What Is The Purpose Of The Bible

The Bible: Fiction or Non-Fiction

The Bibles purpose is twofold. The first is to show us all have broken Gods Law. James 2:10 declares, For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it . Gods Law reveals how all people have sinned against God and are deserving of the fullness of His judgment.

Is The Bible A Work Of Fiction

Dan WarneThursday, 6 May 21

Maybe youve heard the saying that you dont need to defend the Bible any more than you need to defend a lionjust let it out of the cage! While its true that the Bible is Gods word and that it can stand its ground independently of our arguments in its defense, intellectual honesty demands that we take claims made against the Bible seriously.

One common claim made against the Bible is that its a work of fiction. Someone has even made the bold assertion that God is the most unpleasant character in all fiction. This claim sets high stakes. If the Bible is nothing more than another work of fiction, then the most it can offer is inspiring food for thought. But far worse, if the Bible claims to be historical yet proves itself inaccurate, then it misrepresents itself and is not to be trusted!

So its important to answer such a claim and not to dismiss it outrightis the Bible a work of fiction? Here are three ways to respond to this claim:

Response #1: The Bible Positions Itself as Historical

The first words of the Bible position it as a grand historical narrative: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth . Historical narrative makes up a large swath of the Old Testamentbooks such as 12 Kings and 12 Chronicles present concise annals of the two Hebrew Kingdoms, Israel and Judah, often in painstaking historical detail!

Response #2: Old Testament Evidence of Historicity

Response #3: New Testament Evidence of Historicity

Bible Fiction Or Non Fiction

22 Fiction, Non

So, as an atheist I consider the bible to be fiction – a collection of stories,However according to library cataloguing rules it’s non fiction, and i’m not sure if this is accurate or bizarre. What do religious folk think? Which side of the fence are you on? Genuinely baffled.

If you research the history and genealogy featured in both the old and new testament I think you will find the events to be chronologically accurate. Non fiction

Ok. If history backs it up I can probably accept that!

I don’t think the bible is chronologically accurate. It puts the creation of the earth and the first human at about 6000 years ago and it’s obviously closer to 7000

I suppose my surprise is that my belief is that the bible is all a little fabricated, me going from the ‘scientific’ or universal view. Library classification shouldn’t be based on religion, I haven’t looked, bit i’m guessing all other religious texts are also non-fiction, and they can’t all be true. I can live with it, what with my living in a christian society and all, but i’m just not sure it’s right.

Ah so the creation story comes down to interpretation. What about the flood? Did that happen how it was written?

The Bible And Archaeology

  • M.A., Anthropology, University of Iowa

An important step forward in scientific archaeological research, and a 19th-century outgrowth of the previous century’s Enlightenment was the search for the “truth” of the events written about in the ancient historical accounts of the past.

The main truth of the Bible, Torah, Koran, and the Buddhist sacred texts among many others is not a scientific one but a truth of faith and religion. The roots of the scientific study of archaeology are deeply planted in the establishment of the boundaries of that truth.

Myth or Real: The Bible is Nonfiction

At the end of yesterdays devotional, I referred to the scripture as Truth. But is it? Most Christians believe it is. After all, The Bible says so.

Using deductive reasoning, if the Bible is inspired by God , and if God is Truth then The Bible must be true.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Therefore, we Christians, by faith, believe it to be so. This is not a negative thing, in my opinion. Christians are not disillusioned or crazy, but perhaps some may be unaware of other proof that is available to them.

When youre talking with non-Bible believers, you cant quote scripture and really expect them to accept it, can you? And simply giving them the above passages will most likely not change their mind. After all, logically , The Bible cannot be true just because The Bible says so.

Just as Pauls letter to Timothy suggests, we as Christians, should study, so that we are able to answer these kinds of questions, and not be ashamed. In these situations, we need to be able to give a practical explanation of why The Bible is more than a fictional novel. So, lets find out how.

While we can look at multiple prophecies listed in Isaiah that were fulfilled in the New Testament , it seems that historical evidence would best demonstrate The Bibles reliability to a non-believer.

The Bible Is Not Fiction

The good news is that you can buy a Bible at Costco for $14.99.

The bad news is that you will find it under the fiction label at the Costco in Simi Valley, CA. The sticker on the back says fiction along with the price. Thats what Costco would have us believe.

I would understand if they disagree with the Gospel message found in the Bible, if they do not agree with the theology found there, and if they do not believe in God. But by definition the Bible is not a work of fiction. Fiction is nothing more than imaginative writing which is not based in reality.

The Old Testament contains a code of living, the Law which we believe was given to Moses from God. It is a how to live guide that points forward to Christ. It also contains songs, poetry, detailed historical accounts, artistic lamentations, prophecies, and many more types of non-fictional writing.

The New Testament contains the three synoptic gospels giving a somewhat parallel account from different perspectives on what Jesus said and did in His ministry. The Gospel of John is a detailed account focusing on the divinity of Jesus Christ.

The book of Acts is detailed historical account of the way the Holy Spirit worked in the early church. Many of Pauls epistles are elaborate commentaries on the Old Testament and theological discussions on various subjects like human depravity, grace, faith, eschatology, etc.

