Examples Of Meekness In The Bible

Meaning Of Blessed Are The Meek

Meekness – What the Bible really teaches and why every Christian must be Meek

Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” . The word meek from the original language was used to describe reining in a stallion. It is the idea of a horse being controlled by a bit and bridle. The horse is choosing to submit to authority. That is meekness. It is power under constraint.

Meekness is not weakness it is power under control. As the writer of Proverbs says, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city” . In contrast, the individual who is not gentle is likened to “a city that is broken into and without walls” . Gentleness always uses its resources appropriately, unlike the out-of-control emotions that so often are destructive and have no place in your life as a believer.

Jesus is clear that I will be more than happy if I am meek and gentle. I will in fact inherit the earth according to the Jesus Manifesto.

According to our dictionary, to be meek means you are showing patience and humility, gentleness easily imposed upon, submissive. The meek one doesnt throw fits or fly off the handle under pressure. A good synonym is gentle. A meek person is under control.

Jesus challenges me to learn from Him. Jesus is gentle. Jesus is humble. Jesus shows me how to have compassion and love.

Matthew 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Jesus Is Not Mr Rogers With A Beard

Paul encourages me to learn from the example of Jesus. I must spend as much time as I can reading what Jesus says, thinking about it, listening to Jesus. Jesus is my example of meekness and gentleness.

2 Corinthians 10:1 1 Now I, Paul, myself urge youI who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent!

Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed King. Jesus could have entered Jerusalem on a stallion with legions of angels to establish His Kingdom. That was not what God had in mind. Jesus enters on a donkey. The prophet Zechariah wrote: Behold, your king comes to you, triumphant and victorious. He is humble and riding on an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass.

Jesus purpose in riding into Jerusalem was to make public His claim to be their Messiah and King of Israel in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Jesus rides into His capital city as a conquering King and is hailed by the people as such, in the manner of the day. The streets of Jerusalem, the royal city, are open to Him, and like a king He ascends to His palace, not a temporal palace but the spiritual palace that is the temple, because His is a spiritual kingdom. He receives the worship and praise of the people because only He deserves it. He does it on a donkey, not a stallion!

Matthew 21:5 Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.

Moderate Your Expectations Of Others

God knows our frame he remembers that we are dust.

If God remembers the frailty that is mine, I should also remember the frailty of others.

God remembers that we are dust. You should remember that too. It will help you to grow in meekness. It is easy, especially for pastors and leaders to forget this, and assume that all Christians will be deeply committed, ready for sacrifice, engaged with the mission of the church, walking by faith, and living in full obedience to Christ.

When we find that this is not the case, and that there is a great deal of self-interest among many Christians, its easy to become disappointed or frustrated. I think every leader experiences this in some way.

I need to remember that every Christian is a sinner in the process of redemption and recovery. If I apply the doctrine of sin correctly, I will moderate my expectations of others, and I will grow in meekness.

A Citizens’ Submission To Civil Rulers

General conference quotes, Book of james, Relief society lessons

Titus 3:1,2 – In the same context where we are told to be meek and humble toward all men , we are also told to be subject and obedient toward rulers and authorities.

1 Peter 2:13-15 – Be submissive to ordinances of man, whether king or governors, or to proper representatives of these rulers. Why should we submit? Because it is God’s will. Meek submission to God’s law will lead us to meekly submit to rulers.

Why is it that people refuse to submit to laws? Why cheat on taxes? Why disobey speed laws, etc.? Because we don’t want to do what the law says, we want to do what we want. We are self-willed, unwilling to deny self. What qualities do we need so we can avoid these attitudes? We need meekness and humility – willingness to set aside our will and submit to the will of the rulers.

Questions For Discussion And Application:

  • What do you find confusing about the virtues of meekness and humility?
  • How does the visual of clothing yourself or putting on meekness and humility help you understand building character? Give examples of how you can do this.
  • How specifically do you struggle with being meek or humble in your life? Give examples.
  • Application Of Meekness And Humility To Our Lives

How do we come before God in a posture of humility, then, and of meekness?

