Who Decided What Order The Books Would Go In And Why

Ultimately it was God through His people who decided what books would be included in His Holy Word, the Bible. Jewish rabbis and scholars selected the first books, and later the early Christians did. These books, called the canon, are all considered to have been divinely inspired by God and therefore, as the apostle Paul explained to his mentee, Timothy, God-breathed .

The Old Testament had already been compiled before Jesus was born in human form. As for the New Testament, The Muratorian Canon, from around AD 200, is the earliest list of texts resembling the New Testament. Before that, there was no actual New Testament but rather a group of books considered to be of greater or lesser value than others. In the 5th century, however, all the different Christian churches came to a basic agreement, assembled by St. Jerome, on the biblical canon.

Most believe the Bible isnt arranged in chronological order simply because the Bible wasnt written in one sitting, from start to finish. Many different writers over many, many centuries contributed to the Bible, each one of them inspired by God.

Instead of the chronological grouping, those who compiled and arranged the first Bibles presumably decided a categorical grouping would be more practical or beneficial to Gods people.

Book: Acts Of The Apostles

Considering the type of literature, this is the only historical book in the New Testament. It is an anonymous book, but all known evidence from the early church, dating back to the second century, points to Luke as the author of the book of Acts. Few scholars question this tradition. Luke was a physician , which indicates he was well-educated, and a companion of the apostle Paul . Based on the we passages in Acts , where the author includes himself in the narrative, scholars conclude that he was an associate of Paul, which is another argument in favor of Lukes authorship.

When Written: The possible dates for the writing of this book range from A.D. 62, when the last event recorded took place, to the middle of the second century, which is the date of the first known mention of the book.

Most scholars are in favor of an early writing, around A.D. 62, because the book doesnt mention Pauls martyrdom or the severe persecution that begun under the emperor Nero in A.D. 64.

Books Of The Bible List

Pronouncing books of the bible 1

The 66 books of the Bible list can be misleading if you dont know much about Bible history.

The Bible has different books because each book really is a separate document all on its own, written at various points in time throughout history.

Although we now have the Bible between two covers, it did not start out that. One person did not sit down and write all these books.

This is why Bible study is so very vast and interesting. In this post, we will explore the 66 books of the Bible, how they are organized, their authors and meaning.

Book: Song Of Songs Or Song Of Solomon

Books of the Bible, Vinyl Wall Decal, Sunday School, Childrens Church ...

The first verse tells us that Solomon either wrote it, it belonged to him, or it was written about him . The Bible tells us that Solomon wrote 1,005 songs , so it is reasonable to consider him the author of this book.

Some scholars question Solomons authorship and attribute it to an unknown author in the postexilic period, but there isnt strong evidence to support their claims.

When Written: If Solomon is indeed the author, then it was written around 950 B.C. If not, critics claim it was written in the fifth century B.C.

The Hebrew Scriptures & The Old Testament

Order of Books of the King James Bible

The first books in the Christian bible are the holy books of the Jewish faith, collected in the Tanakh. “Tanakh” is an acronym of the three major division of the Hebrew holy book–the Torah , Nevi’im , and Ketuvim . In Christian traditions these books are called “the Old Testament.” The Jewish faith also adheres to the teachings in the Talmud, rabbinical commentaries on the Tanakh unlike the Tanakh, Christian scripture does not recognize the Talmud.

Different Christian traditions acknowledge different books of the Bible as canonical. The Tanakh includes only 24 books, while mainline Protestant bibles inclue 39*, Catholics include 46, and Eastern Orthodox groups include 49. The books included in some bibles and not others are called Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical this means either that they are not canon, or that they are less canonical than primary canon.

*Protestant bibles do not include more material than Hebrew bibles, but they divide the book of the 12 minor prophets into 12 different books, as well as dividing the book of Ezra-Nehemiah into the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, and the book of Chronicles into 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles. All Christian bibles, however, are ordered differently than the Tanakh.

Number Of Chapters In Each Of The 66 Books With A List Of The Books In Order From Mostchapters To The Least Number Of Chapters

The chart below is a list of all 66 canonical books of the Bible along with the number ofchapters in each book. Most of the books were written for a group of readers. Those which werewritten to specific individuals are identified with asterisk. This list of Bible books has them inthe order in which they appear in Bibles today. The order is more in terms of subject matter –history, wisdom literature, prophecy, gospel accounts, letters and so on — than in thechronological order in which they were written.

For example, Bible scholars say Mark was likely the first Gospel account to be written. However, Matthew is the first book of the New Testament, likely because it makes morereferences to the Old Testament than any of the other three Gospel accounts. Scholars alsothink1Thessalonians was the first of Paul’s letters or epistles to be written. However, Romans thefirst book in the section containing his letters to churches and individuals. The same kind ofthing occurs in the Old Testament. Esther, for instance, is about events during the Babylonianexile while books like Psalms and Isaiah, which were written prior to the Exile, appear after theEsther’s story in Bibles.
