Church Of God Ministries

What is the Church of God (Anderson IN)?
The Church of God is a worldwide movement of people seeking to fulfill Gods desire for the church. We are committed to studying the Word of God and faithfully living it out. We are committed to being the body of Christ in spirit, word, and deed. We commit ourselves to the mission that Jesus Christ gave every believer: to make disciples of all nations. We seek to love and serve all people, beginning with those within our sphere of activity and influence.

Developments In Holiness Standards

The Church of God continues to see itself as a direct outgrowth of the original teachings of D.S. Warner’s ministry that began the movement in the 1880s. Warner believed that every group of organized churches who had an earthly headquarters and an earthly creed, other than the Bible, was a part of Babylon. He and his later followers taught that God had restored the light of Christian unity in 1880. The Evening Light ministry became known as “come outers” because they traveled from town to town preaching that all of the saved needed to “come out of Babylon” and worship together in one place rather than being separated by creeds, dogmas and doctrines of men. The Reformation Ministry believed that false Christianity was the harlot woman in the book of Revelation. The ministry further believed that the harlot woman was a symbol of Roman Catholicism and that her daughters were a symbol of Protestantism.

Thus, as the movement increasingly de-emphasized the importance of external manifestations of “holy living,” teaching against the following list of practices, while still valued by some, is no longer emphasized by the Church of God:

  • against outward adornment: wedding rings, ear rings, lipstick on women, or following “worldly fashions”
  • women should always refrain from wearing clothing that pertains to men, e.g. pants
  • women should not cut their hair but instead grow it long and men should keep their hair short
  • ministers should not receive a set salary

An Overview Of Worship In The Church Of God

Worship in the Church of God draws on both the holiness and ecumenical traditions. There is a strong emphasis on the altar call for conversion and the use of the public altar during congregational prayer for healing of relationships and emotions. Currently worship is being influenced by both the praise-and-worship movement and liturgical renewal.

The Church of God conceives of itself not as a holiness denomination, but as a movement with a double concern for holiness of life and Christian unity. This dual concern is manifested in a broad spectrum of worship modes that include both the meditative and the overtly expressive, both the use of the hymn book alone and the use of words on a screen alone, both camp-meeting style services with a strong altar call and more polished services typical of mainline Protestantism.

A Singing People. From its beginning in the early 1880s, the people of the Church of God Reformation Movement have been a singing people. The movements founder, Daniel S. Warner, was himself a songwriter and poet.

Faith And Victory Movement

About 1910, some concerned ministers and lay people began to speak up about “worldliness” creeping into the movement. The main issue was over the use of a neck-tie, which was considered as “outward adornment”. However, the concerns were broader than this one point, and included singing “worldly songs”, courtship practices, and using slang. Within a few years a small number of ministers, including C.E. Orr, Willis M. Brown, N.S. Duncan, and W.H. Shoot, began the Herald of Truth paper. Eventually, they would gather into what is now called the , which is characterized by its standards. Some of the dissenters later returned to the main group.

The Financial Wholeness Project

The Lilly Endowment initiated program titled The Theological School Initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Ministers provided an opportunity for all seminaries accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in North America to apply for funding to learn about and develop methods for addressing seminary student debt. The Anderson University School of Theology and Christian Ministry was one of 67 seminaries funded through this grant.

The focus of the Anderson University grant, The Financial Wholeness Project, is to study its structure and relationship within the Church of God , learn about its own students debt, educate students about debt behaviors and implications, and seek to develop funds to support student scholarships. This three-year $248,000 grant will help the School of Theology and Christian Ministry effectively address these areas of focus.

This section features information gleaned from our work on the project. We trust the material here will be useful not only to educators and administrators but also to prospective and current students and alumni as a resource for making appropriate financial decisions and managing educational debt. Our vision is that those called to serve might experience financial wholeness throughout their ministry.
