Test Your Security Improvements
The final step in your initial security improvement cycle is testing and exercising what you have put in place. This could include some or all of the areas which you have improved or implemented new policies, physical barriers, or planning efforts which are designed to make your facility more secure and safe. Initiative Reflects a Change in Foundation Policy and Practice
In March, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving announced a new grant opportunity to support faith organizations assisting residents disproportionately affected by COVID-19, addressing needs of congregants and the broader community impacted by racial/ethnic, geographic, economic disparities, or advancing community engagement focused on social and racial justice. After receiving nearly 40 applications from organizations representing a broad range of faiths from throughout the region, the Foundations Faith Community Grant program has awarded 33 grants totaling $300,000.
In 2020, the Hartford Foundation convened Greater Hartford faith leaders representing various religious organizations and traditions to learn about pressing needs they see, the ways they address them, and what they need to enhance their efforts. These faith leaders told the Foundation how their organizations are sharing resources and providing vital resources for critical human needs, nurturing and healing, regardless of whether they identify with a specific faith. The Foundation also heard how communities of faith are catalyzing their congregants and the broader community around social and racial justice issues.

Theres great news when it comes to churches and grants. While churches are not your typical 5013 organization, they are a not-for-profit and do qualify for grant funding.
Most people are unaware of this. As always, I dont recommend any organization rely on grants as their main funding stream. That said, if your church has capital needs or specific projects, grants might be just the thing you need.
Grant research is not the easiest task to undertake. Theres a reason we offer Grant Research as a service that people are happy to pay for! Research require a bit of skill, practice, and patience. While it isnt brain surgery, research can be time consuming and at times frustrating.
As we focus on churches and grants, you should know that there some good options. There are many foundations that exist specifically to advance the mission of specific churches, denominations, religious beliefs, schools of theology, sabbaticals for clergy and faith-based nonprofits.
How can you locate these funds? This type of research is the same as all the rest, you just have to know where to look.
There are funds for building, renovation, education, programs, projects and community services that churches and missions provide. One specific example is The Duke Endowment. One of their priority areas is Rural Methodist Churches. That is a super-specific type of funding that they provide in NC.

Oldham Little Church Foundation
The foundation focuses its grantmaking on small Evangelical Protestant churches with congregations ranging in size from 35 to 300. Established in 1949 in Texas by Morris Calvin Oldham, preference is given to completion grants for facility/building project needs in the form of repairs, renovations, and new construction projects.

Educational funding is targeted toward inner city Catholic schools as well as scholarship funds for Catholic high schools and universities.
Can Religious Or Faith
The simple answer is yes. Foundations prefer to give to applicants with 501 exempt status, and places of worship, including churches, mosques and synagogues, and faith-based organizations generally qualify for 501 status.
However, foundations vary in their giving interests. Even those that give to faith-based organizations vary in the types of projects they will or will not support. Some will require projects to benefit the larger community beyond the church’s membership while others will not.

Does your church need 501 status?
According to the IRS, churches and religious organizations that meet the requirements of IRC section 501 are automatically considered tax exempt and are not required to apply for and obtain recognition of tax-exempt status from the IRS.
However, getting “official” 501 status — that is, being listed in IRS Publication 78 and having a 501 determination letter on file — can assure church leaders, members, and prospective and current donors that the church is recognized as exempt. This can help a church qualify for more foundation grant opportunities, as well as other related tax benefits, like exemption from certain state and local taxes, and ability to guarantee that all contributions, including tithes and offerings, are tax-deductible to donors.
