Many of us may not consider ourselves rich, but when we have provision for all our daily needs and a relationship with Christ, we are indeed rich beyond measure. When we gamble our resources, we jeopardize both our current resources for daily needs and also our closeness with Christ.
1 Corinthians 6:12 teaches the believer, ll things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
Even if gambling is lawful for Christians, the behavior is not expedient or helpful. In all fleshly addictions, the addict quickly becomes under the power of the substance or behavior.
Betting $5 on one hand of blackjack and winning $10 no longer results in a thrill and the gambler must bet increasingly amounts, just as the drug addict must increase his/her dosage to achieve that desired high the body remembered from the first usage.
If Christians can agree that God supplies all of our necessities of life, why then do we desire to risk a portion of our bounty for more?
Luke 12:15 warns us to ake heed, and beware of covetousness: for a mans life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
How Were Lots Cast In The Bible
The names of the two men were written on stones or small pieces of pottery. These stones were then placed into some type of jar or bowl and shaken until one stone fell out. Whatever name fell out was the one picked. In this situation, it was Matthias stone. The lot fell on Matthias and he was chosen.

It is not uncommon to hear of churches that select their elders and deacons by casting lots. In fact, Ive been a part of two congregations that voted to change their election process to incorporate lots. Usually this involves a double slate being chosen by some combination of the church leaders and a nominating committee and then a final selection by a random draw. In an effort to avoid a popularity contest and the hurt feelings that can result from winners and losers in a double slate, churches are deciding to choose their officers by pulling names out of hat.
Its not hard to find biblical examples of decision-making by lots. The Holy Land was parceled out by sacred lots . Saul was chosen to be king by lot and Jonah went overboard in the same way . Most famously, Matthias was chosen by the casting of lots to replace Judas as the twelfth apostle . So there seems to be good wisdom in choosing our leaders by lots. After all, the lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord .
And yet, I want to answer the question of this post with an emphatic no. Churches should not select their elders by casting lots. Heres why.

After Judas betrayal and death, another disciple needed to be named to keep the number at twelve. In the Acts lesson appointed for today , Peter suggests to the faithful believers assembled after Jesus ascension that they be the ones who choose the twelfth disciple. They cast lots, and the lot fell on Matthias.
We hear this phrase, they cast lots and might thinkare they simply rolling dice, tossing a coin, waiting to see who draws the short straw? Shouldnt they take this more seriously?
But as an ancient and revered tradition, casting lots is the serious way. In Leviticus, the method is used to separate the scapegoat from the goat being sacrificed. In the book of Numbers, its used to divide the Promised Land among the Israelites. Even the sailors on Jonahs boat cast lots to figure out who was responsible for the storm at sea. In I Chronicles, lots were used to determine who was to receive which temple service.
The biblical example with which we are probably most familiar is when the soldiers at the foot of the cross cast lots for Jesus clothing. This is one of many examples though lots were also drawn for musicians, gatekeepers and all sorts of household chores.

The Most Well Known Casting Of The Lots
The most well-known instance of casting lots in the Bible was when the apostles used the procedure to find a replacement for Judas after he hung himself . The Roman soldiers who cast lots for Jesus garments runs a close second in the most famous category . In this instance it appears that casting lots for the garments was nothing more than a game or a form of gambling for the soldiers.
Casting Lots And Decision Making
It is believed by most scholars that when they cast lots in the Bible, some type of dice, sticks , or stones were used as a way to help make decisions. It is most often compared to our modern-day version of flipping a coin, or drawing names from a hat. Casting lots was allowed and even instructed by God as a way to divide land.
Be sure that the land is distributed by lot. What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe.

Gambling In The Bible: What Is Casting Lots
The casting of lots is the closest example of gambling mentioned in the Bible. Many times, we will define the casting of lots as simply drawing straws, alluding to possibility of allowing chance to make the decision.
Casting Lots in the New Testament
Probably the most notable usage of this practice is mentioned in Acts 1:26 when the remaining disciples were to decide upon the replacement of Judas following his rather dramatic departure from the group. The scripture states, nd they gave forth their lots and the lot fell upon Mathias and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
One could reasonably conclude the number of possible candidates was narrowed down based upon qualifications prior to the ultimate decision being made by the casting of lots. Thus, any choice would have been appropriate since each candidate was qualified. There may have been a certain randomness involved in the ultimate choice, but it was not as if some random passerby could have been chosen by the use of the casting of lots.

