Unique Blend Of Romanesque

The Basilica is unique in the world. It has a unique blend of Romanesque-Byzantine architecture.

On one side, Romanesque architecture is characterized by its massive size, robust piers, thick walls, beautiful arches, and vaults. In contrast, we can notice Byzantine architecture for its most distinctive feature, the dome. The circular dome should be placed over a rectangular room to be considered Byzantine architecture.

So, this architectural richness and opulence are what make the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC inimitable.

Magnificent Papal Chair Designed For Pope Francis Visit In 2015

Papal Chair Designed for Pope Francis. Built By Deacon Dave Cahoon

In the image, you can see the chair designed for Pope Francis. He sat here while giving the mass during his visit to the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC in September 2015.

Students of the Catholic University of America designed the Papal chair. But it was Deacon Dave Cahoon that took the challenge to build it. It took him thousands of hours to make and join the 16 pieces of the Papal chair.

After all, we know that making a chair for the most prominent person in the Catholic Church is a task that should be taken seriously.

Pope Francis was happy for all the gifts and unique furniture he got during his visit to the National Shrine.
