The LDS Church teaches that, subsequent to the death of Jesus and his original apostles, his church, along with the authority to act in Jesus Christ’s name and the church’s attendant spiritual gifts, were lost, due to a combination of external persecutions and internal heresies. The restorationas represented by the church began by Joseph Smithrefers to a return of the authentic priesthood power, spiritual gifts, ordinances, living prophets and revelation of the primitive Church of Christ. Renouncing it is a political act its a way of making a political statement, not just a religious statement, she said.
She said it was unlikely that the church, which has more than 16 million members, would respond.
I think they care, but I dont think they are surprised by such public statements, Professor Flake, a church member, said. Theyve simply had too much experience with it to think that they will escape this kind of public engagement with their moral standards.

Activity Rates And Disaffiliation
The LDS Church does not release official statistics on church activity, but it is likely that only approximately 40 percent of its recorded membership in the United States and 30 percent worldwide regularly attend weekly Sunday worship services. A statistical analysis of the 2014 Pew Religious Landscape Survey assessed that “about one-third of those with a Latter-day Saint background… left the Church”, identifying as disaffiliated. Activity rates vary with age, and disengagement occurs most frequently between age 16 and 25. Young single adults are more likely to become inactive than their married counterparts, and overall, women tend to be more active than men.
Church humanitarian aid includes organizing food security, clean water, mobility, and healthcare initiatives, operating thrift stores, maintaining a service project website, and directly funding or partnering with other organizations. The church reports that the value of all donations in 2021 was $906 million. Independent reporting has found that the Church’s charity organization, LDS Charities, gave a total of $177 million from 2008 to 2020.

You should quit because they sing a song that praises Joseph Smith on a somewhat regular basis, and the fact that this hymn exists at all is justification enough to do so. Especially when you take into account the verse in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants that supposedly quotes God as saying that the song of the righteous is a plea to Him.

At age 26, I found myself in the Mormon church food bank and government cheese line needing sustenance for my three children. I was struggling as a single mother with a deadbeat ex-husband who repeatedly forgot to send any child support. If you had asked me at that moment what I envisioned the future to look like, never in a million years would I have said that I would finally find true happiness in my 60s.
The concept of happiness was pretty foreign to me. I was a scrappy tough kid, raised in a Mormon family riddled with mental illness, chaos and abuse. My brothers, sisters and I were constantly hungry as our mother was in and out of the psych ward and eventually abandoned us, and my 191-IQ genius father was both delusional and suicidal. We learned to fend for ourselves, dumpster diving on occasion, and yet we still scrubbed up and showed up for church as if everything was white-picket-fence-peachy fine. Honestly, we really didnt know any better since we were so young.

Oh, and did I mention that my parents were smoking and drinking Mormon swingers? And that when my mother left us, my father married her sister?
My colleagues were young, intelligent, ambitious people and none of them Mormon. For the first time, I realized that people outside of the church were actually happy and successful.

Raised in a conservative family in Utah, Archuleta’s life revolved around his faith. In 2008, he charmed the country with his boyish good looks and angelic vocals when he competed on American Idol, placing second after rocker David Cook. Everything was set out: no alcohol, no tobacco, no smoking, no sex before marriage, no gay relationships, God is your everything, go to church every Sunday, make sure you’re worthy to hold the temple recommend so that you can go to the temple, and make sure you believe in Jesus Christ, make sure you believe that the Book of Mormon is true and that the Bible is true, and follow the prophet everything he says is right and comes from God. One of the things I have always found curious about the Book of Mormon is the repeated descriptions of families with children who struggle with their faith. Itâs remarkable. Here are prophets who are writing about their own children who are struggling with sin or a crisis of faith. They could have left out those parts. But instead they described them for us.
Many of us will experience having a child, other family member, or dear friend reject or become indifferent to the gospel of Jesus Christ. My husband and I have a son who does not believe in our faith. It can be difficult to know what to do. But these Book of Mormon examples can help us find inspiration for our own families.

