Turtle Creek Parkway Park
Built in 1913, Turtle Creek Parkway park is a 23.7-acre linear park in between Turtle Creek and Turtle Creek Boulevard in the aptly named neighborhood. Archaeological surveys discovered dart points and flint chips dating 3,000 years to 1,000 BCE. This site was later discovered to be home to Native Americans who cherished the trees and natural spring water. The park is across Turtle Creek from , designed by .

Established in 1868, the congregation of First Baptist Church of Dallas demonstrated its commitment to downtown. When the congregation found itself facing a new century with aging, ineffective and unwelcoming facilities, the congregation embarked on an ambitious expansion project to recreate and rebirth its campus as an Urban Oasis. Becks design team strategically removed outdated buildings to make way for new worship, educational and community spaces. The buildings placement creates a new front door and gateway for the campus, while also creating a stronger sense of visibility and connection within the campus. Foundational to the new campus plan was the creation of First Baptists first new worship space since 1891. Celebrating the churchs long ministry legacy, the historic sanctuary was preserved. A new efficient five-story education center and 500-car garage replaced outdated structures and surface lots. The focal point of the new campus is a towering cross-topped fountain and pool with outdoor baptistry residing within Fountain Plaza.

Robert Jeffress, Jr. was born to parents Robert Jeffress, Sr. and Julia Caroline “Judy” Fielder . Jeffress and his wife, Amy Lyon Renard, have two daughters. Jeffress received a B.S. degree from a degree from and a from in , Texas. In May 2010, he was awarded a degree from .
In 1986, Jeffress was a contestant on the syndicated nighttime edition of the popular game show , hosted by , winning $4,550 over four days. Jeffress grew up under pastor of First Baptist Dallas, citing him as an influence on his ministry.
On August 12, 2007, he was elected pastor of First Baptist Dallas, now a of 14,000 members, succeeding . Previously, Jeffress had been the senior pastor of First Baptist Church in since 1992. He had been the senior pastor of First Baptist Church in , from 1985 to 1992. In 2006, Jeffress received the Daniel Award from . In 2011, the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary awarded Jeffress a distinguished alumni award for the impact of his ministry in Texas.

Civil War To Late 19th Century
Texas was at war again after the . At this time, blacks comprised 30 percent of the state’s population, and they were overwhelmingly enslaved. When was elected, South Carolina seceded from the Union. Five other quickly followed. A state convention considering secession opened in Austin on January 28, 1861. On February 1, by a vote of 1668, the convention adopted an from the United States. Texas voters approved this Ordinance on February 23, 1861. Texas joined the newly created Confederate States of America on March 4, 1861, ratifying the permanent on March 23.
Not all Texans favored secession initially, although many of the same would later support the Southern cause. Texas’s most notable was the state Governor, . Not wanting to aggravate the situation, Houston refused two offers from President Lincoln for Union troops to keep him in office. After refusing to swear an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy, Houston was deposed as governor. Around 2,000 Texans served in the , with a large contingent of recent immigrants in being a Unionist stronghold.
