When Did Glory To God In The Highest Become A Song

Glory to God originated as a song, sung by an army of angels the night Christ was born. It still resounds, especially during the Christmas season. Dating back to the 4th century, the Latin version translated into the words we sing today surfaced around the year 690. Johann Sebastian Bach composed the famous cantata, Glory to God in the Highest, in 1743-1745. A cantata is a choral composition, as a lyric drama set to music but not to be acted. The tune was taken from a previous piece, and debuted on Christmas Day to celebrate the Peace of Dresden, celebrating relief from the Second Silesian War.

The Gloria, as the song is often referred to, is sung throughout the year as well as at Christmastime. Multiple versions of the song, by various artists, play throughout the Christmas season. Additionally, the passage from Luke, Chapter 2 is referenced in many carols in remembrance and celebration of Christs birth on earth. The refrain of the popular Christmas song, Angels We Have Heard on High, has ancient history. People began to chant the phrase in worship services beginning in about 130 AD, Whitney Hopler recorded, In medieval times, French shepherds called this phrase out to each other when they were watching their flocks of sheep outside. Hark the Harold Angels Sing, written by Charles Wesley in 1739, also breathes anthems of the army angles singing of Christs birth to the shepherds in Bethlehem.

Bible Verses On The Glory Of God

Behold His Glory What is the glory of God? is certainly one of the most foundational questions to answer in all of Christianity because the glory of God is so central to the gospel, the Bible, and everything God does. The glory of God is the invisible qualities, character, or attributes of God displayed in a visible way.Do you take time to reflect on these yourself? What Does Whatever You Do Do It All For The Glory Of God In 1 Corinthians : 31 Mean

The Heavens Declare.

The concept of glorifying God is that of honoring God with ones life. First Corinthians 10, teaches believers to honor the Lord in all they do:

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.1 Corinthians 10:31.

The context of this verse includes a discussion of the freedom believers have in Christ. We are free to make personal choices in life, but we are not to do anything that causes another person to stumble or sin in his own walk with God. We are to seek the good of others.

Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.1 Corinthians 10:3233

Further, believers may have the right to do anything, but not everything is beneficial . Paul used the illustration of eating meat that had been dedicated to idols. To him, such a dedication meant nothing since idols are not real gods. However, he would abstain from eating meat for the good of others who might sin by following his example. Believers serve the Lord both through their personal lives and in their actions toward others.

To glorify God requires full commitment to Him. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men Colossians 3:23

Like A Telescope Not A Microscope

But this means that when God says he made us for his glory, he does not mean he made us so that he could become more glorious in himself. Instead what Isaiah 43:7 means is that he created us to display his glory, that is, that his glory might be known and praised. This is the goal of God with which we must be aligned in our hearts and actions if we hope to escape his wrath at the judgment.

This becomes clearer as we page through Isaiah:

I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might .

Sing, O heavens for the Lord has done it shout, O depths of the earth break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest and every tree in it! For the Lord has redeemed Jacob and will be glorified in Israel .

In response to her redemption, Israel will join the skies and valleys and mountains and forests in singing praise to the Lord. The Lords glory will be known and praised and displayed to the nations.

But Isaiah 48:911 makes even clearer what it means for God to seek his own glory in creating and redeeming his people:

For My names sake I defer my anger, for the sake of My praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off.Behold, I have refined you but not like silver I have tried you in the furnace of affliction. For My own sake, for My own sake I do it,for how should My name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.

Crossing God Means We Need Gods Cross

The second thing that needs to be stressed is this: God will not allow his name to be profaned indefinitely. Though he is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, he will not tolerate forever those who do not give him glory, but instead regard something else as more glorious, more worthy of allegiance. My glory I will not give to another. Thats why I said at the beginning, it is a fearful thing to be at cross-purposes with your maker. There is a judgment day and the issue for every one of us will be: Have we been with God in his great goal to glorify himself or has his glory been a matter of indifference to us or even animosity?

We are left with two great questions, which I am to answer next Sunday, if God wills:

  • How do we bring our lives into alignment with Gods goal to glorify himself? What sorts of things must we think and feel and do for God to get glory from us? Is it another weight to make us sigh or is it wings to let us fly?

  • Why is it right for God to seek his own glory when he tells us in his Word we should not seek our own glory? How can it be loving and not selfish for God to create us for his glory?

What Is The Meaning Of Glory To God In The Highest In The Bible

Glory to God in the highest is located in the Gospel of Luke. From Pauls writings, we know that Luke was a physician and a gentile. The method in which he wrote his gospel account reflects the observant and detailed recording of the events he witnessed.

Through Lukes account of the night of Christs birth, we hear a heavenly choir of angels singing Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. The army of angels sang to shepherds on the night watch. The audience God chose is significant, and a detail Luke undoubtedly held close to his Gentile heart. Night-watch shepherds were the most undesirable class of people, and the perfectly represented what Jesus came to accomplish. Here, a heavenly choir of angels, singing to lowly, underserving shepherds.

The NIV Study Bible notes the ruler Augustus trying to convince the people he had established peace through propaganda. Though he had conquered immediate neighbors that harbored a threat, there were still enemies to fear. However, no political ploy or human strength could usher in peace but God, Himself. And He does so through Jesus. A few verses back , Luke records the prose that prefaced the angels song: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you he is Messiah, the Lord. The Moody Bible Commentary explains the triple title given to Jesus, Savior-Christ-Lord, highlight His mission, His royalty, and His authority.

    Gods Goal In Creating Israel

Pin on Inspirational Quotes & Verses

So this Sunday and next Sunday I want to talk about these two questions. First, What is Gods goal in creating and governing the world, especially in creating and overruling humanity? Then next Sunday, How do we bring our lives into harmony with that goal?

The text I have chosen to focus on is Isaiah 43:17. Lets read it in context:

But now, thus says the Lord, your creator, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel, Do not fear, for I have redeemed you I have called you by name you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior I have given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place. Since you are precious in My sight, since you are honored and I love you, I will give other men in your place and other peoples in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you I will bring your offspring from the east, and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, Give them up! and to the south, Do not hold them back. Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed even whom I have made.

No matter how deep we probe into the motives of God, we will never arrive at a layer which is not love.
