Create Warmth In An Open Plan Living Room
Dividing the property’s central space into zones has given each area its own identity, and also helps to create a more intimate, cozy look and feel. Of course, if you’re looking for living room ideas, you can’t go wrong by grouping your sofas around a fireplace, as Dean has done here. The green footstool is bespoke and Dean bought the antique cupboards on either side of the fireplace from a local auction house. Both the rug and fireplace were online auction buys. The dark wood and Gothic styling of the fire surround make it the perfect choice for a former church.
The Biblical Precedent For Interior Design
If you go back to Exodus 31, Eleazar says, God gave two men the gift of craftsmanship.
The Lord said to Moses, See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, and the finely worked garments, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the Holy Place. According to all that I have commanded you, they shall do. Exodus 31:111
This passage played an important part in Eleazars journey to identify a calling the church had ignored.
But in the Bible, God clearly cares about how things look and feel, and what we say about him through the things we create.

Things To Remember When Designing Church
A church, referred by the Christians, is a building for their religious activities, and particularly for the worship services as a whole or a body of Christian believers. The church is a space that serves and is crucial for the community. Thus, one must think of all the aspects while designing a church.
The shape of a church building is symbolism of its power and the understandings of God. However, the planning of the church has an impactful effect on the possible liturgical uses. Some churches have created sanctuaries that become entertainment spaces consisting of a stage, lighting and theatre-style seats. There is absolute truth in the statement by Winston Churchill that we shape our buildings and ever after they shape us.
The following guidelines are the ten nuggets of wisdom to keep in mind while designing a Church:

Do Formal Dining In Style
Although there’s room for friends around the smaller dining table in the mezzanine kitchen, a more formal space like this is just perfect for entertaining a crowd. If you’re thinking of dining room ideas or of reconfiguring a dining area, your starting point should be how many diners will you be entertaining, and how often?
This mahogany dining table seats 14 people with ease and was a bargain buy from a local auctioneers. The large mural across the back of the space is India Couleur by Ananbo , and the orange tone has been picked out in the woodwork. The couple brought some antiques with them from London but like to mix in mid-century pieces and buy furniture specially, or in the case of the huge antique bookcase borrow from friends.

A curtain in Balangan fabric by Manuel Canovas provides an additional splash of colour.

Church Interior Design That Connects
An architect and an interior designer share space-freshening ideas to help people linger, longer.
Every one of your church clients is looking to connect with local community. So the wish list for enhancing their image may be long. The problem is, most churches are on tight budgets.
With some creative thinking and clever hacks, interior designers and architects can help create environments that welcome people to come in, hang out, and repeat.
Church.Design reached out to two long-time church designers who weighed in with common-sense, cost-effective ways to achieve tighter community connection through interior design. And by and large, their ideas won’t break church clients’ budgets.
Update fixtures & hardware. Repurpose the existing space with small but creative details, says Sharon Exley, MAAE and co-founder of Chicago’s Architecture Is Fun. Head into the bathroom, kitchen or public spaces that have a lot of millwork. Simple, relatively inexpensive upgrades on sink faucets, towel racks, knobs and pulls amazingly have a huge impact on spaces. These changes may seem relatively insignificant, yet they create a clean aesthetic one which demonstrates value.”
Many new hardware products improve accessibility, using sensors and tactile surfaces, she adds. For example, specifying all black matte faucets, handles and accessories made a previously dated space seem new and novel. So add some visual intrigue, whether sleek and modern or recycled and industrial.

Interior Design For The Small Church
Theres always somebody in your church who cares about design. At least one person. Eleazar says. Whether theyre talented or not is a completely different question, but there is always someone who cares, no matter how small your church is.
Small churches are still capable of building a design team.
For small churches I say use that one person. Theres someone who has been wanting to serve in that way but hasnt found their place, or maybe hasnt felt valuablelike me.
The creatives in your church need to know that their passion for good design is important to your church and to Godbecause it really does affect people. If you dont validate and affirm that calling, your churchand the body of Christcould be missing out on something powerful and beautiful that God is trying to stir up in your midst.
I talk to a lot of designers who are discouraged about not being used within the church. They just need to see that you care, that what they care about is valuable, and that youre looking for someone.
Sometimes that affirmation is all it takes to get things moving in your church.
Usually from there, you can go, because that person feels empowered, Eleazar says. They have ownership over that particular area of the church. What theyre going to do is find more people like them. And a year later you have a team.
As your design team expands, the design of your church can more closely reflect the diversity of your church.
And its okay if they arent professionals.
Get Bedroom Basics Right
A calm scheme of grays and off-whites ensures the main bedroom is a relaxing retreat essential for any bedroom ideas. The bed headboard is covered in Pierre Freys Reglisse . The table lamp is by Justin Van Breda . In the doorway is a a treasured painting by daughter Georgia, along with modern art made of margarine tubs by Hani Najm .
It’s a very restful space now, but Dean found out that his plans to build a whole new floor for the master suite and spare bedroom in the loft initially gave his builder nightmares!
Our builder was great, but to strengthen the floor sufficiently, we needed three steels of 12 metres each,’ says Dean. ‘He admitted to me later that hed had sleepless nights over that one.

