Status In The Lds Church

Church History: Complete Documentary AD 33 to Present

History of Joseph Smith was initially published as an official publication of the LDS Church. Although Roberts’s History of the Church has never been granted “official history” status, it nonetheless is widely used in the church and is often cited in the sermons and magazine articles written by general authorities and other church leaders.

In 1851, extracts from what would become History of Joseph Smith were published in a church publication entitled Pearl of Great Price. This book was canonized by the LDS Church on October 10, 1880. The portion of History of Joseph Smith that was canonized consists of Smith’s recitation of events between his birth in 1805 and May 1829 and is officially entitled Joseph SmithHistory.

Although History of the Church is no longer an official publication, it is the most-cited source in two histories of the church which are official publications of LDS Church: Our Heritage: A Brief History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Church History in the Fulness of Times.

The Beginning Of The Church In The Philippines

On 28 April 1961, Elder Gordon B. Hinckley traveled to the islands and met with a small group of American residents, servicemen and Filipino members. He officially opened the islands for missionary work. Elder Hinckley told a group gathered at the American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila in 1961. Influence Of The Enlightenment

The had a significant influence on the Campbell movement.:806 Thomas Campbell was a student of the Enlightenment .:82 While he did not explicitly use the term “essentials” in the , Thomas proposed the same solution to religious division as had been advanced earlier by and Locke: “educe religion to a set of essentials upon which all reasonable persons might agree.”:80 The essentials he identified were those practices for which the Bible provided: “a ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ either in express terms or by approved precedent.”:81 Unlike Locke, who considered the earlier efforts by Puritans to be inherently divisive, Thomas argued for “a complete restoration of apostolic Christianity.”:82 Thomas believed that creeds served to divide Christians. He also believed that the Bible was clear enough that anyone could understand it and, thus, creeds were unnecessary.:114

The American Restoration Movement

The International Church Of Christ In Recent Times:

In 1990 the Crossroads Church of Christ broke with the movement and, through a letter written to The Christian Chronicle, attempted to restore relations with the Churches of Christ. By the early 1990s, some first-generation leaders had become disillusioned by the movement and left. The movement was first recognized as an independent religious group in 1992 when John Vaughn, a church growth specialist at Fuller Theological Seminary, listed them as a separate entity.

TIME magazine ran a full-page story on the movement in 1992 calling them one of the worlds fastest-growing and most innovative bands of Bible thumpers that had grown into a global empire of 103 congregations from California to Cairo with total Sunday attendance of 50,000. A formal break was made from the Churches of Christ in 1993 when the group organized under the name International Churches of Christ. This new designation formalized a division that was already in existence between those involved with the Crossroads/Boston Movement and original Churches of Christ. Growth in the ICOC was not without criticism.

Nearly a year later, in November 2002 he resigned from the office and personally apologized citing arrogance, anger, and an over-focus on numerical goals as the source of his decision.

Christian Churches And Churches Of Christ

The group of churches known as the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ is a fellowship of congregations within the Restoration Movement that have no formal denominational affiliation with other congregations, but still share many characteristics of belief and worship. Churches in this tradition are strongly congregationalist and have no formal denominational ties, and thus there is no proper name that is agreed to apply to the movement as a whole. Most congregations in this tradition include the words “Christian Church” or “Church of Christ” in their congregational name. Due to the lack of formal organization between congregations, there is a lack of official statistical data, but the 2016 Directory of the Ministry documents some 5000 congregations in the USA and Canada some estimate the number to be over 6,000 since this directory is unofficial.

Radical Restoration Needed To Become True Simple Christians

The above timeline shows that the Churches of Christ, , were formally split in 1906 from the Campbells disciples and the Stone Christians. The Campbells urged the abandonment of all church names and creeds, using only the Bible as the source for doctrine. They believed in the immersion of believers in Christ, for the remission of sins. They urged all Christians to unite as one. Sadly, three church names emerged from their efforts: Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, and Christian Church. So much for giving up formal designations!

Tracing backwards through the history, we see Stone and the Campbells influenced by their Presbyterian education. Although they rejected and denounced Calvinism, my point is that their attempts to become merely disciples of Christ, or Christians, only, were hampered by their religious education. They carried forward some of the practices and doctrines from their past, although their effort was to find and obey what the Bible taught.

The Presbyterians came forth from the Scottish Reformation, which was influenced by the Anglican Church, or Church of England. The Church of England had broken from the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholics were influenced by those whom they call the Church Fathersmost of whom have proved themselves unreliable by their deviations from the scriptures of the Holy Bible. They made up rules and doctrines.

Factors Leading To The Separation

Disagreement over centralized organizations above the local congregational level, such as missionary societies and conventions, was one important factor leading to the separation of the from the . After the more congregations began using instruments, which led to growing controversy.:414 The greatest acceptance was among congregations in the Northern states very few congregations in the used instruments in worship.:414415

While music and the approach to missionary work were the most visible issues, there were also some deeper ones, such as basic differences in the underlying approach to Biblical interpretation. For the Churches of Christ, any practices not present in accounts of New Testament worship were not permissible in the church, and they could find no New Testament documentation of the use of instrumental music in worship. For the Christian Churches, any practices not expressly forbidden could be considered.:2427 The exacerbated the cultural tensions between the two groups.

The International Churches of Christ has a number of distinctives. One is a strong emphasis on discipleship however, discipleship in the ICOC often looks very different from what most other churches practice. Many who have left the ICOC have reported heavy shepherding tactics. That is, they experienced high-pressure, intrusive, and abusive or spiritually manipulative tactics at the hand of the leader they were assigned to.

