With MLA style, you need to cite the Bible two ways: in the text of your paper, and on your Works Cited page.

    In Text

The first time you include a quote from the Bible, you need to include the translation, chapter , book, and verse, like this:

Paul urges Christians to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” .

If you include quotations from the same translation later in your paper, you only need to include the book, chapter, and verse:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” .

    Works Cited

On your works cited page, your citation should include the translation you used the editor’s name, if given and the publication information. Examples are given below .

The English Standard Version Bible. New York: Oxford University Press, 2009. Print.

    1. Why We Need to Cite

Before we move to the steps of how to cite the Bible, you need to know why you need to do a proper citation. For any research paper, the citation of sources is important. This proves you’ve done the research to create compelling arguments.

Writing citations also lets people appreciate the meaning behind the quotations, and it provides respect to the original writer. To stop plagiarism, all the exact quotations must be quoted. Quoting your references accurately demonstrates you’re an accomplished and conscientious academic researcher.

    2. What You Will Need

Now, we’re moving to the steps on how to cite the Bible for the reference. To write a citation in the reference, you’ll need the following information:

    – Title of the Bible

    – Name of the editor

    – The version of the Bible

    – Publication information.

What you will need for your in-text citation:

    – The title of the Bible

    – The Bible verse, including book name, chapter and verse numbers

If I Am Citing An Online Version Of A Sacred Text And Each Chapter Is On A Separate Web Page Must Each Web Page Be Listed In The Works

Note: This post relates to content in the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook. For up-to-date guidance, see the ninth edition of the MLA Handbook.

No. You do not need to provide a separate works-cited-list entry for each hymn, chapter, or surah cited if there are several and they all come from the same general website, unless readers cannot easily find their way from that central place.

Lets say you are citing Genesis and Psalms from the website King James Bible Online. As the MLA Handbook notes, when you cite scripture, indicate at first instance, in either your prose or a parenthetical citation, the first element of the works-cited-list entry for the source. Then indicate the division of the Bible from which you borrowed the material .

In the example below, King James Bible Online is listed after the first quotation because the title of the edition is the first element of the works-cited-list entry. Gen. 1.22 indicates that the quotation comes from Genesis, chapter 1, verse 22. Since the second quotation is also from Genesis, the citation lists only chapter and verse numbers28.3. The third quotation is from the book of Psalms, so the citation is Ps. 128.3.

Many passages from the Bible encourage human reproduction, from Be fruitful, and multiply and And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful to Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house .
