Growth In England And Abroad
Although the Particular Baptists were to represent the major continuing Baptist tradition, the General Baptists were first to appear. In 1608 religious persecution induced a group of Lincolnshire Separatists to seek asylum in Holland. A contingent settled in Amsterdam with John Smyth , a Cambridge graduate, as their minister another group moved to Leiden under the leadership of John Robinson. When the question of baptism arose during a debate on the meaning of church membership, Smyth concluded that, if the Separatist contention that churches of the apostolic constitution consisted of saints only was correct, then baptism should be restricted to believers only. This, he contended, was the practice of the New Testament churches, for he could find no scriptural support for baptizing infants. Smyth published his views in The Character of the Beast and in the same year proceeded to baptize first himself and then 36 others, who joined him in forming a Baptist church. Shortly thereafter Smyth became aware of a Mennonite community in Amsterdam and began to question his act of baptizing himself. This could be justified, he concluded, only if there was no true church from which a valid baptism could be obtained. After some investigation Smyth recommended union with them. This was resisted by Thomas Helwys and other members of the group, who returned to England in 1611 or 1612 and established a Baptist church in London. The parent group in Amsterdam soon disappeared.

A ‘blow To America’s Safety’
Lawyers for the victims struck a harsher tone, claiming the brief “dealt a blow to America’s safety” by asking the Fifth Circuit to find that background checks “do not work to prevent gun violence.”
Critics say the DOJ’s argument stands in direct conflict with President Joe Biden’s efforts to bolster background checks and “red flag” laws that deny guns to people who are deemed to be dangerous.
“Background checks save lives, and President Biden has made that the backbone of his gun safety policy. And hes right. But his own DOJ disagrees,” said Jamal Alsaffar, lead trial attorney for the victims. “At this critical moment, the Biden DOJ is cutting off the administrations nose to spite their own face.”
The Brady Background Check System has prevented the sale of more than 4.5 million firearms since its inception, said Kris Brown, president of gun safety advocacy group Brady: United Against Gun Violence. “However, like any system, it is dependent on maintenance and updated information,” Brownsaid.

Sutherland Springs Victims ‘need This Money’
Attorney Rob Ammons said that, for his clients, the appeal delays the payment of damages that many need to pay for healthcare. “There’s people that still need surgery. There’s people that still need help,” Macias said.
In October, several gun safety groups signed a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland calling on him to withdraw the appeal and “accept responsibility for its failures,” as in the cases of Charleston and Parkland.
In 2021, the Justice Department reached an $88 million settlement with victims’ families and survivors of the 2015 shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, over claims the agency was negligent in failing to prohibit the sale of the firearm used in the massacre.
The following year, the U.S. agreed to pay $127.5 million to the families affected by the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, over claims the FBI failed to stop the gunman despite receiving information he intended to cause violence.
“If were going to talk the talk about background checks, then even when its the government that has messed up, we need to walk the walk,” Ammons said.

Association With Brown University
Central to the movement for greater recognition and growth was the creation of an educated ministry and the founding of a college. The Philadelphia Association of Baptist Churches sent Dr. James Manning to Rhode Island to found the college in the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1764. Beginning in Warren, the college then relocated to Providence in 1770. The college president, Manning, was called to be the pastor of the Providence church in 1771. During his ministry the present Meeting House was erected “for the publick worship of Almighty God and also for holding commencement in.” Subsequent Brown presidents Jonathan Maxcy and Francis Wayland also served as ministers at the church.
The Brown family that soon gave its name to the university were prominent members of the church, and descendants of its founders and those of the Rhode Island Colony ” rel=”nofollow”> Chad Brown). Although the university is now secular, in honor of its history and tradition, the meetinghouse continues to be used, as it has been since 1776, as the site of Brown University’s undergraduate commencement.

Construction Alterations And Designations
Construction of the church began in the summer of 1774 at the time, the project was the largest building project ever attempted in New England. Due to the closure of the Massachusetts ports by the British as punishment for the Boston Tea Party, out-of-work ship builders and carpenters came to Providence to work on the meetinghouse. The main portion of the meetinghouse was dedicated in mid-May 1775, and the steeple erected in three and a half days in the first week of June.
Notable additions to the meetinghouse have included a Waterford crystal chandelier given by Hope Brown Ives , a large pipe organ given by her brother Nicholas Brown Jr., the younger the addition of rooms for Sunday school, a fellowship hall, and offices on the lower level , and an addition to the east end of the meetinghouse to accommodate an indoor baptistery . The 1884 addition included a large stained glass window that was soon deemed inappropriate and shuttered over.
In 1957, John D. Rockefeller Jr. funded a restoration effort that removed Victorian additions to the building, returning much of the church’s interior to its original appearance.
Notably absent from the interior is a gallery originally constructed on the church’s western side for use by slaves and free black residents of Providence.
A History Of First Baptist Church 1879 Present
Upon his arrival from Virginia, Reverend George Washington Holland held regular worship services in the brush arbors of Winston-Salem. He also conducted services at the homes of his followers and at Hinshaws Hall at the corner of 4th and Chestnut Streets. In early 1879, Rev. Holland officially organized First Baptist Church, the first African American Baptist church in the city of Winston. He was assisted by the Rev. Henry Brown, the white pastor of the then Winston Baptist Church and his deacons. On July 23, 1879, the newly formed congregation took the deed of the property on the southeast corner of 6th and Chestnut Streets. This land was purchased from the United Brethren of Salem for $75.00.
The congregation continued to worship at various locations until 1882 when it was able to erect a large wooden edifice that fronted on Sixth Street. In the basement of this building was housed the first grammar school for African Americans in the city. The school was conducted by Miss Addie C. Morris, the Shaw University-educated missionary and member of First Baptist Church.
The congregation grew and in 1897, construction began on a new and larger edifice that fronted on Chestnut Street. Five years later, a magnificent brick-faced structure with impressive stained glass windows was completed. This structure was considered one of the most modern churches of its era constructed solely by African American artisans and builders. The new church was dedicated on Sunday, July 27, 1902.

Development In The United States
Baptist churches in the English colonies of North America were largely indigenous in origin, being the product of the leftward movement that was occurring among the colonial Puritans at the same time as it was in England. While some emigrants went to the New World as Baptists, it was more typical for them to adopt Baptist views after their arrival in the colonies, as happened in the case of Henry Dunster, the first president of Harvard College, and Roger Williams.

First Baptist Church Excavation Project
Colonial Williamsburg has partnered with the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg and the Let Freedom Ring Foundation to locate the remains of the Nassau Street site of the First Baptist Church. The First Baptist Church of Williamsburg is one of the countrys earliest African American congregations and was founded by free and enslaved Black worshippers. This project will guide how this site is interpreted, commemorated, and ultimately recreated so present and future generations may learn about this nationally significant Church.
In the first phase of excavation, the team located the foundation of the 1856 church, along with the remains of an earlier building. While we do not yet know whether the remains of the early structure represent the Baptist Meeting House, where the congregation worshipped beginning in the early 19th century, a second phase of work is set to begin in January 2021 and hopes to answer that question and many more. In the second, expanded phase of excavation, the team will be taking a closer look at the previously identified structure and searching for others on the lot to try and locate the building where the congregation first met for worship in the city of Williamsburg.
