STONECREST, GANew Birth Missionary Baptist Church is helping thousands of area students start the school year on the right foot its annual back-to-school event on Aug. 13. Registration is underway now.
Senior Pastor Jamal H. Bryant and the New Birth congregation have expanded this
years outreach to include the distribution of 5,000 brand-new pairs of shoes for school-aged students. Registration is required for all participants.
In DeKalb County, where New Birth is located, nearly 95,000 students are registered in the school district with 48.2% eligible to receive free or reduced lunch, according to a 2021 Dekalb County School District report.
We have been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of our congregation and the community, but we are still urging partners and those looking to help impact the lives of students and families this school year to donate new shoes today, said Bryant. Families have so much on their plates as they prepare their young ones to head back to school. Skyrocketing gas prices, food costs and living expenses have increased the financial burden faced by countless families. The added expense of buying shoes as students prepare to return to school in-person has become an increased stress for parents.

New Birth Reopening Church For In
New Birth Missionary Baptist Church returning to in-person worship
Most of the church pastor’s three years of services have been virtual. They got creative with their services, including hitting to road for iconic backdrops.
STONECREST, Ga. – New Birth pastor Dr. Jamal Bryant celebrated his third anniversary as lead pastor. For two of those three years he has delivered sermons virtually thanks to COVID. Since March 2020, New Births sanctuary in Stonecrest has been empty.
“We thought it was going to be six weeks, thought maybe a month. Okay everybody well see you Memorial Day weekend,” says Dr. Bryant, recalling when the country went into lockdown.
“Then it was Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend. Then it was oh this is here! The difficult part was when do we open?! We knew we had to shut down. We shut down immediately.”
So like the rest of the world, New Birth went virtual and really flexed their creativity to make the Sunday morning online experience an impactful one.
“We did church from Air BNBs. We did church from the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma . We did church from museums. Wherever it is where you were mobile, you were able to worship. So it took the sanctity of the stained-glass windows and released it to the street corner,” he said.
Last year many churches resumed in-person worship, but not New Birth. It wasnt a move they were ready to make or could make with COVID disproportionately affecting the black community and their church family.
New Birth Missionary Baptist Church To Give Away Thousands Of New Shoes To Local Students
ATLANTA, Ga. – Thousands of metro Atlanta students will soon have new shoes for school and its all free, thanks to New Birth Missionary Baptist Churchs shoe distribution giveaway.
Friday night, volunteers prepared over 5,000 shoes to be picked out by students during their event Saturday.
The shoe distribution event will take place from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, August 13 at the churchs Family Life Center, 6400 Woodrow Rd.
Families have so much on their plates as they prepare their young ones to head back to school. Skyrocketing gas prices, food costs, and living expenses have increased the financial burden faced by countless families. The added expense of buying new shoes as students prepare to return to school in-person has become an increased stress for many parents. the Rev. Jamal Harrison Bryant, senior pastor, said in a release about the event.
Throughout the months of June and July, members of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church collect thousands of brand-new shoes to give students ahead of the school year in metro Atlanta.
According to a news release, the initiative was first launched in 2019. This is the first in-person shoe distribution event since the pandemic began.
