet you at your coming it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you – all those who were leaders in the world it makes them rise from their thrones – all those who were kings over the nations .

Enoch And Elijah

Enoch walked with God then he was no more, because God took him away .

As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven .

New Testament

Abraham, Isaac, And Jacob

But about the resurrection of the dead – have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living .

When People Die Scripture Says Either That The Soul Departs Or The Spirit Departs

When Rachel died, the Bible says, Her soul was departing . Elijah prays that the dead childs soul would come into him again , and Isaiah predicts that the Servant of the Lord would pour out his soul to death . In the New Testament God tells the rich fool, This night your soul is required of you .

Other times death is viewed as the spirit returning to God. So David can pray, in words later quoted by Jesus on the cross, Into your hand I commit my spirit . At death, the spirit returns to God who gave it . When Jesus was dying, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit , and likewise Stephen prayed before he died, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit .

A trichotomist might argue that these passages are still treating the soul and spirit as different things, for when a person dies both soul and spirit go to heaven. But Scripture never says that a persons soul and spirit departed or went to heaven or were yielded to God. If soul and spirit were separate things, we would expect that would be affirmed somewhere, if only to assure the reader that no essential part of the person is left behind. But the biblical authors do not seem to care whether they say that the soul departs or the spirit departs at death, for both seem to mean the same thing.

What Is The Body

This is perhaps the easiest part about our existence to comprehend. We understand what it means: see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. We know it means to witness a beautiful sunset and take in all the lovely different hues in one single sky with our eyes.

We know what it means to enjoy the sensational warmth of a hug or the way it feels when were being kissed. We love tantalizing our tastebuds with favorite foods, and we enjoy different smells that invigorate or motivate us like the smell of a campfire or the fresh smell of earth after a torrential rainfall.

However, this physical body however isnt meant to last. God gave us physical bodies to function on this earth. In fact, God has a lot to say about the body He gave you:

Psalm 139:14: For you formed my inward parts you knitted me together in my mothers womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are Gods masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20: Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

In simple termsour bodies were made to carry us through this world. Each of us have a birthdate and an expiration date when we will leave these worn and weathered bodies for Gods Kingdom, should we choose to believe in Him!

Biblical Support For The View Of Humanity

The scriptural basis for this view can be found in both the Old and New Testaments.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul .

From this verse, we can learn that God created mans body from the dust of the ground, and the word breath refers to the spirit , and through these creative works, man became a living soul .

In Job 12:10, we can also see the distinction between soul and spirit, in which the life of every creature is referred to as soul , while the breath of every human being as spirit .

This revelation was affirmed by Paul, as he wrote what turned out to be the most popular verse that supports this view:

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ .

This verse clearly tells us that humans are composed of body and soul and spirit .

What Is The Difference Between Soul And Spirit

the spirit, soul, and body connection

It is a blessing that we have three parts, the body, the soul, and the spirit. All of these parts have specific functions. The body is our physical functions and here we feel our physical senses such as the sense of sight, taste, smell, hear, and touch. The soul on the other hand is our humanity that makes us feel emotions. It is our way to magnify God through our human limitations.

Finally, the spirit is our spiritual and deeper connection with the Lord. We express our love to God and Jesus Christ through our spirit because this is one of the gifts that Christ gave us when he became human and died for our sins. And thus, we can only use the spirit if we believe in God and Christ and if we do the ways of the spirit.

Body Soul And Spirit In The Bible

There are a few places in the Bible where the body, soul, and spirit are mentioned. One of these is in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, as written, Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If we delve into this verse, it clearly states that we are composed of three parts: The body, the soul, and the spirit. The verse also uses the word and, which in the original Greek language means to differ from each other. Thus, this clearly states that each part is different and plays a different role in us.

It is easy to distinguish the body as physical, which means using the five senses the sense of sight, the sense of hearing, the sense of taste, the sense of smell, and the sense of touch. The spirit and soul are much more difficult because they seem similar but are actually very different. They have different functions in our lives as Christians, as it is written in Hebrews 4:12,

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

It is obvious in this verse that the two are separate and what is apparent is that the Word of God divides these two parts from each other.

How Are The Body Soul And Spirit Connected

Our body, soul, and spirit are created by God for His glory. They are connected to each other in relation to our well-being, to our work and ministry, to our worship or devotion to God, and ultimately to Gods salvation.

This question assumes a tripartite nature of human being, which consists of a material part and immaterial parts , in contrast to a bipartite view, which believes that man was originally a unity in the duality of body and soul/spirit .

Gods Intention For The Three Parts Of Man

Now lets read the last section of the note, which explains Gods intention for all three parts of our being:

In the spirit, God as the Spirit dwells in the soul, our self dwells and in the body, the physical senses dwell. God sanctifies us, first, by taking possession of our spirit through regeneration second, by spreading Himself as the life-giving Spirit from our spirit into our soul to saturate and transform our soul and last, by enlivening our mortal body through our soul and transfiguring our body by His life power .