Keep In Mind Building Codes
Building codes are important, as certain limits trigger requirements. Here are some examples:
- Sprinkler systems: A building needs to be sprinkled based on the number of occupants and square footage.
- Kitchens: The type of kitchen youre using is important. A warming kitchen is different from a commercial kitchen.
Check out our post on building codes for more details.

History And Current Terms
In the past, interiors were put together instinctively as a part of the process of building.
The profession of interior design has been a consequence of the development of society and the complex architecture that has resulted from the development of industrial processes.
The pursuit of effective use of space, user well-being and functional design has contributed to the development of the contemporary interior design profession. The profession of interior design is separate and distinct from the role of interior decorator, a term commonly used in the US the term is less common in the UK, where the profession of interior design is still unregulated and therefore, strictly speaking, not yet officially a profession.
In ancient India, architects would also function as interior designers. This can be seen from the references of Vishwakarma the architectone of the gods in Indian mythology. In these architects’ design of 17th-century Indian homes, sculptures depicting ancient texts and events are seen inside the palaces, while during the medieval times wall art paintings were a common feature of palace-like mansions in India commonly known as havelis. While most traditional homes have been demolished to make way to modern buildings, there are still around 2000 havelis in the Shekhawati region of Rajashtan that display wall art paintings.

Think About Your Needs
Start with a wish list. Think about all the needs you have in the facility, and consider how space would address them.
- Do you need more space for worship, or would you like a fellowship hall, too?
- Would you like to expand your facility to include classrooms and daycare facilities?
- Do you want to include risers, music areas, sound boards and wiring runs in the worship area?
Beyond your immediate space needs, there are some big picture considerations in terms of building, such as:
Sustainable building: Is your church going to be a green building?
Building techniques: Are you comparing different construction approaches?
Choosing a builder: Are you looking for someone who can meet your building needs?
Go Big In A Small Bathroom
The spectacular wallpaper in the downstairs bathroom is Pierre Freys Alleluia , which is based on a Gothic design from 1830 and so ties in with the age of the former church.
It’s easy to talk yourself out of choosing a special wallcovering based on its cost, but a little luxury goes a long way and if you find exactly the right bathroom wallpaper, as Dean did here, then it will make a big impact even in the smallest room in the house.

Transition To Professional Interior Design
By the turn of the 20th century, amateur advisors and publications were increasingly challenging the monopoly that the large retail companies had on interior design. English feminist author wrote a series of widely read essays in the 1880s in which she derided the eagerness with which aspiring middle-class people furnished their houses according to the rigid models offered to them by the retailers. She advocated the individual adoption of a particular style, tailor-made to the individual needs and preferences of the customer:
- “One of my strongest convictions, and one of the first canons of good taste, is that our houses, like the fishs shell and the birds nest, ought to represent our individual taste and habits.
By 1900, the situation was described by The Illustrated Carpenter and Builder:
- “Until recently when a man wanted to furnish he would visit all the dealers and select piece by piece of furniture ….Today he sends for a dealer in art furnishings and fittings who surveys all the rooms in the house and he brings his artistic mind to bear on the subject.”

How Aesthetics Affect Your Congregation
The same way we try to create a romantic setting for our spousesnot super light, not super dark, use the candleslighting communicates temperature and how inviting your room is, Eleazar says.
Lighting affects your perception of what you hear, see, and smelldo the things our senses experience fit together?
Fluorescent lighting can create a corporate feel. It doesnt feel reverent, so it seems out of place in church.
The physical shape and structure of a room can also affect how you feel within it. After visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum, Eleazar observed:
He made spaces very low, and the doors were low so you had to bend over when you open them, he says. That whole experience of bowing down to enter a room, standing up as you step through the doorway, and sitting in a low chair, made me feel like the space was bigger than it was.
Even the place he sat changed how he felt about the room.
The chair was dipped, angled up so I slipped into it. The low chair made me look up at the ceiling and feel like it was higher up, Eleazar says. He shaped the way I sit.
The actions the design makes you do communicates something to you. It encourages you to be reverent or disrespectful.
At the church he visited in Seattle, Eleazar noticed how other design elements affected his spiritual experience throughout the service.
We listened to monks sing, and they were in the back, behind you, so that you arent focusing on them.
