First Baptist Church has its origins in the oldest Baptist congregation in Jacksonville, Bethel Baptist Church, established in 1838. The church experienced a period of considerable growth in the mid-20th century, eventually encompassing eleven square blocks of downtown Jacksonville. Several former pastors, including Homer G. Lindsay Jr. and Jerry Vines, were widely influential in the Southern Baptist Convention, leading it in both growth and a shift towards conservatism.

Th Century To Present

The church did not fare well in the early 20th century. By 1940, First Baptist had accumulated a debt of $125,000 and saw its educational building repossessed by its creditors. That year, the church hired Homer Lindsay Sr. as their senior pastor. Under his leadership the church reversed its fortunes, and within a few years it paid off its debt, acquired a new education building, and grew its congregation. In 1969 First Baptist hired Lindsay’s son, Homer G. Lindsay Jr., as co-pastor he took over sole pastoral duties upon his father’s retirement in 1975. Under Lindsay Jr. the church experienced even faster growth, emerging as a megachurch with thousands of members and many new buildings, including a new 3,500-seat auditorium.

Jerry Vines joined Lindsay as co-pastor in 1982. First Baptist grew even further, becoming a major power in the Southern Baptist Convention and adding a 10,000-seat auditorium in 1993. Vines became a key leader in the growing Convention and was a major figure in its shift toward strict conservatism. Vines and First Baptist Church received national attention in June 2002 for Vines’ controversial statements regarding Islam. Lindsay died in 2000 and Vines retired in 2006 Mac Brunson was hired as senior pastor that year. Recent developments include the establishment of First Baptist Academy and of a satellite campus of the church in neighboring St. Johns County. Heath Lambert is the current senior pastor.

We are helping to collecting gifts for children up through age 12 in our Donnor Park ministry and outreach to the community. The gifts do not have to be wrapped. First Baptist Church To Sell 90% Of Its Downtown Property

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. First Baptist Church of Jacksonville has announced plans to reduce its downtown buildings from ten city blocks to just one.

Membership for the 181-year-old church peaked in the 1980s and 90s. At its height, about 12,000 people packed the sanctuary.

Recently, membership has declined. Pastor Heath Lambert said about 3,000 people now attend church on Sundays. Lambert took over leadership of the church after Pastor Mac Brunson left in 2018. Brunson worked at the church 12 years.

The church plans to sell nine of its 10 blocks and Lambert tells News4Jax that offers have already come in. The church sold another block of its downtown property last year.

We want to work with the city. We want to work with investors and developers and brokers to figure out how the north end of downtown Jacksonville can be a remarkable place to live, Lambert said.

Lambert sat down with News4jax to talk about the changes and believes church members support his plan.

They have made a decision that our dreams for the future are more important than their memories, said Lambert.

Daniel Davis, the president of JAX Chamber, wants to work with the church and developers to grow this section of downtown. He believes it will work for retail, business and residential space.

Lambert plans to renovate the churchs oldest sanctuary, the Hobson Auditorium. It was built in 1904.

First Baptist has a new satellite campus in Nocatee. It will remain open.

First Baptist Church Jacksonville Consolidating Downtown Campus To 1 Block From 10

A pillar of faith in downtown Jacksonville for 181 years, First Baptist Church plans to consolidate its sprawling 10-block campus into one block in an effort to eliminate skyrocketing maintenance costs, while also rebuilding its dwindling congregation by extending its ministry to growing areas of Duval County.

The congregation Sunday morning overwhelmingly approved the plan that calls for borrowing $30 million to pay for the estimated 18- to 24-month project centered on the church’s historic Hobson Auditorium, 124 W. Ashley St.

Senior Pastor Heath Lambert detailed the proposal during his sermon at the morning service attended by an estimated 3,000 people in the main auditorium of the church at 119 W. Beaver St.

“This great and wonderful church is in a desperate season,” Lambert said. “Right now, today, we are losing money on property that we can’t afford.”

Lambert said Hobson Auditorium will be restored to once again serve as the church’s main worship center. The adjacent Administration and Lindsay buildings will be renovated into state-of-the-art educational, gathering and administrative spaces, he said.

“The Hobson Auditorium is the birthplace of the miracle of downtown Jacksonville,” Lambert said referring to First Baptist Church.

Restoring it means going back to the church’s roots, he said.

Ultimately, the nine neighboring blocks comprising the church’s campus will be sold, and the money used to pay off the loan financing the consolidation project.