First, we have to recognize God for who he is. He is God on high. Christ is seated at the right hand of God, he is exalted and worthy of praise. And he is also humble and meek. He took on humanity to save us: you and me. Its not just an abstract concept but a real event that took place 2,000 years ago. Christ became man, he suffered death, and he was obedient to the cross. He died so that we could have life and so that we could follow him and know how to follow him. Having life doesnt just mean going to heaven and being saved. He came so that we could truly LIVE, right now, in the joy of following God.

Second, we have to look to Jesus for the power to be meek and humble. In Matthew 11:29, Jesus says to take my yoke upon you and learn from me , for I am gentle and humble in heart , and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 meaning is that we find rest by trusting all the details of our lives to Jesus.

Examples of humility in everyday life, and examples of meekness, is trusting Jesus to guide us through trouble at work, or difficulty in our marriage, or trouble relating to a friend. We have to trust that he is sufficient enough to care for all our troubles. His meekness and humility are why we take his yoke . We take Jesus yoke. Because otherwise, were just bound to the world. And the world is a much tougher way to go. It may seem easier, but its not. Jesus says my burden is light.

Don’t Miss: I Will Give You Rest Bible Verse

He Has Shown You O Man What Is Good And What Does The Lord Require Of You But To Do Justly To Love Mercy And To Walk Humbly With Your God

Being obedient is not an easy objective, but when God calls us to obey, He usually calls us to be Just, doing things in the right way according to His precepts, He calls us to love mercy, which can include forgiveness for others that we find so hard to forgive and by doing these things, we humble ourselves because we are declaring: not my will but Yours be done, God

So choose this path and walk with Him.

Ask God To Give You Meekness

    What is Meekness?

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Then James describes the wisdom God gives: The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits .

Lord, you said that a gentle and quiet spirit is of great worth in your sight. Please give me that spirit. Help me to curb this harsh tongue. Keep me from rash judgments, and help me to think the best of others.

Help me to discern your hand working for my good, even when I face great difficulties, opposition and sometimes wounds. Help me to find pleasure in the joy of others. Help me to walk with Jesus Christ, so that a reflection of your meek Son, Jesus Christ, may be formed in me today.

What Does It Mean To Be Meek Matthew : 5

Nine times in the Beatitudes Jesus pronounces a blessing that comes with the Kingdom. His Kingdom is not of this world, and in fact is counterintuitive to this world. Jesus teaches that being poor in spirit, mournful, meek, etc., are the ways to inherit His blessing. We live on earth, but we live for Heaven. Matthew 5:5 says, Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Lets breakdown the word:

    M- Meaning

We live in a world that thinks meekness is weakness and humility is timidity. Nothing could be further from the truth! Meekness is power under control. The Greek word was used to describe medicine. The proper dose heals, but an overdoes kills. It was also used to describe wind. A gentle breeze refreshes, but a hurricane or tornado destroys. It is also the picture of breaking a horse. The idea is not to break the horse of its strength or speed but rather the goal is to break the horse of its stubbornness and self-will. Anyone who continues to live independently and wildly will never experience the blessed life.

A Note The Examples Of Moses And Jesus

    Example of Moses:

Numbers 11:10-15 – Moses had problems most of us would never submit to. People constantly complained about his leadership, even though he was just doing what God said. How many of us would have stood for it? No wonder he was called the meekest man on earth! In fact, it was a complaint against him that occasioned the statement that he was so meek .

    Example of Jesus:

Acts 8:32,33 – He was led as a sheep to the slaughter .

Matthew 26:39 – Was it hard for Jesus to go to the “slaughter”? Did this take meekness? He said, “Not my will but thine be done.”

Philippians 2:8 – Jesus left the glory of heaven, humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of the death on the cross. Consider how much humility and meekness would be required for one to willingly leave the glory of heaven to come to earth to live as a man and die as a criminal to save others.

By Humility And The Fear Of The Lord Are Riches And Honour And Life

Meekness: the meek shall inherit the earth.

Jesus stresses the importance of humility in the Beatitudes, telling us that “humility is the fear of the LORD.” Proverbs 22:4 says that “humility is the fear of the LORD.” He says the poor in spirit will inherit the kingdom of heaven.

One who is poor in spirit is one who admits that they are spiritually empty and incapable of pleasing God apart from Christ’s sacrifice. A person who humbles themselves and trusts in God will inherit eternal life.

