What Does It Mean To Give Thanks

Give Thanks For Everything

The meaning of thanksgiving in the Bible is multifaceted. We can pull out a definition of âthanksgivingâ by looking at specific words. But the meaning of these words can take on varied nuances depending on their contextâespecially in the Old Testament.

Let me explain.

In the Old Testament, youâll see that thanksgiving has limited expression. For instance, Bible verses about thanksgiving in the Old Testament are closely tied to âpraise.â In other words, the people would praise God for who he is or for delivering them from a bad situation .

In the New Testament, verses in the Bible about thanksgiving expand upon the limited scope of the concept in the Old Testament. What we see in the New Testament is that âthanksgivingâ becomes a way of life for Christiansâin the good times and the bad.

What does all of this mean?

In the end, to give thanks can include praising God for who is and what he has done for you, and it can also involve a general expression of gratitude.

How Can Christians Be Thankful In All Circumstances

The key to being thankful in all circumstances – good or bad – is to keep God in perspective. As believers, we need to bring God into all situations we face. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God .

We are to keep God in mind always as we go about our daily lives. Doing so will ensure that we not only acknowledge His presence but are able to express gratitude. His love truly is everlasting To help ourselves keep God in perspective we can take three initiatives.

First, we can spend time reminding ourselves of Gods truths. Our lack of thankfulness may result from such issues as pride or despair. The Bible gives us the answer to how we treat such circumstances. Whenever we face hard times in life, the Bible is clear that God will renew us . We should not only be aware of this fact, but grateful for Gods eventual deliverance.

Secondly, we can ensure a spirit of gratitude by being in community. Through accountability and discussions with other Christians, we can be reminded of all the good God does on a daily basis.

Lastly, we can perfect an attitude of gratitude through practice. We can take practical steps such as journaling reasons we are grateful every day, or taking time each day to pause and reflect on moments of appreciation.

Much like gratitude from a child makes a parent smile, so to do we when we honor God by showing Him our appreciation. After all, without Him where would we be?

Reasons To Give Thanks To The Lord: Inspiration From The New Testament

The New Testament is full of verses about thankfulness. From Jesus thanking His Heavenly Father to Pauls deep gratitude to God, thankful Bible verses in the New Testament encourage us to praise God in all circumstances. Here are five passages that help us say Thank you God!

Colossians 3:16Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God withgratitudein your hearts.

Hebrews 12:28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us bethankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

2 Corinthians 9:11You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result inthanksgivingto God.

Philippians 4:6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, withthanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philemon 1:4-5I always thank my Godas I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy peopleand your faith in the Lord Jesus.

Prophet Daniel Gave Thanks To God

The story of Daniel is a popular and inspiring story about faith in God through all things. God blessed Daniel, a Jew brought as a captive from Jerusalem to Babylon at the age of twelve, and he becomes one of the wise men in king Nebuchadnezzars palace.

Then came a crisis when the king forgets a dream he had but, as strange as it may seem, expected his wise me to come up with his dream or else face the death penalty. An impossible assignment.

But God answered Daniels prayer and revealed the dream and its interpretation. What is Daniels response? He immediately gives thanks to God with a prayer of thanksgiving:

I offer thanks and praise to you, God of my fathers, because you have given me wisdom and power. And now you have let me know what we asked of you, for you have let us know the kings mystery. Daniel 2:23 CSB

We can say that Daniel thanked God in response to answered prayers. Dont we all do the same? How about when things didnt go that well? Yes, Daniel faced that situation a little later in his life. It happened during the reign of another king when Daniel had to face a royal decree that everyone should only pray to the king and no one else.

When the kings order curbing the freedom of prayer was announced, Daniel calmly and deliberately continued to pray and thank his God openly. The Bible says:

As the story goes, Daniel was punished for being true to his beliefs by being thrown into a lions den and God miraculously rescued him.

Verses On Giving Thanks

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it seems appropriate that we take time to give thanks to God for all of His abundant blessings to us. In fact, the Bible often tells us to give thanks, and here are some Bible verses about giving thanks. When our hearts give thanks, it helps us to give praise and credit where credit is due, and our hearts rejoice as well, as we take the time to reflect on all of the good gifts our Father has given us. James 1:17 says: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

So here are 15 verses on giving thanks.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Psalm 100:4

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, [And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

Colossians 4:2

Philippians 4:6

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body and be thankful.

Psalm 69:30

Psalm 28:7

Be Thankful In The Small Stuff

Being thankful in everything starts with the small stuff of life, where we can be watchful for the everyday type of issues that trigger ungrateful attitudes, like losing a parking space, or being caught in road construction or a traffic jam, or having a household appliance break downall little things that can throw our attitudes off course.

Because Psalm 100:4 encourages us to enter His gates with thanksgiving, we can choose to start each day by giving thanks to God in our everyday circumstances.

Recently our family experienced a broken washing machine. Recognizing the potential stress and inconvenience associated with unwashed clothes, and how it could affect our attitudes in a negative way, we kept attentive to the risk.

As we considered whether it could be fixed or needed replacing, instead of focusing on what we didnt have at the moment, we thanked God for all the years weve had one that works.

Through the experience, we gained a renewed appreciation for having a washing machine. With our new one, we give thanks to God on a daily basis for being able to run a load of laundry.

Give Thanks In Everything Vs For Everything

12 Uplifting Thanksgiving Bible Verses to Share on Facebook

The misunderstanding comes in thinking were supposed to give thanks for everything when God is leading us to give thanks in everything.

Its a concept some of us struggle with and resist, thinking God is telling us to be thankful for the difficulties. This makes us miss what He is really leading us to do, which is to be thankful despite the problems, to not let disappointments, failures, losses, and hurts keep us from being thankful to Him.

During tumultuous times, God asks us to focus on Him and His faithfulness to us, rather than on our circumstances to dwell on His promise to never leave or forsake us , and to trust Him to help us in every situation we face in life.

How do we begin to give thanks in everything?

The Thanking Person Of Jesus

In the Gospels, we see wonderful examples of Jesus giving thanks. We often see Him give thanks to the Father for the basic provision of food and for hearing His prayers.

But the Gospels also record how Jesus offered thanks and praise in even the most adverse situations. For instance, in Matthew 11 the Lord Jesus speaks of how He had been rejected repeatedly by cities Hed visited. In this rejection, Jesus suffered the slander of the very people He had come to save. But what was His response? Jesus didnt complain, bemoan His terrible situation, or feel sorry for Himself. No. In verses 25-26, He instead prayed this prayer:

I extol You, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for thus it has been well-pleasing in Your sight.

How wonderful Jesus is! Here we see Jesus actually extolling the Father, acknowledging His will in all things, including the rejection and slandering. He gave thanks to the Father in all situations and for all things.
