A Church Of Extravagant Welcome

Today, we continue to change lives throughout the world. We work alongside more than 200 mission partners. We labor ceaselessly to fight injustice, in the United States and abroad. We instill our vision into our youth and young adults, forging leaders who will imagine new dreams. And we sustain and develop church leaders, pastors, and our local churches to live their faith in exciting new ways. We believe in a God that is still speaking, a God that is all-loving and inclusive. We are a church that welcomes and accepts everyone as they are, where your mind is nourished as much as your soul.

We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world. Our Faith is 2,000 Years Old. Our Thinking is Not.

Living Out The Covenant

Congratulations on becoming an Economic Justice Church!

Your congregation has been on a journey of discernment. You have engaged with our faith, the Holy Spirit, and with the community both within and outside your walls, and you have learned about issues of economic justice. You have covenanted with God and with each other to be a congregation working for economic justice. And you have given some thought to what this will mean for the life of the congregation going forward. You are now ready to live out that faith-based commitment to being a congregation that seeks economic justice.

We hope the covenant you adopted will be posted in a prominent and highly visible location. Please consider adding the designation An Economic Justice Church to signage, church letterhead, the Sunday bulletin, and other places both as a witness to the world and to remind the congregation of the commitment it has made.

We hope, as you may also, that the covenant will become part of the ongoing life of the church. Making the commitment to be an Economic Justice Church means the congregations witness and work in the world will be different, going forward. To ensure that, there are some steps you can take.

Implementing the Covenant

To implement the goals that are outlined in your congregations covenant, consider creating an economic justice committee or task force. This could be a totally new body within the church or it could be an existing body that takes on this new ministry.

How To Renew Your Ona Covenant

Covenant United Church Of Christ

Your Open and Affirming covenant is the beginning, not the end, of your mission as an ONA congregation. Vital ONA churches renew their covenant once a yeareither on the anniversary the covenant was affirmed by the congregation, or on the Sunday before the Pride event in their community. Many congregations call this Open and Affirming Covenant Sunday. The annual renewal is an opportunity for a program of study in ways the congregations ONA commitment can be deepened and expanded. Some ONA churches, for example, will begin a study of the transgender experience several months before ONA Covenant Sunday and then celebrate an amended covenant that includes an explicit welcome to transgender seekers. Other churches will organize educational experiences leading up to ONA Covenant Sunday on issues like marriage equality and basic civil rights, bullying and suicide, care for LGBT seniors, and evangelism. Contact the Coalition at for music and worship resources to help you celebrate your ONA Covenant Renewal.

Working Toward A Just World For All

A just world begins with justice we commit to supporting and living practices that are grounded in justice within our congregations, communities, governing bodies, networked partnerships, relationships and beyond. When love becomes the lens through which we see the world, justice is possible.

Levels Of Reinforcement Make Health Ministries Stronger

What is the Church of Christ?

In the world of public health, researchers have learned that repeated reminders and layers of encouragement are most beneficial to have lasting impact on peoples behavior. Its important that people see incentives not just at the gym, but at home, at work, at school, in worship, in restaurants, and in several other venues in order to continually encourage decisions that favor good health. Covenant United Church of Christ in South Holland has experienced the same effect on their church-wide efforts reminders from all dimensions.

Covenant United Church of Christ had been health conscious for several years. The Senior Pastor, Reverend Ozzie Smith, was an early devotee to good health. His motivation was from early family experience. I watched my mother my mother, who was intentional about eating healthy her whole life, and yet she still came down with type II diabetes which eventually took her life. The congregation has always known that I work out 5 days a week and I try to eat healthy.

A health and wellness committee began to form under the guidance of Maude Baker, a nurse, who passed away about 5 years ago. The committee began to get legs under her, says Smith. She promoted blood pressure screening and diabetes screening. The church thought one of the best places to the screenings was during the annual Covenant UCC summer picnic.

What We Believe

  • That we may be one – reflects the spirit of unity on which the church is based.
  • In essentials unity, in non-essentials diversity, in all things charity – the unity of the church is not of its own making. It is a gift of God. But expressions of that unity are as diverse as there are individuals. The common thread that runs through all is love
  • Testimonies of faith rather that tests of faith – Because faith can be expressed in many different ways, the UCC has no formula that is a test of faith.
  • There is yet more light and truth to break forth from God’s Holy Word – recognizes that the Bible, though written in specific historical times and places, still speaks to us in our present condition because God is a still speaking God. It declares that the study of Scripture is not limited by past interpretations but is to be pursued with expectancy for new insights and help for living today.
  • The priesthood of all believers – All members of the UCC are called to minister to others and to participate as equals in the common worship of God, each with direct access to the mercies of God through personal prayer and devotion. Recognition is given to those among us who have received special training in pastoral, priestly, educational, and administrative functions, but these persons are regarded as leaders – ministers and servants – rather than as persons with absolute authority.