Another distinction is that the International Churches of Christ focuses its evangelism almost exclusively on college students through campus groups such as Campus Advance, Christian Students Association, and Disciples on Campus. This fits well with the ICOCs preferred method of love-bombing suddenly and purposefully surrounding a person with high amounts of friendly contact, various forms of aid, and an overall sense of being immersed in a community things first-year college students especially crave. While none of these things are unbiblical , the International Churches of Christ use these virtues as a façade and manipulative tool to increase membership.

The International Churches of Christ has a strict and invasive power structure that uses manipulation and indoctrination to control its membership. Many people have been hurt by this group emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. Because of its manipulative practices and errant view of salvation.

The Christian Middle Ages

Most Christians, however, saw the hand of God in the happy wedding of Christian church and Roman state. In the East the marriage continued for a millennium. A mystical piety flourished under the protection of orthodox emperors until 1453 when invading Muslim Turks brought the Byzantine Empire to its final ruin. The fall of Constantinople, however, meant the rise of Moscow, the new capital of Eastern Orthodoxy. In the West it was a different story. After the fifth century, when barbarian Germans and Huns shattered the Empires defenses and swept into the eternal city of Rome itself, men turned to Augustines City of God for explanations. They found a vision for a new age. We call these centuries medieval. People who lived in them considered them Christian. Their reasons lie in the role of the pope, who stepped into the ruins of the fallen empire in the West and proceeded to build the medieval church upon Romes bygone glory. As the only surviving link with the Roman past, the Church of Rome mobilized Benedictine monks and deployed them as missionary ambassadors to the German people. It took centuries, but the popes, aided by Christian princes, slowly pacified and baptized a continent and called it Christendom, Christian Europe.

Subsequent Development Of The Unaffiliated Congregations

Independent Christian churches and churches of Christ have both organizational and hermeneutic differences with the churches of Christ.:186 For example, they have a loosely organized convention, and they view scriptural silence on an issue more permissively.:186 Nonetheless, they are much more closely related to the churches of Christ in their theology and ecclesiology than they are with the Christian Church .:186

The development of the unaffiliated as a separately identifiable religious body from the was a lengthy process.:185 The roots of the separation can be found in the polarization resulting from three major controversies that arose during the early 20th century.:185 One, which was a source of division in other religious groups, was “the theological development of modernism and liberalism.”:185 The early stages of the ecumenical movement, which led in 1908 to the , provide a second source of controversy.:185 The third was the practice of open membership, in which individuals who had not been baptized by immersion were granted full membership in the church.:185 Those who supported one of these points of view tended to support the others as well.:185

The official separation between the independent Christian churches and churches of Christ and the Christian Church is difficult to date.:407 Suggestions range from 1926 to 1971 based on the events outlined below:

The Westminster Confession of Faith spoke of the use of “the ordinary means” for reaching an understanding of what is contained in scripture and is necessary to know:

Chapter 1, Section VII. All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed, for salvation, are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them.

The Founders Believed In Adhering Solely To The Bible

Churches of Christ seek to follow the teachings of the Bible being the only source to find doctrine . Churches of Christ commonly see the Bible as historically authentic and accurate, unless the written context clearly designates differently. Regarding church disciplines, worship, and tradition, there is notable freedom from congregation to congregation in deciphering what is biblically admissible, as congregations are not regulated by a denominational authority. Their method to the Bible is inspired by the “assumption that the Bible is sufficiently plain and simple to render its message obvious to any sincere believer”. Linked to this is a presumption that the Bible presents an understandable “blueprint” or “constitution” for the church.

Formal Recognition In 1906

The began a religious census in 1906. Special Agents were used to collect information on those groups which had little or no formal organizational structure, such as the churches associated with the Restoration Movement. Officials working on the census noticed signs that the movement was no longer unified: the appeared at times to distance itself from the Disciples of Christ, and the Bureau had received at least one letter claiming that some “churches of Christ” were no longer affiliated with the “Disciples of Christ.”

To resolve the question, the , Simon Newton Dexter North, wrote a letter to , the editor of the Advocate. He asked:

I would like to know: 1. Whether there is a religious body called “Church of Christ,” not identified with the Disciples of Christ, or any other Baptist body? 2. If there is such a body, has it any general organization, with headquarters, officers, district or general conventions, associations or conferences? 3. How did it originate, and what are its distinctive principles? 4. How best can there be secured a complete list of the churches?

Lipscomb summarized the early history of the movement, described the “general organization of the churches under a missionary society with a moneyed membership” and the “adoption of instrumental music in the worship” as “a subversion of the fundamental principles on which the churches were based,” and then continued:

INTRODUCTION

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST was established in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost in AD 33, some days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ and His subsequent ascension to heaven. From this date, the church passed through trials and persecutions in the hands of the Jews as well as the Roman authorities who were the ruling power of the time. Before his death, Jesus promised to build His church , the fulfillment of which came to pass on the Day of Pentecost in AD 33. Jesus told the apostles that they will be persecuted . He talked about the level of sufferings that will come after His death. He predicted the destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem . The Scriptures are full of predictions about the establishment of the church in Jerusalem and her ultimate spread to all corners of the world. The church was thus established after Jesus shed His blood to purchase her . The early members of the church were called Christians .

For professing Jesus Christ, the early Christians were killed, fed to lions, burnt at the stake, banished to dark places and thrown into jail. Many were beheaded, some were crucified, yet they refused to deny Jesus Christ. As instruments of persecution forced them to run from one place to another they carried the message of the cross as pre-occupation. They never reneged in their services to God, despite the torrent of lies put on their heads by the Roman Emperors.

Briefly, this is how apostasy and corruption crept into the church and thrived.
