Things To Remember About Doubts

DO NOT DOUBT | Daily verse in English | Today’s God’s word | 12 July 21

One of the hardest things about doubt is admitting its there. Our beliefs feel like dominos. If one wobbles, wont the whole lot come crashing down?

Doubts often start small. Is there any point in praying? Yet one question quickly leads to another. Does God hear? Does God care? And finally, Is God even there?

When such doubts begin to nag, we can envy even our atheist friends. They let their unbelief hang out while we must keep ours hidden. How can you admit to doubt if youre a Sunday school teacher, a home-group leader, or employed by a Christian organization? How can you speak of unbelief when youre part of a family of believers?

But such doubts are there. And like weeds, they grow when unattended. If we dont confront them, theyll soon confront us. So how should we respond? Here are five things to remember.

What God Says About Doubting Yourself

God has much to say about self-doubt. Over and over through scripture He affirms your value and His protection and authority over your life. When you start to doubt yourself or question yourself, remember that you have the God of the universe fully pledged and committed to you.

Through this one Psalm, Hes repeated himself intentionally knowing that we would doubt ourselves, and question Him. Its as if hes pleading for us to hear Him.

These bible verses about doubting yourself should be an anchor to Him. When your head drops in doubt, lift it up with truth! God never doubts, wavers, or questions anything. He desires for your complete reliance to be upon Him, not yourself.

Its so important to know your true identity in Christ and what that means for you.

We All Struggle With The Problem Of Doubt

A. Doubt is a problem, even for the righteous.

Zacharias was righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord . Being righteous in the sight of the Lord means that his godliness was not an outward show, like the righteousness of the Pharisees, but a matter of the heart. The man walked with God and he had done so for many years. The fact that such a godly man doubted shows us that none are exempt from the problem.

Other great men and women of faith in the Bible also had their moments of doubt. Sarah stumbled over a similar situation. When the Lord announced to Abraham that his wife would give birth to a son, Sarah, listening on the other side of the tent wall, laughed in doubt .

So doubt is a problem, even for those who are righteous in Gods sight. If godly men like Zacharias and John fell into doubt, we should be on guard, so that we do not fall. Since even the godly have fallen, we may wonder, What is the source of doubt?

B. Doubt does not stem from a lack of evidence, but from our sinful hearts.

So even if weve walked with God for years, when we are faced with a seemingly impossible situation, we need to look to our hearts, which are prone to limit the Almighty by human possibilities. God has given us abundant evidence in Scripture that He is the God of the impossible. Nothing is too difficult for Him. The source of our doubts is not a lack of evidence. It is rather our, sinful hearts.

Bible Verses About Doubt

For My people have committed two evils:They have forsaken Me,The fountain of living waters,To hew for themselves cisterns,Broken cisterns

Look, they keep saying to me,Where is the word of the Lord?Let it come now!

Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.

I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer me I stand up, and You turn Your attention against me.

Unless I See The Nail Marks In His Hands

Now Thomas , one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

It always seemed a little unfair that Thomas is forever saddled with the title “Doubting Thomas.” There was a time when the disciples were trying to talk Jesus out of going back to Judea to see Lazarus because the authorities wanted Him dead. It was Thomas who said, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him” . But that’s not what we remember about Thomas.

After Jesus is raised from the dead, He appears to the disciples. But John says “Thomas wasn’t with them” . They believed because they were there and saw the Lord. Earlier, when Mary tried to tell them that she had seen the Lord, they didn’t believe her either .

Mercy To Those Who Doubt

Be merciful to those who doubt.

Faith isn’t static. We could have strong faith today and tomorrow go through something that makes us question everything. It’s incredibly important that we treat one another with tenderness and care because that’s how we protect doubt from becoming disbelief.

When Thomas said that he wouldn’t believe unless he felt the Lord’s wounds, he didn’t want faith he wanted certainty. He was saying, “I will believe it when you prove it to me.” But faith isn’t certainty. It is belief in the face of questions and misgivings. It is trust despite doubt.

For people to grow in faith, they need the freedom to take tentative steps. They need to trust that their questions will be met with gentleness. It’s when doubt is met with mercy that faith expands.

