Were Responsible For Our Neighbors: Two Churches Team Up For 46

Refocus on Jesus

Dwelling Place, a nonprofit housing developer, is working with two churches in Holland, Hope Church and First United Methodist Church, to build a 46-unit affordable housing development.

HOLLAND, MI Two churches have teamed up with nonprofit housing provider Dwelling Place to build at 46-unit apartment development, with 11 units reserved for people with disabilities, in downtown Holland.

The development, whose units would be reserved for low- to moderate-income residents, would be built on property owned by Hope Church and First United Methodist Church near the corner of 10th Street and Pine Avenue.

Officials say the housing is needed as rental rates and home prices continue to climb.

For many working-class families, housing is getting harder and harder to find, said Jeremy DeRoo, CEO of Dwelling Place, which is based in Grand Rapids. There is an increased number of people who are looking to move to West Michigan, and places like Holland are attracting people, and prices continue to increase.

Ottawa County is one of the fastest growing counties in Michigan, expanding 12.3% between 2010 and 2020. Business growth in the community, including a $1.7 billion expansion by battery maker LG Energy Solution thats expected to create 1,200 jobs by 2025, has highlighted the need for more housing, officials say.

The idea for the development was born out of conversations between the two churches.

Holland Organizations Partner To Provide Showers Mail Community Support And Services For Individuals Without Access To Safe Stable Housing Launched February 2019

First United Methodist Church of Holland and Community Action House are pleased to announce a new program providing free showers, mail service, and drop-in center to provide relief for individuals experiencing homelessness. On Tuesday mornings, showers and services will be offered at First United Methodist Church, located on 10th St between Pine and River in Holland, MI.

“Knowing how important shower access is to human dignity, it seemed important and an issue of faith and justice to make a way to safely offer our showers to people in our area who are experiencing homelessness, said LuAnne Stanley Hook, Director of Community Involvement for First United Methodist Church of Holland. We are beyond thrilled to be able to offer this to our community.”

The program aims to be a safe place for respite and provide hot showers where all are welcome. Again and again, the individuals were connecting with share the value and difficulty of maintaining hygiene, said Angela Maxwell, Homeless Outreach Specialist for Community Action House. The need for showers exists. Were looking forward to building trust in this service for those that will most benefit from it. The reality is that no one wants to feel badly about their appearance or condition, and through this program, that reality can begin to change for the better.

In 2011, we are celebrating 150 years of ministry in Holland. We were the first English-speaking congregation here and we praise God for the opportunity to bring our witness to this community as the people called Methodist.

The purpose of First United Methodist Church of Holland is to help all people become ardent followers of Jesus Christ. To do so, we gather for worship, for study and prayer, and for service to our community and the world. We are an intergenerational congregation seeking to live out United Methodist faith and practice with open hearts, open minds, and open doors.

Volunteer work done by church: We provide a ministry called Justice for Our Neighbors which offers legal services, hospitality and advocacy to immigrants in our community. We are leaders and volunteers at P.E.T., Holland. This factory produces Personal Energy Transportation vehicles for children with mobility challenges around the world.
