Since 2018, the people of Emmanuel had been working toward becoming a Reconciling in Christ church. We held regular faith formation forums to discuss what it means to be inclusive and celebrate all people, specifically the LGBTQIA+ community as well as debunking common myths and bible passages used to exclude and harm this community.
In June of 2020, the congregation overwhelmingly voted in favor to publically welcome, include, and celebrate LGBTQIA+ individuals and families to Emmanuel.

Other Christian Denominations That Allow Gay Marriage
On Tuesday the Presbyterian Church voted to redefine marriage as a commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman,formally allowing same-sex marriages within the church. The vote to modify the church constitution follows last years recommendation from the churchs General Assembly.
Heres are other major churches in the U.S. that allow same-sex marriage:
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America allows same-sex couples to get married, but leaves it up to individual ministers of congregations to decide, according to a 2009 resolution. There is nothing that prescribes who a congregation pastor can marry or not marry, so long as it is consistent with state law, ELCA Secretary David Swartling said in 2012.
The Episcopal Church established a rite of blessing for same-sex couples in 2012 and prohibited discrimination against transgender people. It has welcomed gay people since 1976, when its General Convention decided that homosexual persons are children of God who have a full and equal claim with all other persons upon the love, acceptance, and pastoral concern and care of the Church. Technically it has no official policy sanctioning same-sex marriage, but it will take up the issue in June.

Pope Francis and the Catholic Church have been in the spotlight once more after newspapers all over Europe reported about the popes statement on LGBTQ+ couples in October 2020. The pope had stated that homosexual people have the right to be in a family. Though this statement initially seemed to reflect a willingness to change the Catholic Churchs view on the LGBTQ+ community, the Vatican ultimately responded that this was not the case. This incident sparks a larger question: how do other denominations of the Christian Church behave towards the LGBTQ+ minority? In this article, evangelical churches across Europe will be discussed.
Gay marriage is a sinSeveral European evangelical churches could be considered conservative in their stance towards the LGBTQ+ community. For example, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Estonia does not tolerate gay marriage. The EELK is open to laws recognising same-sex partnerships, as long as marriage is officially recognised as the bond between one man and one woman. Furthermore, members of the LGBTQ+ community are not allowed to become a priest within the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Why do people support LGBTQ+?
Is it wrong to NOT support the LGBTQ+ community?
People support the LGBTQ+ community for a variety of reasons. Many people support the community because they personally know someone in that community. Others offer support for ideological reasons. For example, libertarians would say that you should allow people to make their own choices and not meddle in the individual freedoms of others. Still others choose to support these communities for moral reasons. They think that the Christian perspective is cruel and wicked.
But I think there is a reason that people often dont recognize: God designed us to support one another. He made us for community. The Biblical letter to the Thessalonians gives believers this challenge:
So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.1 Thessalonians 5:11
The Biblical book of James talks about our responsibility to the disenfranchised, saying:
Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.James 1:27
God has called believers to himself in order to minister to the needs of others, both inside and outside the church. Jesus calls greatness in the kingdom of God, being a servant. In other words, God put support in His peoples bones. Supporting others is something God has called us to do.

Transgender & Gender Non
TRANSGENDER is an identity many people use whose self-experienced gender does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. For example, a transgender person might be someone who identifies and lives as a woman but whose birth-assigned sex was male. Other transgender people identify as somewhere in between the societally recognized genders of man and woman, as neither, or as one gender at some times and another gender at other times.
TRANS can be an umbrella term used to refer to transgender, genderqueer, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people. The colors of the transgender flag are incorporated in this graphic.
GENDER NON-CONFORMING people who hold gender identities that are the same as their birth-assigned sex, but do not express their gender identity in ways that conform to societal and/or cultural expectations.
GENDERQUEER can describe a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders.
CISGENDER describes a person whose birth-assigned sex and gender identity are the same. For example, a person whose assigned sex is female and who identifies as a woman is cisgender.

Do People Choose To Be Homosexual
When we think of ourselves as Gods created beings, we remember that God created us to share life. Included in our shared life is the desire for an intimate sharing with another person.
For most people this is a desire for intimacy with a person of the opposite sex. For a minority it is a desire for intimacy with a person of the same sex.
A homosexual preference can be strongly internalised, and there has been a long debate as to whether it is innate or learned unconsciously early in life. People do not generally choose to be homosexual. Others choose to experiment in their sexual life, and we may feel that current social standards encourage this.

Why Be A Reconciling In Christ Congregation
Sadly, LGBT people continue to experience exclusion and harm from people who supposedly are acting in the name of Christianity. Even though some congregations say, All are Welcome they also believe that LGBT people need to stop being themselves in order to be truly welcome in their congregation. Reconciling in Christ proclaims love for all of Gods creation, especially those who have suffered discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Based on these positions about homosexual practice and marriage, the Church has also maintained restrictions regarding clergy. Pastors may not be self-avowed, practicing homosexuals and may not conduct ceremonies that celebrate same-sex weddings or unions. Such ceremonies also may not be held on church property.
Some members feel strongly that the church should uphold its current stances regarding gay clergy and marriage. Others strongly advocate for inclusion of LGBTQ Christians in all aspects of life in the church.
While the church has official statements regarding homosexuality, all members can disagree with the churchs positions and can advocate for change in policy. That process happens through General Conference, the only body that speaks officially for the church. At every General Conference since 1972, global delegates have grappled with differing views as they made decisions about whether or how to include LGBTQ people in the church.

Sample Questions And Answers On Same Sex Marriage
This is a question that your pastor and leadership should sit down and carefully discuss with your congregation/parish/ministry to formulate a policy everyone can accept. Most congregations already have written or unwritten policies and practices for the use of church facilities and this may be a good time to review them and ask how these are meeting the needs of the congregations mission in the gospel.
The LCA doesnt normally legislate on this kind of matter but it will produce a set of guidelines if the need is demonstrated. Generally Lutheran congregations are rarely asked for the use of their sanctuary for a civil marriage. Sometimes we are asked for hall hire if we have a good facility in a sought after location. It could well happen that congregational members ask for an SSM wedding reception for themselves or their son or daughter. This is why your congregation should develop a policy ahead of time, and do so mindful of the congregations mission in the name of Christ. The law does permit religious bodies to refuse the use of facilities if the refusal: conforms to the doctrines, tenets or beliefs of the religion of the body or is necessary to avoid injury to the religious susceptibilities of adherents of that religion.
Us Lutheran Branch Loosens Gay Clergy Policy

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America also encouraged its congregations to find ways to support or recognize members in accountable lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships.
But it did not give official sanction to gay marriage or approve any rites for such ceremonies.
Still, the stance taken by the 4.6-million-member church is one of the most liberal by any U.S. denomination on matters of sexual orientation, which are among the most divisive political and religious issues in America today.
The church adopted the resolution at its biennial meeting in Minneapolis.
It is about people in committed, same-gender relationships, said John Brooks, the director of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Americas news service and a spokesman for the church.
The resolution, approved by a vote of 559 to 441, said the church was committed to finding ways to allow people in accountable, lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships to serve as rostered leaders of this church.
The measure applies to clergy as well as professional lay leaders.
The assembly still has to approve procedural changes to allow the resolution to go forward. Brooks said he expected the new policy to be in place by 2010.