Lesson : The Problem Of Doubt

Every thinking person has struggled with the problem of doubt. C. S. Lewis, who was an atheist before he was converted to Christianity, acknowledged that just as the Christian has his moments of doubt, so does the atheist. He wrote, Believe in God, and you will have to face hours when it seems obvious that this material world is the only reality disbelieve in Him, and you must face hours when this material world seems to shout at you that it is not all. No conviction religious or irreligious will, of itself, end once and for all this fifth-columnist in the soul. Only the practice of faith resulting in the habit of faith will gradually do that.

Doubt comes in varying degrees. There is the doubt of the proud skeptic, who delights in his own intellect. He pits himself against God as if he is a match for the Almighty. He delights in upsetting the faith of weak believers. He sets forth his arguments against Gods existence or the Christian faith as if he is the first brilliant thinker in history to come up with such insights. Such doubters often find jobs teaching at American universities! The Bible dismisses such scoffers with the word, The fool has said in his heart, There is no God .

What can Zacharias teach us about the problem of doubt?

Help Me Overcome My Unbelief

Never Doubt What One Prayer Can Do

Jesus asked the boys father, “How long has he been like this?””From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.””If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”Immediately the boys father exclaimed, “I do believe help me overcome my unbelief!”

This father’s expression of faith is one of the most honest and meaningful statements about doubt in the entire New Testament. Faith and doubt aren’t opposing positions on the same light switch. They’re often conditions that exist side by side.

This man asks Jesus to intervene because he does believe. He believes enough to bother asking, but he could believe more. We could always believe more. And nothing seems more meaningful than using your existing faith to ask for more faith.

You Cant Have Faith Without Questions

This is true for the simple reason that God has chosen to keep many secrets. The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children . There are certain things God has revealed: Thats what makes faith possible. There are certain things God has kept secret: Thats what makes faith necessary.

Paul says, Now I know in part . We know in part, and that is why we walk by faith and not by sight. Faith lives with unanswered questions. You cannot live in this world without asking, Why? We live with the mysteries of evil and suffering.

Just as its part of Christian faith to say we know what God has revealed, it is part of Christian humility to say we do not know what God has kept secret.

When massive suffering comes close to home as it did on September 11, 2001, the world will say to us, How do you explain this? as if faith depended on having all the answers. But if you had all the answers, then you would have no need of faith.

The day will come when we will know fully, even as we are fully known. But on that day faith will no longer be necessary. Faith will be turned to sight, and we will behold him! Until then, we will have faith with questions, and that will be a normal experience of the Christian life.

Using Bible Verses About Doubting Yourself

This Psalm and bible verses about doubting yourself opens with the declaration that God is good and ends with saying He is your God.

It immediately follows with three times repeating, His faithful love endures forever. Repeat this for yourself over and over. Allow the Holy Spirit to penetrate your heart with these 13 simple truths when you start to doubt yourself.

With this is mind, take note of the other promises that are repeated throughout this Psalm. These powerful truths are repeated for a purpose and to point out the weight of these promises.

Know that God is for us and He is our refuge. Three times we are reminded that the authority of the Lord is in us. The Lord gives victory and He does glorious things.

God wants us to know and believe these words.

Likewise, repeat these truths to yourself over and over until they take root in your heart.

Notice the bookends of this Psalm: God is good and He is your God.

Take these to heart and be encouraged! The next time you start to doubt yourself, let these truths remind you of who God is and what He does for you!

If You Have Faith And Do Not Doubt

Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.

When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.

Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

The story about the fig tree is a curious one. Why did Jesus have to pick on a fig tree? What message was He trying to send?

When the disciples ask Him about this event, He doesn’t give them the “why.” Instead, He focuses on teaching them a lesson on faith. Sometimes the way we interpret His lesson can make faith more of a struggle. If the key to getting things done is to never doubt, then we’re all in trouble.

Like most Near Eastern teachers of His time, Jesus used exaggeration and hyperbole to make His points. When He wanted His followers to understand just how important something was, He would overstate it.
