There Are Dozens Of Translations Of The Bible Into English None Of Which Are Perfect

The NABRE, St Joseph Edition

So, youve decided to make an extra effort and finally read the Bible. Perhaps you have an old family Bible in the house, but you feel like you need a fresh copy, a better translation, something you can read and understand. You take a trip to the local Barnes and Noble or a Catholic bookstore, and the clerk directs you to the Bible section.

I didnt know there were so many different versions, you might think to yourself. Does it matter which one I buy? Which one is best for a Catholic like myself? This one looks good, but is it worth it to pay more for it?

The choice can be daunting. At Barnes and Nobles website, a search for Bible, narrowed down to hardcover versions, yields over 4,700 results.

If the Bible might be considered a guide to life, one might actually need a roadmap to find the version most suitable for the average pilgrim.

According to some Catholic scholars and teachers, there is no one best Bible for Catholics, but several versions are suitable. Often, it depends on the individual, his background in Bible reading and study, and the way he wishes to use the Good Book.

The New American Bible was first published in 1970 and is the basis for the readings at Mass.

Good News Translation Catholic Edition

The Good News Translation is a loosely translated, simplified language, multi-named Bible from the American Bible Society , currently in its second edition, published in 1992. The 1992 revision focused on adopting gender-neutral language. From its inception, the translation had abandoned traditional Biblical vocabulary in favor of what the editors deem everyday English: language common to both native speakers and those for whom English is an adopted tongue. Essentially, it is geared toward those with middle school level reading skills and vocabulary. This makes for easy reading, but it tends to flatten Biblical doctrines, and can be quite pedestrian as literature. The second edition has been approved for personal use by the USCCB, but the Catholic Edition is merely a re-ordered canon of the same GNT content a weak, dynamic equivalence translation with sparse annotation.

Contemporary English Version Catholic Edition

The Contemporary English Version is another loosely translated, limited vocabulary, common language translation from the American Bible Society, this one aiming at a third grade reading level. Aside from replacing terms with the by now almost ubiquitous genderless terminology, the translation eliminates words like covenant, salvation, grace, justification, and other fundamental Biblical ideas.

What Is The Bible

God speaks to us in many ways. One way God speaks to us is through the Bible. The Bible is the most important book in Christian life because it is Gods message, or revelation. The Bible is the story of Gods promise to care for us, especially through his Son, Jesus. At Mass we hear stories from the Bible. We can also read the Bible on our own. < Read more from Loyola Press>

Preface Of The 1963 Edition

Inspired by the Divine Spirit, the Sacred Writers composed these books which God, in His paternal charity toward the human race, deigned to bestow on them for teaching, for reproving, for correcting, for instructing in justice that the man of God may be perfect, equipped for every good work . This heaven-sent treasure Holy Church considers as the most precious source of doctrine on faith and morals. No wonder therefore that, as she received it intact from the hands of the Apostles, she has kept it with all care, defended it from every false and perverse interpretation, and used it diligently as an instrument for securing the eternal salvation of souls .

In conformity with the spirit of this encyclical of Pope Pius XII, and with the encouragement of His Excellency the Apostolic Delegate to the United States, the Episcopal Committee of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine requested members of the Catholic Biblical Association of America to translate the Sacred Scriptures from the original languages or from the oldest extant form of the text, and to present the sense of the Biblical text in as correct a form as possible.

Bible Maps Are The Key To Knowing Where Salvation History Occurred And Why It Matters

The places and locations of Scripture are important because they, too, tell a story. In fact, theyre so important that some scholars have referred to biblical geography as the fifth gospel.

If you want to know this fifth gospel, we recommend using Then & Now Bible Maps. These maps show where major biblical events took place , and have transparent overlays that show where those places are today . to watch Jeff Cavins demonstration on how to use your maps.