Gods intention concerning us is that we would contain and express Him. But to express God, we need to be filled with Him. When we believed in Jesus Christ, we received Him and were regenerated, or born again, in our spirit. But He doesnt want to only fill our spirit. Thats just the beginning.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 tells us, The God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly. He sanctifies us by spreading into and saturating our whole being, starting from our spirit, continuing into our soul, and eventually including our body. By being wholly filled with God in every part of our being, God can be expressed through us.

The Holy Spirit Brings Our Godly Human Spirit Into Us

Matthew 26:41-42 Bible teaching – Spirit Soul and the Body

So the Holy Spirit has supernatural qualities as well as having the human qualities that God originally wanted humans to have.

The Holy Spirit thus makes us into the human being that God wants us to be.

As long as our old human nature dies.

PHILIPPIANS 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

ROMANS 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye

transformed by the renewing of your mind,

Growing in grace means that Gods human nature grows within us as our old human nature dies.

The second step is holiness as the Holy Spirit clears away our sinful thoughts and behaviour.

The evil within our selfish fallen human nature so contaminates our motives that we actually have no good in us due to our own efforts. Bias, self-gain, and prejudice are our corrupt counselors.

ROMANS 7:18 For I know that in me dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I find not.

:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

ROMANS 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

ROMANS 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him,

that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Believing in Jesus and the Bible enables us to overcome sin.

In Relation To Our Worship Or Devotion To God

It is a common belief that God is more concerned with our inward being than outward appearance. While it is true that the Lord looks at the heart , this does not mean that He is not concerned with our bodies.

In fact, the Bible tells us that we truly and properly worship God by offering our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, and pleasing to Him:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of Gods mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God this is your true and proper worship .

As believers, our bodies are temples of Gods Spirit, so we are to honor Him with our bodies and offer every part of ourselves to Him as an instrument of righteousness .

When we come to God in worship, we express our thanksgiving with our souls through songs of praise to Him, for who He is and for what He has done in our lives, as Mary said, My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior .

Now, interestingly, just as our physical bodies are endowed with five senses, our souls are also endowed with spiritual senses as we are born again by putting our faith in Jesus Christ.

Keys To Understanding The Spirit Soul & Body

By kcmblogsite

What is the soul of man? Is it the same as his spirit? Does knowing the difference really matter? The answer to these questions will help you to a greater understanding of yourself-spirit, soul, and body. Understanding the relationship between thee three elements will help you toward a victorious Christian life.

Christianity is not just another religion. It is the life of God abiding within and flowing out of the believer. Other religions leave you the same old sorry person you were before. But the wonderful thing about the Christian life is that it will completely transform you. But what part of you is actually changed?

#1 Youre made up of a spirit, soul and body

When you are born again, your spirit is instantly transformed into the image of God. The Spirit is that part of you which takes on the nature of God. According to the Word, once that happens you should immediately start the process of changing your soul. The Bible calls it renewing the mind.

Your soul is your mind, your will, and your emotions. Spiritual growth is determined by how much your soul has been changed by the Word of God. Nothing is wrong with your spirit if you are born again the life of God is in there. You are indwelt by the Holy Ghost. But you are hindered from living a spiritual life by a soul that thinks like the world instead of like God. This is true because your will determines your actions.

Your body is just your earthsuit.

May Your Spirit Soul And Body Be Well 1 Thessalonians : 23

June 8, 2015 By Dale Fletcher

May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23

You may be familiar with this verse. To many, it implies that we are a living spirit which has a soul that lives in a body three parts that make up our whole being. I happen to agree with this view of how God designed us for spirit, mind, body health.

In this verse, Paul encourages us to attend to all three aspects of who we are. And so we try to do this the best we can, but often in our own strength. And many of us fail miserably at this. The next verse holds the key to being successful at attending to our spirit, mind, body health.

The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. Thessalonians 5:24

This verse is there to remind you that God will do this for you. His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, living in and through you is who will see to it that you live a lifestyle that promotes good health in spirit, soul and body.

Whats required from you is to have faith that he will. Faith as small as a mustard seed. You see, its not the magnitude of your faith thats most important. Its not so much having a strong and unshakeable faith as it is in having faith and trust in a loving, and grace-giving, and powerful God that is the key. As you have this perspective, this mindset, this attitude, and you place your dependence on Gods Spirit as he lives through you, he will enable you to live a healthy lifestyle.

What Is The Soul

Spirit, Soul and Body, This is Who You Are

Many have debated whether or not there is a difference between the soul and spirit. But there are several scriptures that clearly separate the soul and spirit.

One key verse is Hebrews 4:12 where the author says, For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

In the simplest terms, a soul is made up of our mind, emotions, and free will. In Hebrew nephesh means breathing creature its most basic definition. It can translate to several different meanings, such as soul, mind, or life.

Our soul has a tendency to be self-centered whereas our spirit was created exclusively to communicate, interact, and commune with God.

Yet, our soul and spirit are intertwined just as Hebrews 4:12 references above. While everyone’s soul is active, its not the same for everyones spirit because of the great fall caused by Adams sin.

When Adam sinned, his spirit died and was separated by God but God has a plan to redeem not only Adam but all of mankind through His Son, Jesus. Only through Christ can our spirits be reconciled and connected to God.

Jesus also teaches in why the spirit is vital, For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul?