Many of the other epistles contain exhortations and encouragements written to Asia Minor churches.

Similarities To Other Stories

The similarities between the stories and characters in the Bible and those from previous mythologies are both undeniable and well-documented. This would be obvious if it werent for early indoctrination of these beliefs into children, which usually makes them unassailable as adults.

In this short piece Ill attempt to show extraordinary similarities with regard to two of the most important Biblical narratives: the Genesis story and the character of Jesus Christ.

How Historical Is The Bible

the historical books of the Old Testament are as accurate historical documents as any that we have from antiquity and are in fact more accurate than many of the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, or Greek histories. These Biblical records can be and are used as are other ancient documents in archaeological work.

The Book Of Genesiss Flood Story Mirrors The Epic Of Gilgamesh From Hundreds Of Years Earlier

Here are a number of elements that both Gilgamesh and the flood story in Genesis share:

  • God decided to send a worldwide flood. This would drown men, women, children, babies and infants, as well as eliminate all of the land animals and birds.
  • God knew of one righteous man, Ut-Napishtim or Noah.
  • God ordered the hero to build a multi-story wooden ark , and the hero initially complained about the assignment to build the boat.
  • The ark would have many compartments, a single door, be sealed with pitch and would house two of every animal species.
  • A great rain covered the land with water.
  • The ark landed on a mountain in the Middle East.
  • The first two birds returned to the ark. The third bird apparently found dry land because it did not return.
  • The hero and his family left the ark, ritually killed an animal, offered it as a sacrifice.
  • The Babylonian gods seemed genuinely sorry for the genocide that they had created. The God of Noah appears to have regretted his actions as well, because he promised never to do it again.
  • Keep in mind the level of detail in these similarities. Its not a matter of just a flood, but specific details: three birds sent out, resisting the call to build the ark, and a single man being chosen by God to build the ark. Then consider that the first story came from Babylon hundreds of years before the Bible was even written.

Is Being Fiction Same With Being Unreal

Fiction refers to something unreal, something imaginative, fantastic. It’s not necessarily a lie, but simply a fact, an action or a story that is not true. So non fiction, of course, is something opposite to fiction, something opposite to an unreal story. Non fiction is actually reality, true facts.

Let’s be fair. If we expect writings about atheism and science to be in the nonfiction section, we can’t really complain if the bible goes there as well. If you go down the path of ‘whatever I think is incorrect can’t go in the nonfiction section’ what you have isn’t intellectualism, or scientific thinking. What you have is authoritarian censorship, and supporting it is exactly the kind of behaviour that will validate the fears of the religious that atheists are arrogant and immoral.Let there be competition over ideas. If atheism is the correct philosophy, then there shouldn’t need be such censorship for people to follow it- it’s superiority as a position should make it more convincing. And in the meantime, the debate brings up various interesting philosophical ideas by consequence for us all to think over.

What Kind Of Stories Are In The Bible

The Bible contains narrative throughout most of its books. These report accounts or stories of events or people as they encounter God, sin against each other or live out their lives. It records historical accounts of events as well as providing descriptions of what is happening in particular scenes. Narrative is relatively straight forward to read.

If The God Of The Bible Exists Then

If the God of the Bible exists, then he exists in a way that is different from the universe. After all, he created it. I am writing this article , and I exist differently than it does. The article depends on my existencenot me on its existence. Doing an experiment on the word patterns and repeatability of style would not prove that theres an actual person named Matt Slick who wrote it. Is there an experiment that can determine my existence based upon what is found in an article? Or, will the subjectivity of the examiner conclude that Matt Slick does not exist even though the article says it is written by me? One may agree Im real where another one may not. Again, we are talking about subjectivity because how a person interprets evidence is subject to that persons worldview and subjective preferences.

If the God of the Bible exists, then he is independent of the universe, transcendent, and answers to no one. Therefore, unless an experiment can be devised based on materialistic principles that conclusively prove theres a non-material transcendent being outside the universe , then we are left with the conclusion that the only way to know God exists is if he discloses himself.

Testing The Authenticity Of A Manuscript

    Reviews for fiction and non

There are two standard tests exist by which all historical documents can be vetted.

The first test is called a historiography. The second is the external evidence test. There, scholars ask, Is there external evidence totally apart from the book under investigation that confirms its inner testimony or accuracy?

Wed start our testing by examining the paper and ink used to record the manuscript. Then wed study its timeline how far the manuscript is removed from the original . Next we would determine the manuscripts approximate date. We could use clues such as ink color, letter size, punctuation, ornamentation, and even text division.

Want to know what scholars find when they examine the Bibles timeline? That they can date the earliest version of the written New Testament to within fifty years of Christs death!

You might be thinking thats a long gap, but lets put the gap into perspective. The closest version we have of all other non-biblical historical documents is closer to hundreds of years. There is a 50-year gap between the New Testament and the autographa but a 500-year gap with the Iliad!

Another benchmark scholars consider: how many copies of the original text exist? The more copies available to review, the easier it is to reconstruct the original document. Again, lets compare the number of manuscripts of literature of antiquity.

The evidence for New Testament writings is so much greater than the evidence for writings of other classical authors.
