Date And Place Of Writing
The book was probably written in the early spring of a.d. 57. Very likely Paul was on his third missionary journey, ready to return to Jerusalem with the offering from the mission churches for poverty-stricken believers in Jerusalem . In 15:26 it is suggested that Paul had already received contributions from the churches of Macedonia and Achaia, so he either was at Corinth or had already been there. Since he had not yet been at Corinth when he wrote 1 Corinthians and the collection issue had still not been resolved when he wrote 2 Corinthians , the writing of Romans must follow that of 1,2 Corinthians .
The most likely place of writing is either Corinth or Cenchrea because of references to Phoebe of Cenchrea and to Gaius, Paul’s host , who was probably a Corinthian . Erastus may also have been a Corinthian .
The Book Of Romans And Old Testament Theology
Romans has often been described as an exposition of the Old Testament in view of the Gospel of Christ this is certainly an accurate description in view of the pattern that emerges. The Gospel of Christ tells how sinful people can find access into the heavenlies through sacrificial atonement. It is clear that this also was the focus of Israels sacrificial system. It is little wonder that the book draws upon the pattern of those ancient sacrifices.
There were three main types or groups of sacrifices in ancient Israels worship: those that made Expiation or atonement , those that were for Celebration , and those that were for Dedication . But essentially there was the forgiveness and acceptance by God through atoning sacrifices, the celebration of being at peace with God in the fellowship or peace offering, and the dedication to worship and serve God through the dedication or meal offering.
The Book of Romans employs this basic theological pattern of Atonement by God, Peace with God, and Dedication to God, as it weaves a theological argument from the beginning of Gods work until the end. The following overview will show how the argument of the book unfolds:
1. In chapter 1 after giving the introduction and purpose of the book, Paul surveys natural revelation via creation, noting that the creation rejected the Creator for the satisfaction of baser instincts. This section is an exposition on the early part of Genesis.

Week 1: Final Summary Of The Gospel Of The Righteousness Of God
All along, Paul has been exulting. That is to say, all along he has been worshiping as he is writing. Paul has been so captured by Gods grace that he cannot instruct without celebrating, rebuke without grieving, and command without assuring. He is so utterly convinced of Gods deep love in the grace of Jesus Christ that worship regularly erupts from his heart. He wants it to erupt in our hearts too that is the point of his writing in the first place. As he gets to the end of his letter to the Roman church, then, he bursts out one final time in praise of God. This short prayer encapsulates the main themes of what he has written. And he does all this as an act of unabashed praise.
What is the ultimate point of Pauls letter to the Romans? The same as the Bibles ultimate point: that Gods glory through Jesus Christ would be magnified everywhere at every time.
Romans 16:2527 is a doxology in which Paul gathers up in a few brief lines, as a final song of praise to God, all that he has said in his letter to the Romans.

Romans is one of the most well-known books of the Bible.
Youve probably heard a hundred sermons from the book of Romans. You might list Romans 8 as one of your favorite passages. You might be aware that Romans contains some of the key passages on predestination, the doctrine of justification, the doctrine of sanctification, and other core doctrines of the church. And you probably know the role a verse from Romans played in Martin Luthers articulation of the 95 theses that launched the Reformation.

Romans 8 is one of the most powerful passages of Scripture. Up to this point, Paul has not highlighted the work of the Holy Spirit in the believers life, but in this great textperhaps the highest peak among all the spiritual heights visited in the epistlethe role of the Spirit in applying the saving work of Christ in justification and beyond begins to take vibrant shape. The Righteousness Of God In Revealing The Unrighteousness Of Man
In the following verses, I believe Paul is laying out the gospel in a very orderly, sequential way. In essence, Paul is setting before us a theology of the gospel in a way that demonstrates the righteousness of God. He begins with mans sin, moves to Gods solution, and then expands the gospel to its logical and necessary goalsanctification: the living out of Gods righteousness through the lives of those who believe in the gospel.
Pauls purpose in this section is not only to demonstrate mans sin, and thus his need for a righteousness that is of God, but to show us that mans sin actually demonstrates Gods righteousness. This is precisely what Paul concludes in chapter 3:
But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? .
Pauls point is made with two major thrusts. The first is given in 1:18-32 the second follows the first in 2:1-8. The first thrust seems to be directed toward those who might be considered the heathen, the pagans. A self-righteous Jew would certainly think of the sinners described in chapter 1 as Gentiles. We might call the first category of sinners self-indulgent sinners. The second group of sinners I would call self-righteous sinners.
The Place And Date Of Romans
Based on the material from Acts and the Corinthian epistles, the Book of Romans clearly indicates that it was written from Corinth on Pauls third missionary journey. Paul had never visited Rome but after fulfilling his mission of mercy to Jerusalem, he hoped to go to Rome en route to Spain . At any rate, the date of the book is probably 60 A.D.
The chronological order of the Pauline epistles is about as follows: First and Second Thessalonians, Galatians, First and Second Corinthians, Romans, Colossians, Ephesians, Philippians, Philemon, First Timothy, Titus, and Second Timothy. Romans is placed first among Pauls letters in the New Testament not only because it is his longest work, but because it also furnishes a massive and basic theological frame-work for the whole collection of the apostles writings.

The Righteousness Of God In Saving Unrighteous Men
If God was shown by Paul to be righteous by His response to the unrighteousness of men in judgment , He is now shown to be righteous by His response to mans sin in providing salvation . Just as God is just in judging men impartially, He is also just in saving men impartially. In this section, Gods righteousness is revealed by the gospel, since the gospel is the good news of Gods salvation in Jesus Christ, apart from mans works, and in spite of mans unrighteousness.
The Law should not be seen as something worthless, as something which only condemns men, and thus to be rejected and despised. In chapter 4 Paul seeks to show how in the Old Testament, as in the New, righteousness came through faith and not through Law-keeping. Paul chose Abraham as an example of Old Testament justification by faith. Abraham was a man who lived and who was declared righteous before the Law was even given to men. He could not be saved by Law-keeping, because the Law had not yet been given. He was saved by faith, faith in the promise of God. His faith, not his works, was reckoned to him as righteousness. Abraham was not the exception to salvation by faith, but an example of Old Testament salvation by faith. David also is pointed out as one who believed that his righteousness was in spite of his sin, and due to Gods forgiveness by grace through faith .
