Founding And Early Growth

Reaction to Church of the Highlands controversy in Birmingham

Birmingham was founded on June 1, 1871, by the Elyton Land Company whose investors included cotton planters, bankers and railroad entrepreneurs. It sold lots near the planned crossing of the Alabama & Chattanooga and South & North Alabama railroads including land formerly a part of the Benjamin P. Worthington Plantation. The first business at that crossroads was the trading post and country store operated by Marre & Allen. The site of the railroad crossing was notable for the nearby deposits of iron ore, coal, and the three main raw materials used in making steel.

Birmingham is the only place worldwide where significant amounts of all three minerals can be found in close proximity. From the start the new city was planned as a great center of industry. The founders, organized as the Elyton Land Company, borrowed the name of Birmingham, one of England’s main industrial cities, to advertise that point. The growth of the planned city was impeded by an outbreak of and a crash in 1873. However, it began to develop shortly afterward at an explosive rate.

Birmingham was hit by the . A few buildings in the area were slightly damaged. The earthquake was felt as far as Atlanta and neighboring states.

The wartime demand for steel and the post-war building boom gave Birmingham a rapid return to prosperity. Manufacturing diversified beyond the production of raw materials. Major civic institutions such as schools, parks and museums, were able to expand their scope.

Pauls Life For Christ

20 For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.21 For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.22 But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really dont know which is better.23 Im torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.24 But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.

25 Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith.26 And when I come to you again, you will have even more reason to take pride in Christ Jesus because of what he is doing through me.

1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Church of the Highlands is Alabamas largest church with more than 20 campuses throughout the state. The church needed a space large enough to bring together more than 300 staff members. The church relocated its Central Offices to the 4th and 5th floors of an existing corporate office as part of its ongoing expansion to the Grandview Campus in Birmingham. For the first time in Highlands history, the church was able to bring all 13 departments from varying locations together under one roof in the renovated 65,000 SF space.

Highlands leadership took the opportunity to transform what was once a closed-off, dated environment into a space that celebrates Highlands philosophy through 21st century design. The vision was to create a space that was full of light, energetic, youthful, flexible, and collaborative inspiring the next generation of leaders to flourish in a relational environment.

The intent for the new offices is not only to be used locally, but globally, welcoming and training different leaders within the worldwide church community. Following the completion of the Central Offices, construction commenced on the remaining floors to house Highlands College. By 2022, all 12.6 acres of the Grandview campus including the Grandview Church Campus and Student Living will be transformed into a collaborative and relational space.

Church Of The Highlands Associate Pastor Named As Defendant In Workplace Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

A Church of the Highlands associate pastor has been sued as part of a workplace sexual harassment lawsuit filed last week in federal court.

Dino Rizzo, an associate pastor at the Birmingham-based Church of the Highlands, the largest church in Alabama and one of the largest in the nation, is named as a defendant in the lawsuit, which alleges Rizzo did not protect a church intern from sexual harassment by a lead pastor at a Mississippi church where Rizzo is an overseer.

Rizzo referred AL.coms request for comment to the Association of Related Churches , a Birmingham-based evangelical church planting organization Rizzo co-founded and for which he serves as executive director. The lawsuit stems from alleged events that took place at an ARC member church called Vibrant Church, a megachurch in Columbus, Miss.

In the lawsuit, former Vibrant Church member Laura Eagan claims that while she was working as an intern at Vibrant, then-Lead Pastor Jason Delgado sent her unwanted and sexually explicit private messages beginning in early 2021, which escalated into sexual propositions.

Delgado, both of his parents, Vibrant Church and Rizzo are all named as defendants in the federal lawsuit filed in Mississippi on Sept. 30. ARC is not a named defendant.

A representative from Vibrant Church said the church would not comment on the lawsuit efforts to reach Delgado and his parents for comment were unsuccessful prior to publication of this story.

Church of the Highlands controversy: What’s next for the megachurch?

12 And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, Greek brothers. that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News.13 For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, Greek including all the Praetorium. knows that I am in chains because of Christ.14 And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers Greek brothers in the Lord. here have gained confidence and boldly speak Gods message Some manuscripts read speak the message. without fear.

15 Its true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives.16 They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News.17 Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me.18 But that doesnt matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. Birmingham Civil Rights Movement

In the 1950s and 1960s Birmingham received national and international attention as a center of the for African-Americans. Locally the movement’s activists were led by , a fiery preacher who became legendary for his fearlessness in the face of violence, notably a string of racially motivated bombings that earned Birmingham the derisive nickname “Bombingham”.

