The Bible Story Of Noah’s Ark

Noah

This is a summary of the Biblical account of the flood and Noah’s ark. The story of Noah’s ark is one filled with faith, perseverance, and promise. Noah was a man who found great favor in God’s eyes. The entire population of mankind had become evil and wicked and God decided to bring a flood to the earth to destroy everyone but Noah and his family. God told Noah to prepare an ark big enough to hold one male and one female from every kind of animal and creature. This is why many pictures depicting Noah’s ark show animals coming two by two.

When it started raining, Noah brought his wife and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their wives onto the ark. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. After coming to rest on a mountain, Noah sent out a dove to find dry land but it returned. Seven days later he sent out another dove and it returned with an olive leaf, signaling that it was now safe to go onto land.

God promised to never destroy the earth with a flood again and He placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign of his promise. Read in the text below:

Where Did Noah Get The Wood For The Ark

During the building of the ark, Noah continued to preach righteousness and justice, especially when he was provoked by the presence of the curious and sarcastic people of iniquity who came to see his construction. But the most eloquent and resounding sermon was the very thing he had taken up. Gods long-suffering still waited for the awakening of repentance even while the ship was being built, but it was all in vain. God gave Noah more and more instructions on how to make the ark.

Noah made the ark with gopher wood, which he took from the nearby woods. Thats why it took so long to build the ship: 40 years. At the time of the completion of the ark, Noah was six hundred years old, and then, seeing no sign of humanitys recovery, the Lord commanded Noah to enter the ark with all his family and a set number of animals.

What We Can Learn From Noah

The story of Noah and the Flood is one of judgement and salvation of obedience and disobedience. In an era of overwhelming wickedness, Noah set himself apart by living righteously. Noah was likely mocked for building a giant boat when no flood was yet seen upon the earth but he did not worry about what other people thought. He simply responded to Gods commands with a willing heart and hands. God rewarded him for his righteousness and obedience, saving both him and his family from destruction.

The story of the Flood also demonstrates both the gravity of Gods justice and the promise of His salvation. Every sin we commit grieves God, and His justice demands judgement for that sin. Just as God provided salvation for Noah and his family when His judgement was brought upon the world, so also does God provide salvation for each of His followers through Christ.

This post is the sixth installment in the Basilicas Biblical Figures series, which highlights the stories of the individuals throughout the Scriptures who are portrayed in Americas Catholic Church. While some of them inspire us with their unwavering faithfulness, others serve as sober reminders of the consequences of sin. All of them have lessons to teach us about Christian living.

What Are Some Characteristics Of Noah

The story in the Bible that Noah saved his family and animals of every species from Gods wrath made Noah known among believers and other people of the world. In the Bible, Noahs ark is said to have arrived on Mount Ararat in Turkey after the flood devastated the planet. But Noah was saved by the righteousness of his soul, becoming the second Adam of humanity.

The following words will describe some characteristics of the prophet Noah:

Yet Noah was righteous but still with human nature and had sin in his blood. The fact that Noah got drunk may have been because of the influence that the people before the flood had on Noah. And the same is true today.

So this may have influenced Noahs followers, who disobeyed God. And about whom we read later in the biblical account, they became polytheists in just a few hundred years.

What Does God Promise Noah

Bible Stories Noah

The whole face of the earth was covered with water, and on this boundless sea alone, Noahs ark was borne, which contained within itself only the seed chosen for the development of new life on earth. In due time, the water receded. The ship came to rest on Mount Ararat.

God promised Noah that the earth would never again be drowned in flood.

Since Noah was a new beginner of humanity on earth, God repeated to him the blessing once given to society. To create a house and multiply to fill the world and then rule it.

Gods Promise Not To Flood The Earth Again

Then Noah built an altar and offered burnt offerings to the Lord on it. And God said, Never again will I curse the ground because of man or send a flood to destroy all living things, even though mankinds heart is evil from childhood. And God blessed Noah and his family saying, Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth .

Great Flood Stories Myths And Legends

Flood stories that differ from the historical account in the Bible are common worldwide, but many share elements common to the Bible account. As Noahs descendants spread throughout the earth, it seems that they retold the story of the Flood. In time, however, the story evidently became distorted into various forms. Consider some examples.

Greek legend: The man and woman who survive a flood are ordered to repopulate the earth by throwing stones behind their backs. The stones then become men and women.

Hindu legend: A man is warned by a fish that a flood will destroy mankind. The fish instructs the man to build a boat. The man survives the flood because the fish guides the boat to safety.

