Historical Names Of The Council

CHRIS’ STORY

The Council’s name was changed several times over its history. In 1968, it adopted its current name, replacing the previous name of Protestant Council of the City of New York.

  • 1895â1901: New York Federation of Churches and Christian Workers
  • 1901â1925: The Federation of Churches and Christian Organizations in New York City
  • 1925â1943: The Greater New York Federation of Churches
  • 1943â1968: The Protestant Council of the City of New York
  • 1968 â Today: The Council of Churches of the City of New York

The Jesus Stuff: The Kingdom

This Sunday, Pastor Jon continued our Fall sermon series, The Jesus Stuff, with a clarifying teaching on the what the Kingdom of God actually is and what it looks like to seek it first in our world today. The Kingdom of God is the reality of God bringing about His will on earth. The gospel of the Kingdom is a threat, and pursing it will bring resistance into our lives, but we cannot do The Jesus Stuff without the Kingdom stuff.

In Person Worship Gathering Health And Safety Measures

We are so excited to welcome you back to the school for our in person worship gatherings in an environment that will allow for personal connections as well as health conscious precautions. Here are a few key details that you need to know:

  • Children’s Service – we will be hosting our regular children’s service in the 5th floor cafeteria. Children can be dropped of at our secure check-in location beginning at 10:45am. All equipment and facilities have been cleaned and sanitized. We will have hand sanitizer in the area as well. When you check your child in, please indicate if you would like for them to wear a mask during the service time and our volunteers will do their best to follow your directions. Our key leaders have been vaccinated and are excited to provide a safe and exciting time for your children. You may also take your child into the main worship gathering if you prefer.

  • Masks – Masks are not required. If you desire, feel free to wear a mask in any part of the building or during the service.

  • Social Distancing – we will have a section of the auditorium designated for social distanced seating. In this area we will ask that you leave 4 seats between groups and to not sit directly behind another group. This area will be located in the upper section of the auditorium and can be accessed through the main entrance on the 3rd floor or through a less congested 4th floor entrance at the rear of the auditorium.

The Family Of Man Medallion

The Family of Man Medallion is awarded to “individuals who exemplify excellence in the use of God-given talents in the service of humankind.” Since 1963 the Council has presented the award to recipients such as the former United States presidents: John F. Kennedy,Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gerald Ford,Richard M. Nixon, and Jimmy Carter. The award was also presented to John D. Rockefeller III. Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat received the award in 1978. In 2005, David Yonggi Cho was the twenty-fifth person and the first Asian man to receive The Family of Man Medallion.

New City Church Is A Place To Connect

Each week we gather as a church family to connect with God and connect with others. These gatherings feature quality, contemporary music, Biblically centered and applicable teachings, and opportunities to connect with our neighbors and other families. You will find a diverse group of people that emphasis unity over uniformity and operate in a more organic than organized environment. The Jesus Stuff: The Secret Place

This Sunday, Pastor Jon continued our Fall sermon series, The Jesus Stuff, by taking a deeper look at the importance of communion with God in the secret place. The source of flourishing in Jesus ministry was His consistent time withdrawing to the secret place to pray and spend time with His Father, and through His death and resurrection we also have access to this source of life.

Jesus went above and beyond in His care for people to the point that He poured out His whole life, and He calls us to do the same.

When we look at the ministry of Jesus, it is clear that He prioritized preaching the Kingdom, healing the sick, and casting out demons, and as His followers, we are called to continue this ministry here on earth through the power of the Holy Spirit.
