Richfield Church Of The Nazarene Celebrates 100 Years

Lead, Kindly Light

RICHFIELD TWP. One hundred years ago, the corner of Irish and Mt. Morris Roads was a dirt crossroads bordered by farm fields. Today, some of the farm fields are still there, but Richfield Church of the Nazarene stands proudly and prominently on the southwest corner, celebrating 100 years of service to our community.

Twenty-one pastors have preached the word of God from this location and 3 sanctuaries have housed a growing congregation.

Facilities for sports, childrens and teens activities, music, fellowship and worship have continued to expand. The average attendance for the Sunday morning 10:30 a.m. worship service is approximately 513 with Sunday school classes for all ages of children and adults at 9:30 a.m. Many other groups with a variety of goals and interests meet on Sunday night and throughout the week.

Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12-13, will mark the 100th anniversary of this vibrant congregation. Lead pastor Dr. Alan Duce, the staff and members invite you, your family and friends to help celebrate.

Relighting Richfield Church Of The Nazarene

Richfield Church of the Nazarene hosts both traditional and contemporary services for worshippers in Otisville, Michigan. The church recently turned to Mercury Sound and Lighting to install new house and theatrical lighting rigs, which feature Chalice LED downlights from Altman Lighting.

This was actually our first time working with the church and they wanted us to take a look at their theatrical and house lighting equipment which was reaching the end of its lifecycle, said Japheth Boivin, AV solutions facilitator at Mercury Sound and Lighting. The existing house lights were custom fixtures made specifically for the space when it was initially constructed, and they were becoming costly and difficult to maintain. To alleviate these challenges, they wanted an LED retrofit of their house lighting design, so we installed a package of Chalice LED downlights.

With a ceiling height of about 14m at some points, and no crawl space in a sanctuary that was built from the top down, running new lines to new locations was not an option. This was another one of the reasons we opted to go with the mains-dimmable Chalice fixtures, so that we could utilise the existing power lines and still have all of the benefits of an LED house lighting system. The install was a 1-to-1 replacement of the old system giving them a significant reduction in energy costs as one Chalice only pulls about 145W, compared to 1000-1500W each for the older fixtures.

Richfield Township Church Of The Nazarene Celebrates 100 Years

RICHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Michigan — With millions of members in 21,000 congregations worldwide, the Church of the Nazarene is obviously viewed favorably by many.

Among the first to get in on the action were local residents, who founded the Richfield Church of the Nazarene in 1915. Gene Smith, its pastor, said the mother church had been created only seven years earlier, and the Richfield congregation was the second in Michigan to be organized, following a sister church at Beulah, near Attica. On Oct. 5, many of the nearly 2 million Nazarene parishioners will mark their faith’s centennial with celebratory activities and by pledging their continued dedication to its mission.

The Richfield church, at Irish and Mt. Morris roads, is the only Nazarene parish in the Davison area, though dozens more operate in and near Genesee County.

Smith said his congregation’s strong growth parallels that of the entire denomination. The wooden church built for the parish in 1917 or 1918 was razed in the 1960s to make way for the current facilities, which have been expanded four times since — about once a decade — to accommodate the swelling membership.

Total membership stands at about 1,000 today, he said worship services draw the faithful from a domain extending as far north as Vassar, south to Goodrich and Grand Blanc, west to Swartz Creek and east to Lapeer.

The church recognizes two sacraments: Christian baptism and communion.

Located in Otisville, Michigan, Richfield Church of the Nazarene is dedicated to serving the community through an inspirational and heartfelt worship environment. Offering both contemporary and traditional services each week, the church recently underwent a lighting renovation to better create a positive and life-changing experience for all their members and guests. Needing an upgrade to the complete lighting system, they worked with the design professionals at Mercury Sound and Lighting who installed a new house design filled with Chalice LED downlights from Altman Lighting.
