The Book of Revelation is the final book of the Bible. John the Apostle penned this book while incarcerated on the island of Patmos for his Christian convictions. Patmos is an island located on the west coast of Turkey, the continent of Asia. This book is not just a prophetic book, but mainly a letter to the seven churches in the province of Asia. John may intentionally make it mysterious so that the non-believers may not understand the actual message. Moreover, John used Old Testament imagery that may appear to be a strange mystery, but its primary function is to stir up courage and faith in the early church to strengthen the Christian faith as a result of persecution. There is a God who will reward the faith of His people.

A Where Does The Structure Come From
Now, where does that structure come from? Before we look at the Hebrew one, where does that structure come from? The most concrete answer is that that’s the order that Jerome put the Vulgate in. 400 AD, 400 years after the time of Christ, Jerome is translating the Bible into the Latin Vulgate. Vulgate just means vulgar or common, the common Latin tongue, and he uses this form. This form right here, the English Bible form, makes very good sense to our Western tendencies to organize things. We want genre, chronology and authorship. It’s very Western. We’re taught to put all of our round balls or round blocks in one box, all of our square blocks in another one, and all of our triangle ones in another. All the red ones here, the blue ones there, and the yellow ones. We’re taught to organize and think that way. That’s the modern way of thinking. It’s not necessarily an ancient and Semitic way of thinking. There are other ways to think.

There are a few cases of terms that crop up a lot in the books of the bible, but that get confused in everyday language. We just want to focus in on two the different terms for “God’s chosen people” in the Bible, and how God is identified and named.
The terms “Hebrew,” “Jew,” and “Israelite” are often used interchangeably, but they do mean slightly different things, as addressed in this informative post from Chabad.
The first person identified as a Hebrew is Abraham, and so in a sense the Hebrews are descendants of Abraham. More specifically, the etymology of Hebrew implies an individual who is across or has crossed something, and so it is often used to describe the people of Abraham when not in Israel/Canaan, and when resisting cultural pressures and temptations from outside groups. Joseph is called a Hebrew when in Egypt. Lastly, Hebrew is often used to refer to the Hebrew-speaking Jews of Roman Judaea.
Israelite more specifically refers to descendants of Jacob or Israel, the ancestor of the twelve tribes of Israel who later would be split between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It is important to note that Israelite is different from the current national demonym Israeli, indicating a person from the country of Israel.