A watershed in the civil rights movement occurred in 1963 when Shuttlesworth requested that , and the , which Shuttlesworth had co-founded, come to Birmingham, where King had once been a pastor, to help end segregation. Together they launched “Project C” , a massive assault on the . During April and May daily sit-ins and mass marches organized and led by movement leader were met with police repression, tear gas, attack dogs, fire hoses, and arrests. Urban Planning In Birmingham

Before the first structure was built in Birmingham, the plan of the city was laid out over a total of 1,160 acres by the directors of the Elyton Land Co. The streets were numbered from west to east, leaving Twentieth Street to form the central spine of downtown, anchored on the north by Capital Park and stretching into the slopes of Red Mountain to the south. A “railroad reservation” was granted through the center of the city, running east to west and zoned solely for industrial uses. As the city grew, bridges and underpasses separated the streets from the railroad bed, lending this central reservation some of the impact of a river . From the start, Birmingham’s streets and avenues were unusually wide at 80 to 100 feet , purportedly to help evacuate unhealthy smoke.

In the early 20th century professional planners helped lay out many of the new industrial settlements and in the Birmingham District, including Corey which was developed for the . At the same time, a movement to consolidate several neighboring cities gained momentum. Although local referendums indicated mixed feelings about annexation, the Alabama legislature enacted an expansion of Birmingham’s corporate limits that became effective on January 1, 1910.

The Robert Jemison company developed many residential neighborhoods to the south and west of Birmingham which are still renowned for their aesthetic quality.

Church Of The Highlands Birmingham Al

After five years gathering for worship in a local high school and experiencing tremendous growth, Pastor Chris desired a permanent church home that could respond to their rapid growth and accommodate various multi-purpose functions including conferences, events, and community gatherings.

The team turned to Live Design Group for a project that included a masterplan for their 77-acre site with a 2,400-seat sanctuary, administrative office suites, a commons area, a childrens wing with an indoor playground, kids classrooms, and 250-seat auditorium for kids. An additional 1,000-seat theatre was added in Phase Two.

Phase Two continued with another commons area, a separate storefront entrance, and an additional coffee shop and bookstore area that provided a dynamic place for churchgoers to congregate before and after services and events.

Today, Church of the Highlands has over 16 campuses and ministers to thousands of people across the state of Alabama.

We needed both a partner and someone who could work with us to fulfill our visionwe looked and searched for several architectural firms and it became very clear very quickly that LIVE Design was the firm for us.

Church Of The Highlands Pastor Issues Apology Amid Social Media Controversy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – We’re hearing from a former Church of the Highlands member after Instagram posts show its pastor liking some controversial posts.

Jeffrey Wright and his wife first joined Church of the Highlands in 2008 with Pastor Chris Hodges as lead pastor. The church is one of the largest in Alabama.

Wright says they loved the church so much they even encouraged their friends to join. But shortly after Donald Trump ran for President, Wright saw church leadership showing support for a candidate who Wright believed didnt show support for the black members of the church. So he left the church in 2017.

And this past week, some screen grabs came out showing Pastor Hodges following and liking Charlie Kirks Instagram account. Kirk founded Turning Point USA – a conservative and controversial student organization.

One post even showed Kirk liking a post which says Charlie Kirk flawlessly debunks white privilege.

This past weekend, Pastor Hodges responded to the images.

Some saw something on social media that questioned my character. And Ill own it by the way. But that is not what I believe, and it is not what we teach. And I understand how this has made you feel, and I apologize, said Pastor Hodges.

We get caught up on a lot of things and we want to draw people into boxes, and we want to judge people. And the sad part is, the majority of the Bible is about love and tolerance. I dont feel that, said Wright.

Church Of The Highlands Opens Woodlawn Branch Campus

The Church of the Highlands has completed construction on its latest branch campus on Messer-Airport Highway, and will have the first services there on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022.

The Church of the Highlands, Alabamas largest church with more than 20 branch campuses throughout the state, will open its newest campus in Woodlawn on Sunday, founding Pastor Chris Hodges announced this week.

Next Sunday, Sept. 11, after 10 years of being portable, at Woodlawn High School and the BJCC, our Woodlawn and Uptown family finally have a home, Hodges said in a message recorded in the new Woodlawn worship auditorium. Its here at the site of the former Gibson Elementary School.

The church bought the former elementary school campus, abandoned in 2008, for $637,500 from the Birmingham Board of Education in 2020 three months after the school board terminated leases allowing Highlands to hold services at Woodlawn High School and Parker High School. The church demolished the dilapidated school but used the bricks in the new construction.

To preserve a part of the history of the school, and to honor this great community, our team used the bricks from Gibson Elementary to frame the entrance of our new building, Hodges said. Sunday services at the Woodlawn campus, 4930 Messer-Airport Highway, will be at 9:45 and 11:30 a.m.

As with its other campuses, it was built debt-free, Hodges said.
