Queen Of All Saints St Mary The Virgin

Arguably the most important Saint of all. Mary the virgin mother of Jesus Christ is said to have been born without the burden of sin. Like her son, she to has been exalted by the divine grace, and stationed above all angels and men.

The life of Mary and her role in humanities salvation, was foretold in the Old Testament. The events of her life are documented in the New Testament, and while the last of her years on earth remain undocumented, it is believed that she either went to Ephesus, or remained in Jerusalem, before she was assumed into heaven body and soul.

The Virgin Mary is associated with may good things, most importantly, Motherhood. While she may not be our mother in the physical sense, she is considered to be the spiritual mother of us all. Through her, our spiritual lives are birthed and nurtured. From baptism, till death, she stands by our side, guiding us along the path of the Lord.

St Francis Of Assisi Patron Saint Of Animals

Born Giovanni in the 12th century, St. Francis of Assisi was a wealthy young man on his way to fight in a war when God came to him in a vision. After that moment, he devoted his life to teaching and preaching about God while leading a life of poverty. He spearheaded a revival in the Catholic faith that gave birth to three new Catholic religious orders:

• The Third Order of Saint Francis
• The womens Order of St. Clare
• The Order of Friars Minor

One of St. Franciss most well-known attributes is his love for animals. In fact, most artistic depictions of him include birds and mammals. Catholics invoke St. Francis of Assisis intercession for blessings toward animals and the environment, and for protection against fires.

Missionary and founder of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

Théodore Guérin was born October 2nd, 1784 in Etables, France. At the age of ten, she received her First Holy Communion and announced to the parish priest that she would one day be a nun. At the age of 25, she fulfilled this statement, entering the order of the Sisters of Providence of Ruillé-sur-Loir, whose mission it was to educate children and to care for the poor, sick and dying. While serving at the convent, Théodore was asked to lead a small band of missionary sisters to Indiana in the United States of America. When the sisters arrived, there was only a log cabin with a porch that served as a chapel. Though her health was suffering, Théodore fell to this new task with a will. By the time she died in 1856, MotherThéodore had opened schools in Illinois and throughout Indiana. The sisters were well-established and respected. Through illness, poverty and all manner of unwelcomingcircumstances, she trusted in Gods providence and lived as a model of belief in his mercy. She was canonized in 2006, and is known as the patron saint of Indianapolis.

St Thomas Aquinas Patron Saint Of Educators Students And Learning

St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the most intellectually gifted individuals in this list of saints and their virtues. History remembers him for his intricate, beautiful writings, as well as his exemplary virtuous life that Catholics around the world seek to emulate and learn from. St. Thomas was born into a wealthy family in Italy, but he chose to live a life of chastity, obedience and poverty instead. He felt God was calling him to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

St Joseph Patron Saint Of Fathers Workers And A Holy And Happy Death

St. Joseph is well-known in Catholic Tradition for his status as the husband of the Virgin Mary and earthly father to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. St. Joseph displayed exceptional dedication, love, humility and trust in God in both of these relationships, from the moment God commanded him to take Mary as his wife to his fostering and raising of Jesus during his formative years.

In Matthew 13:55, we see Jesus referred to as the carpenters son upon returning to his hometown. And although many of Jesus relatives are listed in this passage, Joseph goes unmentioned. This silence leads many to believe that Joseph died before Jesus began his public ministry. Joseph would have died surrounded by Jesus Christ and Mary, the holiest and happiest death indeed.

St. Josephs title as the carpenter also reveals a great deal about who he was during his life. He was a hard worker, using his hands to fashion wood for his clients. He would have put in work and effort to provide for Mary and Jesus. For this reason, St. Joseph is also revered as the patron saint of fathers and workers. These individuals can look to St. Joseph for inspiration to trust God and honor Him through manual labor.

St Mary The Virgin The Mother Of Jesus

Perhaps the most famous Catholic saint, Mary was blessed by God to carry and give birth to His Son, Jesus Christ. She is the only human, besides Jesus, to ever be born without Original Sin, and she remained blameless her entire life. It was through St. Marys faithful obedience that Gods Son was able to enter the world and change the course of history forever.

In Luke 1:28, the angel Gabriel refers to Mary as favored one and tells her that the Lord is with her. What a blessing it must have been to be Mary at that moment, learning of the incredible duty God had chosen her to fulfill. Together, she and Jesus would have experienced many moments in life and shared the joy of being mother and son.

When Jesus is dying on the cross in John 19:26-27, he reveals his love for his mother Mary. Jesus tells the disciple whom he loved, St. John, to take care of his mother after his death. The Bible says John cared for Mary in his own home from that day forward. Today, Catholics continue to give Mary the highest honor and seek her blessings in many moments of life.

