Blood Protects And Saves The Faithful

Not all RI houses of worship are ready to open. And a legal challenge ...

People who are unfamiliar with the Bible may find the mention and imagery of blood disturbing at first. Yet blood is important in the Bible, and therefore to Christians, because of what it conveys theologically.

Blood protected Gods people during the Passover, saving them from physical death. The Passover foreshadows the ultimate pass over of Christs death as his blood saves people from physical and eternal death.

When Presbyterian churches paint their doors red, it suggests that Gods people worship in that place. Passing through a red door reminds sinful people that God has mercifully provided a way for the condemned to have new life.

The same God that saved the Israelites from the angel of death and who offered His only son to save people from eternal death itself, is the same God who has saved them and who they come to worship at church that day.

A Community Ministry Through Music

Music at the Red Door is a music series that builds bridges between our parish and the community. The name of the series makes reference to our front doors, with their traditional color of welcome and sanctuary. The series has helped to establish St. Johns as a destination for those seeking musical refreshment and excellence, drawing on the existing strengths of our choirs and guest artists, architecture, organ, location, and Anglican heritage.

Music at the Red Door is a unique way to transform lives in the Greater Hartford community:

  • An eclectic mix of events, from classical to jazz, folk, and Gospel, and worship events such as Choral Evensong.
  • Concerts make the music of the organ and choir come alive, with innovative and varying programs, such as organ with sacred dance, silent film with improvised organ accompaniment, and our very popular Pipes Alive! half-hour concerts.
  • The Concert Series invests significantly in our youth, the future of music, making possible a twice-monthly theory class and annual choir camp for our Youth Choir.
  • Concerts are open and accessible to all, with no admission charge.

We hope to see you at the Red Door often! Be sure to check out our events, and click learn how you can help as well.

ASK FAQS

Red symbolizes the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. Red is also a reminder of the Passover and a sign of the Holy Spirit. Church doors began to be painted red as a way of remembering the ultimate sacrifice that others had made for their faith.

The red doors of churches traditionally signaled a place of sanctuary, refuge, and safety. Those in need would not be captured or harmed inside the holy walls of the church, which offered physical and spiritual protection.

Some believe that the doors of the Wittenberg Cathedral, where Martin Luther posted his 95 theses, were red. Red doors on Protestant churches indicate their roots in the Reformation.

Whatever the meaning, many churches today are recognized by their distinctive red doors.