Humble Yourselves In The Sight Of The Lord And He Will Lift You Up

It is wise to humble yourself in the sight of the Lord because He is the one who ordains all things. When you see a kingdom prosper, God is the one who allows it, when you see a kingdom fall, God allows.

In the end, those who humble themselves will be lifted up, because they are the ones who think less of themselves, they are the ones who do God’s will no matter the earthly cost.

Our God looks at the heart, he does not look at the outward appearance of any man. The richest kind are those who value God above everything else.

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. – Proverbs 22:4

The Meek Have The Spirit With Them

Meekness is a fruit, or result, of having the Spirit . At the same time, meekness also brings the Spirit into our lives . We should strive to have the Spirit with us in all we do. Submitting ourselves to being guided and directed by the Spirit shows our willingness to follow the Savior throughout our lives. This quality is at the heart of meeknessâand brings us great strength.

Ii We Must Honor Others Rather Than Exalting Ourselves

One who is truly meek and humble does not belittle or neglect the good qualities of others in order to obtain glory and honor and recognition for himself.

Romans 12:3 – Don’t think more highly of self than you ought to think, but think soberly.

“Think so as to have sound judgment” . Be honest and realistic in evaluating yourself compared to others. It is easy to think we more capable than others, have better ideas than others, deserve greater honor than others, when this may not be the case. Specifically:

Admit your weaknesses and especially your sins.

Most people tend to overlook their own sins or downplay the seriousness of them. When I do something, it’s a weakness or personality deficiency when you do the same thing, it’s a sin. We already showed we are all sinners. None of us deserve the honor of eternal life any more than anyone else.

Appreciate the good qualities of others.

Other people do have good points, and often they are better than we are in some areas. We tend to exaggerate our own good points, and exaggerate other people’s bad points. The fact we have different abilities from someone else does not mean we are more important than they or more worthy of honor than they .

Give God credit for what good points you do have.

Romans 12:16 – Do not set your mind on high things … Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Romans 12:15 – Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

Be Of The Same Mind Toward One Another Do Not Set Your Mind On High Things But Associate With The Humble Do Not Be Wise In Your Own Opinion

    Meekness | 2 Corinthians – Lesson 24

Being obedient is also being wise according to Gods standards and this can sometimes mean that you need to submit your own opinion and just listen.

Associating yourself with those who are full of pride and vanity can become so addicting to our flesh because we benefit negatively from that, most people in their arrogance along with their attitude of just loving themselves and forgetting to love others have come to know what it is like to live a wealthy life.

They usually attract people around them who are just there to benefit from their riches, they attract vain people who also just care for their well-being.

So rather associate yourself with the humble, the low in spirit, the meek because although they do not look rich in a material aspect, they are the richest of all, because they will inherit the Kingdom of God.

True riches are only found in Jesus, so be obedient and humble yourself no matter how hard it can be.

I We Must Submit To Human Authority Ordained By God

We do not say that men have the right to make laws in religion that fall outside the realm of what God’s word authorizes. But God’s word says that we must also be subject to various forms of human authority. Note some instances where meekness and humility are expressly mentioned regarding our submission to these authorities:

A Teach With Compassion And Self

Galatians 6:1 – One overtaken in trespass should be restored in a spirit of meekness.

This shows the proper purpose of teaching: to restore the person.

You seek to help bear his burden . You are trying to be helpful. You’re not there to gloat because he fell, nor to remind him you were right . You’re not there to hurt his feelings . You are not there to add to his problems, but to help solve them.

Every act should be done with this end in view. In harmony with Scripture and in accord with wisdom, act only in ways that will help contribute to his return to God.

Specifically, strive to let the person know that this is your purpose.

Be compassionate and sympathetic. Let him know the reason you are talking to him is that you care about him.

A man evaluating two preachers once said: The first man told me I was lost and made me feel like he was glad for it. The second man told me I was lost, but made me feel like he was really sorry and wanted me to be saved.

Our manner will never satisfy all the sinners. Some people will become angry no matter how you approach them. Moses and Jesus were examples of meekness, but people complained regularly about Moses and killed Jesus! Whether or not people are pleased, examine yourself to be sure your teaching is not egotistic self-righteousness nor an intellectual exercise by which you seek to win an argument just to prove your opponent wrong.
