The Corner Of Princess And Pitt Streets

At the intersection of Pitt and Princess Streets, a French military chaplain celebrated what is believed to be the first public Mass in Virginia. ZOEY MARAIST | CATHOLIC HERALD

Alexandrias Catholic history began at this intersection, now the site of a residential neighborhood. Celebrating Mass in Virginia was illegal until the Virginia Bill of Rights granted religious freedom in 1786. Before that, private Masses are believed to have been celebrated in Alexandria by priests from Maryland in the 1770s, according to the parish history book, St. Marys: 200 Years for Christ.

At the corner of Princess and Pitt streets, it is believed the first public Mass was celebrated in 1781 in a building owned by the Church of Englands Christ Church. The celebrant was a chaplain serving in Rochambeaus French Army.

Years later in 1788, Col. John Fitzgerald, an aide-de-camp of George Washington during the Revolutionary War, hosted a St. Patricks Day fundraising party for the creation of a Catholic church, to which Washington contributed. Before it was built, Mass and a confirmation were held in Fitzgeralds home at the corner of King and Fairfax streets, now the site of a Burke and Herbert Bank.

What are people saying about churches in Alexandria, VA?

This is a review for churches in Alexandria, VA:

“St. Mary’s Catholic Church is IMMACULATE! The ceiling paintings and stained glass are beautiful and detailed. We attended the 1130am service on a rainy Sunday. Despite the weather, the Church was full of devotees. Given our time of arrival we sat in the middle of the Church and had an excellent view of Pulpit. However, due to the high ceiling and narrowness of the Church, there was a bit of an echo. As a result it was a bit difficult to listen the Gospel. I recommend arriving early to ensure front seating and minimal background noise.”

The First Catholic Church In Virginia

construction of the first Catholic church in Virginia began in 1795, in AlexandriaSource: Wikipedia, The church sign on Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia

The first Christian church in North America was built in 1572 in St. Augustine, Florida. It was a Catholic church, since the Spanish king and his colonists were Catholic. The Jamestown colonists initiated a Protestant alternative in North America over three decades after the Catholics.

Spanish explorers held Catholic services in various places prior to construction of the St. Augustine church. In 1570, Spanish settlers in what is now Virginia built a small chapel near modern-day Yorktown.

The first Catholic chapel in Virginia was a small hut erected by the Jesuit priests led by Father Juan Baptista de Segura. The 11 Jesuits were accompanied by a Native American who had been seized earlier in Virginia. The man known originally as Paquiquineo had been renamed Don Luis de Velasco by the Spanish, and he may have worshiped with the priests before quickly abandoning the colony the Spanish called Ajacan.

The Jesuits built their chapel using lumber and nails which they had brought from Cuba, and had hauled across the Peninsula from where they landed near modern-day Kingsmill. The chapel was located near the Native American town of Kiskiak, on the southern bank of what the English would later call the York River. In 1571, 10 of the 11 Spanish were killed and Catholic services ended when Ajacan was destroyed.1

A Fabulous Old Church In The Heart Of Old Town Alexandria

This beautiful old Church is a perfect setting for a fabulous wedding in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. As you arrive on the cobblestone streets of Old town, the setting brings you back to when the church was conbstructed in teh early 1800’s. The parish was actually established in 1795, and is the oldest Catholic parish in the Commonwealth of Virginia. From their website: “To fund the church, Colonel John Fitzgerald, friend of George Washington and an early mayor of Alexandria, took up a collection. According to local tradition, Washington himself made the first donation. A chapel was built at the south end of the city, on land still used today as St. Marys Cemetery. In 1810, St. Marys moved to its present location in the heart of the city – 310 South Royal Street. Throughout the 1800s, St. Marys played a crucial role in the growth of Catholicism in Virginia. The many mission churches which St. Marys established have gone on to become independent parishes within the Diocese of Arlington. Today St. Marys has more parishioners than Alexandria had residents when the city was founded.” After a mass or service, it’s just a short stroll to the many quaint shops and restaurants of Old Town!