Preface To The Revised New American Bible Old Testament

The first step in the genesis of the New American Bible was taken in 1936 when His Excellency, the Most Reverend Edwin V. OHara, D.D., chairman of the Episcopal Committee of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, invited a group of Catholic Scripture scholars to plan for a revised edition of the Challoner-Rheims New Testament, primarily on the basis of the Vulgate the plans soon expanded to include the revision of the Old Testament. Archbishop OHaras initiative resulted in the formation of the Catholic Biblical Association, whose principal activity in its early years was this work of revision and translation. In 1943 His Holiness Pope Pius XII issued the encyclical Divino afflante spiritu, which encouraged Scripture scholars to translate the Scriptures from the original languages. He wrote: We ought to explain the original text which was written by the inspired author himself and has more authority and greater weight than any, even the very best, translation whether ancient or modern. This can be done all the more easily and fruitfully if to the knowledge of languages be joined a real skill in literary criticism of the same text. Although at this point work on almost twenty of the Old Testament books was completed or near completion, that work was abandoned and the new project of translating from the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic was undertaken.

New American Bible Revised Edition

The New American Bible is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops , and is the de facto standard Bible translation for the Catholic Church in America. Originally published in 1970, it was incorporated into the new Lectionary for Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, and other liturgical rites revised under the Vatican II reforms, and is the basis for the only approved liturgical text in the USA and the Philippines today.

The text of the NAB has been completely revised since 1970, and the liturgical books have not entirely kept up with the changes, but the current NAB version does basically align with the Gospels and other New Testament readings proclaimed at Mass within the United States , readings which come from a Lectionary published in 1998 . Serious Catholics in these two countries would do well to have a copy of the NAB editions printed between 1987 and 2010 would best reflect the texts of the current Lectionaries.

Two other Bibles published in America could easily be confused with the New American Bible:

Th Century Catholic Translations From Greek & Hebrew

Jerusalem Bible

Published in 1966, the Jerusalem Bible is a dynamic equivalence translation that closely follows its French predecessor: La Bible de Jerusalem. Its copious, well-regarded notes were translated directly from the French edition. The translation has been highly regarded for the clearness of its English, though it is more interpretive than many other translations, and like all dynamic translations, sometimes flattens the text excessively. The JB is notable for the use of Yahweh as an attempted transliteration of the Divine Name as recorded in the Hebrew .

Not widely used in America these days, the JB is still used across the pond. Englands Catholic Truth Society publishes a print edition containing the text of the Jerusalem Bible, but with the original Grail Psalms replacing the JB Psalms. The CTS edition also replaces the word Yahweh in the JB text with the Lord, in compliance with 21st century liturgical norms. This CTS edition reflects the official liturgical versions currently used in several English-speaking countries, although those are being phased out in preference for Lectionaries based on newer translations, such as the RNJB or the ESV-CE. Unfortunately, the CTS edition also replaces the original JB annotations, which were arguably its outstanding feature, with a significantly reduced set.

About The American Standard Version

The American Standard Version, also known as the Standard American Edition, Revised Version, is a revised version of the KJV. It was completed in 1885 and newly edited by the American Revision Committee in 1901.

The Revised Version, Standard American Edition of the Bible, more commonly known as the American Standard Version , is a revision of the King James Version and was released in 1901. It was originally best known by its full name, but soon came to have other names, such as the American Revised Version, the American Standard Revision, the American Standard Revised Bible, and the American Standard Edition. By the time its copyright was renewed in 1929, it had finally come to be known by its present name, the American Standard Version. Because of its prominence in seminaries, however, it was sometimes simply called the “Standard Bible”.The ASV was the basis of several later Bible revisions. They were the Revised Standard Version , the Amplified Bible , the New American Standard Bible , and the Recovery Version . The ASV was also the basis for the World English Bible and Kenneth N. Taylor’s Bible paraphrase, The Living Bible, which was published in 1971.The ASV is now considered antiquated, and rare antique editions are hard to find.Special thanks to The Lockman Foundation for permission to use the New American Standard Bible

The American Standard Version is in the public domain.