Was casting lots a form of gambling? Absolutely not. In the Old Testament, when the Jews had to make a decision, they cast lots to decide. This was also practiced by the pagans as we read about in the story of Jonah . When the lot fell to Jonah, they knew it was he who was the cause of the storm. There are at least 88 accounts of casting lots in the Old Testament and seven times in the New Testament and it was something that God did not condemn then but there is no need to do so today. How Biblical Is Casting Lots

Casting lots is very “Biblical”. It is documented in the Bible many times in various ways, from choosing to throw Jonah overboard to choosing a replacement for Judas. But, now we can talk to God directly as long as Jesus is in charge of our life. No longer is it necessary to find a prophet or a priest. We can now each be a member of the holy priesthood. It is very dangerous to use a die or dice or a fleece or short straw or any of the like to make a decision. Personally, I would even go so far as to say that now that God is so readily available–even inside you as the Holy Spirit— that casting lots for decision making is turning your back on God!

Proverbs 16:33
This proverb concerns the decision making process. The lot here refers to a decision-making device. Casting lots in the Old Testament refers to the practice of throwing dice.
The dice would be rolled, and whatever the result was, the person followed it. Often casting lots referred to one type of divination. Divination is seeking to understand what the gods or even the God of Israel wanted you to do.
However, in Israel this practice is rare. The priests relied on the Urim and Thumim in their breastplate to inquire of the Lord. Many of the kings regularly inquired of the Lord whether or not they should go to battle. Got often told them whether they would win the battle or not.
But for the nations around Israel, the most common way to understand what the gods expected of them was through divination. Some of the most common forms of divination were looking at the inner parts of animals and casting lots.
While we consider casting lots or throwing dice in gambling today to be a game, it was used in the Bible as a form of idolatry. That is why this proverb is so interesting. The proverb speaks of decision making, finding out what the Lord once us to do, but saying that if we use dice or lots the Lord will return the result he wants us to do.
In Judaic And Christian Tradition
Casting of lots is mentioned 47 times in the Bible. Some examples in the Hebrew Bible of the casting of lots as a means of determining God‘s will:
- In the Book of Leviticus16:8, God commanded Moses, “And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.”
- According to Numbers26:55, Moses allocated territory to the tribes of Israel according to each tribe’s male population and by lot.
- In Joshua 7:14, a guilty party ” rel=”nofollow”> Achan) is found by lot.
- In the Book of Joshua18:6, Joshua says, “Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.” The Hebrews took this action to know God’s will as to the dividing of the land between the seven tribes of Israel who had not yet “received their inheritance” .
- In the First Book of Samuel14:42, lots are used to determine that it was Jonathan, Saul‘s son, who broke the oath that Saul made, “Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies” .
- In the Book of Jonah1:7, the desperate sailors cast lots to see whose god was responsible for creating the storm: “Then the sailors said to each other, ‘Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.’ They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.”

What Was Casting Lots In The Bible
People today think theyre not superstitious but have you ever tossed a coin to decide what youd do, or whod go first, or whatever? Then youre no different to the people in the Bible because this is pretty much what they did.
Lots: each stone and the position it fell meant something significant
Except that we do it in a more or less light-hearted way whereas the ancients were in deadly earnest.
Someone respected by the community would throw small objects randomly, then tell people what the pattern of the scattered objects meant. This was called casting lots.
Of course it was open to abuse, but most people in ancient times trusted the verdict completely.
Casting lots could be done either in a religious ritual or in ordinary daily life. Proverbs 18:18 says The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between powerful contenders.
Should We Cast Lots To Discern Gods Will Today
No, I do not believe so. The situation in Acts 1 happened before the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. The disciples were acting like Old Testament saints and not as New Testament believers who were indwelled by the Holy Spirit. After the coming of the Holy Spirit, there is no evidence that the leaders in any of the churches cast lots to make decisions. Rather than casting lots, they prayed, and asked for guidance. In each situation, it is usually noted that the Holy Spirit gave direction. In other words, the coming of the Holy Spirit made the practice of casting lots obsolete.
Acts 13 describes how Paul and Barnabas were chosen for their first missionary journey. Notice that it was through prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit, and not by lots that they made their decision.
