“I’ve been to the temple a couple of times. This last time, was during our Christmas road trip to the Rockies. This is a very special place to visit during Christmas. It is very tastefully decorated for Christmas. And there are church members on every corner of the temple square singing Christmas carols. My only wish was that the Covid-19 pandemic wasn’t occurring so that we could have attended one of the Christmas concerts in the Tabernacle. Even though we weren’t able to do that, it was still a very special and memorable part of our Christmas road trip.”

History Of The Diocese

Over 200 years ago, the first Catholic priests traveled from New Mexico through Utah looking for an overland route to the Pacific Ocean. Today, Catholics in Utah number well over 300,000 , and are served by over 41 priests in 81 parishes, missions, stations and 17 Catholic schools. An area of nearly 85,000 square miles comprises the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

It was in 1776 that Franciscan friars Francisco Dominguez and Silvestre de Escalante crossed this territory with the help of local Native American guides. Six months later, diminishing supplies and threatening weather forced their expedition to return to New Mexico. It would be nearly 100 years before Catholic priests would formally establish their first foundation in Utah Territory.

In 1871 Fr. Patrick Walsh built the first Catholic Church in Utah, dedicating it to St. Mary Magdalene. Father Lawrence Scanlan arrived in 1873 to become pastor. Soon he would be given responsibility for the pastoral care of the Catholic military men, immigrant miners and railroad workers who numbered in the hundreds. Small churches, schools, an orphanage and a hospital were built, staffed by clergy and Holy Cross Sisters, to serve the growing Catholic population.

From that time to the present, this diocese has been blessed with assistance from Catholic Mission Societies such as the Catholic Church Extension Society, U.S. Bishop’s Committee on Home Missions, the Black and Indian collections and the Catholic Communication Campaign.

By 1866, however, the care of Utah was shiftedto the Vicariate of Marysville, which later became the Diocese of Grass Valley.A Vicariate of Colorado-Utah formed in 1868 proved too extensive to cover, andin 1870 jurisdiction over Utah reverted once again to San Francisco.

About The Intermountain Catholic 1899

As the geographic and spiritual center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , Utah is not often considered Catholic country. Nevertheless, Catholicism has a long history in the state, and, in fact, the first non-Native Americans to explore Utah were a group of Franciscan missionaries from New Mexico, the Dominguez and Escalante expedition, which entered Utah Valley in 1776.

Brought by trappers, traders, miners, and merchants, Catholicism remained a part of Utah in the years that followed. The faith grew as the territory grew, and in 1891 Salt Lake City became the center of a Catholic diocese. The official diocesan newspaper, the Intermountain Catholic, was first published on October 7, 1899, under the guidance of Father Denis Kiely. The newspaper covered six Intermountain statesUtah, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and Montanathe names of which were included in the masthead along with the motto: A Catholic paper for the Catholic home.

The first edition of the Intermountain Catholic, the LDS newspaper and the most popular periodical in the state. That issue of the Intermountain Catholic, which debuted as a weekly publication, also carried an item about a new apostolic delegation to the Philippines and an article responding to the Dreyfus Affair, a notorious scandal of the turn of the century that exposed anti-Semitism in the French Army. When I used to take parents on a tour at my school, I used to say that Our school is like a small town in a big city,’ Longe said. Schools and parishes become small neighborhoods for the Catholic community. Parents and students find and make lifelong friendships because they become involved with our schools.

Saint Ambrose Parish was established on January 4, 1948. The name of the parish was chosen by Bishop Hunt to honor St. Ambrose, the early Churchs learned and scholarly Bishop of Milan, and because his Episcopal coat of arms contained a beehive, both symbolic of Ambroses eloquence, and also the symbol of the State of Utah. The Patronal feast of the parish is December 7th, commemorating the day St. Ambrose was consecrated bishop in 374.

Our parochial school, J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School, accepts students toddler through eighth grade. The mission of J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School is to guide our students to become respectful, responsible, and productive citizens through quality academic instruction that is grounded in Catholic teachings and tradition.

We also have Religious Education classes for all children from 3 years old through eighth grade, the year in which we have Confirmation.