Babylonian legend: The man and woman who survive a flood are granted immortality and become gods.

Central American legend: A man, his wife, and their children survive a flood while all other men are turned into fish.

What Else Does The Bible Say About Noah

Noah is first mentioned in the Bible when his father Lamech predicted the upcoming destruction of the earth and Noahs role in restoring mankind: He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed. .

Noah had unwavering faith and godly fear to build an ark when God warned him about a flood he had not yet seen:

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith, he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith .

Noah is numbered as being amongst three of the most righteous men in the book of Ezekiel, alongside Job, and Daniel:

As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness .

The Better Version Of Noahs Ark

Bible Stories for Kids! Noah’s Ark (Episode 2)

This is an adapted excerpt from They Spoke of Me: How Jesus Unlocks the Old Testament.

The famous story of Noah and the flood fills Sunday school classes, kids books, and Christian art. The depictions are always the samea bunch of cute zoo animals on a boat captained by a jolly old man, sun shining overhead, clouds puffier than cotton candy. If you had no backstory, you might think Noah loaded up some exotic animals to tour the Atlantic Ocean.

Others think the flood is an ancient recounting of an angry God who arbitrarily hates people. Non-Christians are especially susceptible to this idea, though many Christians also assume the God of the Old Testament is like a petulant child with a magnifying glass, scorching us like ants out of sheer maniacal pleasure.

Both postures are wrong.

Noahs flood isnt simply a Sunday school story about sunny skies and rainbows. Real people died real sin was punished in a real flood. At the same time, Noahs life isnt just a grim story about fury and death. Even though God did execute judgment because people refused to forsake sin, he still showed grace to those who trusted him.

The problem, though, is that Noahs ability to build an ark and survive the flood didnt include any power to escape the corruption in his own heart. There needed to be another Noah story that didnt end in sin or cursesone that would conclude with consistent obedience, salvation, and a guarantee that water judgment would never be needed again.

# Understanding Ancient History

We have laid the groundwork for how we should read the account of Noah in Genesis 6-9. Based on the genre of Genesis 1-11, we should view the Flood as a historical event, but one depicted using figurative language in order to communicate its important message.

Hyperbole is a form of figurative language. Hyperbole exaggerates in order to produce an effect or to make a point. When my wife picks up my luggage and says it weighs a ton , she and I both know it does not literally weigh a ton, but she has made her point as I remind her I do not expect her to carry my luggage. She is not lying or misleading me, but I might think she is if I believe she is being literal. Indeed, I would show myself quite obtuse if I responded, It does not. It weighs 70 pounds, well under a ton!

In spite of Ken Hams best efforts to show otherwise, by building the ark he demonstrates the hyperbole in the Flood story. Yes, he has succeeded in building an ark the dimensions of Noahs ark . As I look at the online video of the construction, though, I notice all of the cranes, the metal scaffolding that keeps the structure from collapsing, the power tools, and last but not least the many, many skilled craftsmen and craftswomen who are building this large boat.

Jesus Ensures The End Of Judgment

As weve seen, the flood teaches several things. First, its a sober reminder that God judges rebels who dont repent. Also, its a precursor to the final judgment facing all of humanity. Yet its laced with promises of grace, because the flood was part of a bigger story that includes promises of final restoration and salvation.

Creation wont groan in chaos and be at odds with humanity. It will be restored, and a new Adam will lead a redeemed humanity to rule over it.

Even in washing most of humanity away, God proved faithful. He spared one family who would lead to the birth of the Savior. History was being pushed toward a better daya day when the earth will be restored. Creation will no longer groan in chaos. It will be restored, and a new Adam will lead a redeemed humanity to rule over it.

Noah Lived Out Obedience

Donald B. DeYoung from Blue Letter Bible shares that based on Scripture, he believes there was no rain before the time of Noah. No mention is made of rain on the earth until the Flood . The original earth and the Garden of Eden were watered by streams, rivers, and mist instead of by rain .” Donald points out that if there was never rain before Noahs time, then his obedience in building the ark must have looked extremely foolish to the people. Donald expounds, Likewise, the faith of Noah described in Hebrews 11:7 was especially strong. Noah was warned about things not seen, which is perhaps a further indication that rain was not part of humanity’s early experience.