St Elizabeth Ann Seton

Mother Seton is the first American born saint of the Catholic Church. Although she was born into a wealthy family in New York, she eschewed her familys riches and lived a simple life. She married her husband William, and the young couple spent the early years of their marriage caring for Williams siblings after Williams father died.

After Williams health began to fail, they moved to Italy, hoping to improve Williams health and growing their shipping business. While in Italy, William died, leaving ELizabeth a widow.

While in Italy, she had made many Catholic friends. She converted to Catholicism when she returned to the States. She created the model for the parochial school system here in the US, establishing the first free Catholic school for girls. Later, she went on to establish a religious community in the Sisters of Charity of St Joseph.

As a teacher, shes a saint I call upon often when my little students are challenging my patience.

Ss Felicity And Perpetua

Living during the the early persecution of the Church in Africa by the Emperor Severus, Perpetua was a young noblewoman nursing a newborn and Felicity was her slave.

As two of the earliest Roman martyrs, the pair are honoured together for their heroism in the face of barbarism. The saints refused to apostatize their Christian faith despite being sentenced to death for it. Felicity gave birth to her daughter just moments before her execution during a celebration games in honor of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus birthday.

St Damian Of Alexandria

Born in Syria, Damian was drawn to asceticism and spent sixteen years as a monk in the Egyptian desert of Scete, later becoming ordained in the monastery of St. John the Short. He became well known for his kindness and obedience as he served the Pope Peter IV of Alexandria, prolifically writing many theological discourses and epistles. He also fought against the heresies of tritheism and Chaldcedonianism . St. Damian is highly honored in the Coptic Christian Church, where they celebrate his feast in April. Roman Catholics celebrate his feast day on February 12.

St Damien De Veuster Of Molokai Sscc

Missionary to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii

St. Damien of Molokai was born in Belgium in 1840 to a poor farmer and his wife. At the age of 13, he quit school to help his parents on the farm when he was nineteen, he entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Damien’s older brother, Pamphile, was also a priest in this congregation, and had offered his service to the care of the lepers on the Island of Molokai. When he fell ill and couldn’t go to the mission, Damien volunteered to take his place. The saint offered to stay in the leper colony permanently – he built schools, churches, hospitals and coffins. He was later joined in his work by the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, led by St. Marianne Cope. St. Damien contracted the disease himself, but continued to serve the mission until his death in 1889 .

Changes To The Process

In the early 70s, Pope Paul VI revised the canon of the saints to exclude those whose historical existence could not be verified. For example, St. Christopher, the protector of travelers, was removed, although many Catholics still have a St. Christopher medal in their automobiles.

In 1983, John Paul II, who would become a saint himself, changed the waiting period from 50 to five years after the candidates death. He also reduced the role of the devils advocate.

These changes led to criticism that the Vatican had become a saints factory. This quicker process, however, has not reduced the six-figure costs necessary for those who support the cause to fund an investigation and hire a postulator.

St Gertrude The Great

From the age of four, Gertrude was educated at the monastery of St. Mary in Helfta. It is not clear if she was offered to the church as a child oblate by devout parents. Or if she was in fact an orphan, as implied in her writings. Remains debatable among many scholars even to this day.

An avid lover of the written word, Gertrude penned many books in her lifetime. Sadly only a few remain today with many being lost throughout the ages. Up until 1281, she was heavily focused on studying and writing on topics of secular knowledge. That was until at the age of 25, when she experienced her first vision. A vision that fundamentally changed her life, and passions. Studying scripture and theology became her priority, as she devoted herself to personal prayer and meditation.

With the shift in her studies, came a change in not only what she wrote about, but also the way in which she would write. Gertrude began writing spiritual treatises and became one of the great mystics of the 13th century. As her visions continued throughout her life, she began to practice nuptial mysticism. A form of devotion that allowed her to become a bride of Christ.

Blessed Father Stanley Rother

An Oklahoma farm boy, Father Stanley Francis Rother was born March 27, 1935, in Okarche, Oklahoma. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa in 1963, he served in the diocese’s Guatemala mission for fourteen years. He served the native Tzutuhil tribe, who are decedents of the Mayans. In order to serve his people, Fr. Rother learned both Spanish and the Tzutuhil language. Surrounded by extreme poverty, Fr. Rother ministered to his parishioners in their homes, eating with them, visiting the sick, aiding with medical problems and helping farm. While he served in Guatemala, a civil war raged between the militarist government forces and the guerillas. During this, conflict hundreds of thousands of Catholics were killed due to the Church’s insistence on helping people. Eventually, Fr. Rother was targeted. For his safety, Fr. Rother returned to Oklahoma. Determined to give his life completely to his people, he stated that “the shepherd cannot run.” Returning to Santiago Atitlan, he continued to minister to his people. Within days of his return, three men entered the rectory and executed Fr. Rother. Seeking justice in the midst of a protracted civil war, Fr. Rother fought courageously for the well-being of his people.