Social Events And Gatherings
Additional meetings are also held at the meetinghouse. Church officers may conduct leadership meetings or host training sessions and classes. The ward or branch community may schedule social activities at the meetinghouse, including dances, dinners, holiday parties and musical presentations. The church’s Young Men and Young Women organizations meet at the meetinghouse once a week, where the youth participate in activities. At the start of 2020, the church implemented a new initiative for children and youth worldwide, which replaced all other church youth programs.
In LDS theology, a temple is considered to be a holy building, dedicated as a “House of the Lord” and held as more sacred than a typical meetinghouse or chapel. In temples, church members participate in ceremonies that are considered the most sacred in the church, including marriage, and an endowment ceremony that includes a washing and anointing, receiving a temple garment, and making covenants with God. Baptisms for the dead are performed in the temples as well.
In order to perform ordinances in temples on behalf of deceased family members, the church emphasizes genealogical research, and encourages its lay members to participate in genealogy.It operates FamilySearch, the largest genealogical organization in the world.
Are There Problems Within Mormonism
Every church has it problems and Mormonism is not alone. Several years ago, I was attending a General Conference of the Church in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, when I heard President Benson, the President of our church at the time, say that the condemnation the Lord had placed on the Church had not been lifted, as he quoted from Doctrine & Covenants Section 84:
Today we are seeing the effects of that condemnation as people fall into the clutches of unbelief, vanity, and sin, and do not know the voice of the Savior. Also, many leave the Church because of so much conflicting information, which dashes their trust in a consistent theology. Let us look deeper. The Book of Mormon is basic to our religion. The fundamental purpose of the Book of Mormon is to bring people to Christ and help prepare for His glorious return so that we are not under the bondage of sin and know the voice of the Savior. 51 For whoso cometh not unto me is under the bondage of sin. The Book of Mormon, as a second witness with the Bible, is designed to help us get out from under that bondage and receive His mercy and grace. This is fundamental to Mormon theology.

Leaving The Mormon Church
I was once a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as Mormons or LDS. This is my story of how I became a member and why I decided to leave the church. Unlike the majority of Latter Day Saints, I had no family or friends that were Mormon , but became interested in it because of a man I was dating at that time, and the strong character traits I saw in him, which he attributed to his Mormon religious upbringing. I also knew that Donny and Marie were LDS. Other than that, I knew nothing about this church..
I expressed an interest, and the man I was dating quickly gave my name to the Latter Day Saints missionaries. These young men or women, usually age 18-20, leave home to go on their mission right after high school. They receive no pay or support from the LDS church, but live on the money that their family and donations from friends are able to provide. Most are on very limited incomes. I was immediately impressed by their dedication to the LDS church. I later learned that going on a mission for two years is expected of most young LDS men, and they are taught to plan for it from a very young age. The man I was dating had also gone on a LDS mission, but he said the main reason was his family and church members expected it of him.
What Does It Mean To Be Disfellowshipped From The Lds Church
Someone who has been disfellowshipped is still a member of the Church, and they are encouraged to attend meetings, though in those settings they are not permitted to pray, teach, take the sacrament, attend the temple or give sermons in public settings. Men are not able to perform priesthood duties.

Reasons To Leave The Mormon Church Even If It Is True
Recently an article entitled 21 Reasons it Doesnt Matter if the Church is True came out of a popular Mormon website. It lists several reasons, regardless of the truth, that someone might want to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In my opinion, this is mind boggling. The primary reason to join the church, one would think, would be because it is true. While I was serving my mission in Anaheim, California I never told people they should join because we have great casseroles or a famous choir. You know why? Because if the LDS Church is false, none of those things matter! If Mormonism is not true, it is a fraudulent version of Christianity and an enormous sham.
So without further ado, here is my list of 21 reasons leaving the Mormon Church might be a great idea, even if it is true.
1) Formal DressIt takes 20% longer to get ready for Mormon church. maybe. Probably. Especially when you factor in all the kids. And really, who wants to be sitting in church with a tie thats choking you to death the whole time and those starchy, formal clothes? Maybe God doesnt care what we look like on the outside as much as he looks on the heart.
2) Formal PrayersWho wants to be spoken to in thees and thous? Someone whos not very personable, thats who. In LDS Church literature about prayer, it is often explained that thees and thous are used in prayer because they used to be informal. Well, guess what people? Not anymore! Get with the times!

What Are Some Of The Causes Of Discontent
She recently shared with me the details of why she left the Church. I felt the sincerity of her heart as she shared how hard that decision came. I am deeply grateful she was willing to openly share these feelings with me.
She sent me the link to the book, CES Letter, by Jeremy T. Runnells that she suggested I read giving some of the reasons why she had left the Church. CES stands for the Church Education System, and he had reached out to them for answers. I downloaded the book and went through it in quite a bit of detail, as he explains why he left the Church because they couldnt, answer my concerns and questions.
As I went through the book, I found many miss leading quotes and misinformation. Unfortunately, many of them were from BYU professors and Church intellectuals that I knew were wrong from my personal research. A lot of people are leaving the Church because of these confusing and contradictory statements. For example, Jeremy says there are 100,000 changes in the Book of Mormon since it was first published. This is incredibly misleading. I have a copy of the original and have read it, and was thrilled with the consistency with the current edition.
How Do You Get Out Of The Mormon Church
There are websites that provide instructions for Mormons to submit their own letters many former Mormons in the subreddit r/exmormon have had success doing so. A spokesman for the Church named Daniel Woodruff stated that writing a letter to ones bishop with their request to leave the Church is the easiest way for a person to remove their name from Church records.