In Genesis 6:14-21, God instructs Noah on how to construct the ark. He provides exact materials and measurements for Noah to follow. Even in the way that Noah obeyed the Lords command in creating this massive boat, we see his great trust in God. Noah took this mission seriously, even though he knew that others would not understand. The Lord might not be calling us to build an ark, but He does ask us to live by His Word and to follow Him. The world around us will not look on with delight and understanding but will likely criticize and laugh at our obedience. However, we can remember that Noah lived out in obedience faithfully to the Lord and it was a blessing back to him.

The Story Of Noahs Ark

Biblical Scene Noahs Ark Painting by English School

Noah was a man who lived during a time when the world was filled with violence and sin. God saw that the world was full of wickedness and decided to destroy it with a flood. Noah was a righteous man, however, and God told him to build an ark so that he could save himself and his family from the coming disaster.

Noah obeyed God, and he built an ark just as he had been instructed. He then gathered up his family and all of the animals two-by-two, and they boarded the ark just before the floodwaters began to fall. The ark floated on the water for 40 days and 40 nights until it finally came to rest on Mount Ararat.

When the waters finally receded, Noah and his family could leave the ark and start anew.

The story of Noah and the ark is about hope and new beginnings. After the floodwaters receded, Noah and his family were able to start fresh. They were given a second chance to repopulate the earth.

The story of Noah is found in the Torah, in the books of Genesis 6:98:22 and Genesis 9:117 .

Why Did The Flood Happen

According to the Bible, before the Flood mans wickedness was great. It adds that the earth had become ruined in the sight of the true God because it was filled with violence and sexual immorality.Genesis 6:11 Jude 6, 7.

The Bible says that much of this trouble was caused by wicked angels who left heaven to have relations with women. These angels had offspring called Nephilim, who wreaked havoc on humankind. God decided to clear the earth of wickedness and allow good people to have a fresh start.Genesis 6:6, 7, 17.

The Story Of Noah In The Bible A Short Summary

The Story of Noah in the Bible is found in Genesis 5th to 9th chapters. Noah is the son of Lamech and the ninth descendant of Adam through Seth. During his time, the world was filled with wickedness, immorality, and cruelty. God decided to destroy all humans and all the creatures along with the people.

However, Noah found favor and grace in Gods sight as he was an upright man and was not corrupted, unlike other people. God ordered Noah to build an ark in which he and his wife, his sons and their wives, together with the male and female of all living creatures, would reside in the time of the great flood that will wipe out all humans and animals.

Noah listened to Gods Word and built an ark according to Gods instructions.

Noah Building the Ark

When the flood came, He and his family along with the two of every sort of animals, male and female, were safe aboard the ark, while the rest of the human race who were sinful, unfaithful, and untrue along with the animals outside the ark perished.

The Story of Noah in the Bible teaches us that God will save those who are obedient to His words and follow his commandments. Humanity was given a second chance through Noah to restart, replenish, and renew itself through a new covenant. That is the crux of the story of Noah in the Bible.

Noahs Ark Was A Third Of The Size Of The Titanic

The Bible records the measurements of the ark in cubits. At 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high, the volume of the ark is estimated at about 1.5 million cubic feet, which is about a third of the volume of the Titanic. .

Some people argue that theres no way Noahs Ark could have held two of every kind of animal, but the numbers suggest otherwise. According to ark measurements, the big boat had about as much space as 250 railroad stock cars, which some folks have calculated can hold between 20,000 and 40,000 animals roughly the size of sheep.

A Summary And Analysis Of The Biblical Story Of The Flood And Noahs Ark

Science CONFIRMS Noahs Ark and the Flood!

The Biblical account of the Flood, in the Book of Genesis, is similar to the older Babylonian accounts of a Great Flood. These texts, written much earlier, include the Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem which predates Homers Iliad and Odyssey, and the earliest Old Testament accounts, by more than a millennium.

Its possible, therefore, that despite the difference in time periods, the Flood recorded in the Gilgamesh story and the Flood from the Book of Genesis are fictionalised versions of a real event which took place in the Middle East thousands of years ago, the memory of which was preserved through first oral and then written accounts .

Noah and the Flood: summary

God looked down on the human race and saw wickedness, violence, and evil everywhere . He decided to destroy all living things on the earth, except for Noah, who had found grace in the eyes of the LORD .

God instructed Noah to build an Ark that is 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. How long a cubit precisely is in this context has been disputed: although a common cubit was said to be 18 inches , its been argued that sacred cubits were several inches longer than this. God then instructed Noah to take two of every sort of animal into the ark, so that whilst the other animals would be wiped out, each species would be preserved through these two specimens.
