On October 6, 2007, the 18th Regular Sobor of the UOC-USA nominated Hieromonk Daniel as Bishop-Elect for the UOC of the USA. On January 9, 2008, Patriarch Bartholomew and the Great and Holy Synod of Constantinople formally elected and ritually included Archimandrite Daniel in the Diptychs of Holy Orthodoxy as titular Bishop of Pamphilon. Bishop Daniel was consecrated as bishop in May 2008, at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Parma, OH.

Congregants Offer Prayers At St Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church In Bloomingdale With Their Family Members Sitting In Middle Of War

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. — There were prayers for peace across Chicago’s Ukrainian community Thursday night, from services in Palatine and Bloomingdale to gatherings in Ukrainian Village.

As CBS 2’s Jermont Terry reported, dozens filled the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Bloomingdale praying with a purpose for those for whom they care so deeply, and with a great deal on their own minds and hearts.

The congregants filled the church late Thursday night as the sun was just coming up Friday morning in Ukraine the time of day when many a href=”https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/russia-ukraine-invasion-donbas-troops-today/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”> Russian airstrikes have happened. They prayed at the exact hours they worried most about their family members.

When the Russian missiles went off this week, Andrew Zelinskyi said, “It broke my heart it broke the heart of my families.”

Zelinskyi’s parents and brothers live in Ukraine. They are about a seven-hour drive from the capital Kyiv. But uncertainty is still surrounding them.

“I’m scared when it’s too dark,” he said, “so usually, I’m worried.”

Those at the prayer service did more than relying on faith. They hoped this is a war that Ukraine can win.

“So far now, I’m talking I talk with my family,” Zelinskyi said.

Zelinskyi most recently returned home to Ukraine in January. He took a picture with his mom and dad.

Now, he worries about whether he can ever return at all, and if so, what he will return to.

Ukrainian Orthodox Church In Bloomingdale Collecting Help For The Homeland

As the Russian military continues to pound Ukraine, the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church is urging the suburban community to help in any way they can.

To add to the donations already collected, on Saturdays the church at 300 Army Trail Road in Bloomingdale will be selling pierogi, cabbage rolls and pastries. The kitchen is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bloomingdale church leaders say, thus far, they have donated $353,000 to a church in Mariupol, which they say has spent it on tourniquets, diapers, food and baby formula. Mariupol, in southeastern Ukraine, is a key port city and has been under siege by Russian troops, who blocked off supplies of water and food, cut power and bombed a maternity hospital.

Currently, Mariupol has no reliable count of the dead because authorities have not been able to collect all the bodies, officials there said. The Washington Post reported on Thursday that according to an adviser to the Mariupol mayor’s office, 1,300 people have died in the city since Russian forces surrounded it, and at least 3,000 have been injured.

“While we inch along, innocent people are being killed by the hundreds,” said John Jaresko, president of the board of directors at St. Andrew.

“They are just burying hundreds of bodies. I hope the world rallies around this.”

Bloomingdale Court Collection Point

A donation drop-off site for the Ukrainian relief effort is being established at Bloomingdale Court, 366 W. Army Trail Road, Suite 340, next to Fruitful Yield and across from Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Prioritized donations are nonperishable food, clothes and shoes, thermal underwear, blankets, first-aid kits, sleeping bags, containers for liquids, and hygiene products such as diapers and toothpaste,.

The drop-off is open from 5 to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

As War Looms Local Ukrainians Show Support For Family Back Home

Local Ukrainians over the weekend showed their solidarity with friends and family back home as the threat of war with Russia intensifies.

The current tensions on Ukraine’s border come on the eighth anniversary of the Maidan massacre when pro-Russian forces killed more than a hundred protestors on Kyiv’s Independence Square.

Father Roman Tarnavsky of St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Jamaica Plain said his church’s annual memorial service felt especially relevant this year.

“This is a scary time. A very difficult time,” Tarnavsky said. “I cannot imagine in the 21st century, this is happening.”

Tarnavsky said Ukraine serves as a barrier between Russia and the rest of Europe.

“If Russia will attack Ukraine, it’s my opinion, it will attack all Europe,” he noted.

Tarnavsky said he prays for an end to the cycle of violence.

Down the road in the parking lot of a Catholic church, dozens of people draped blue and yellow Ukrainian flags over their cars as they prepared to drive from Jamaica Plain to Back Bay in a motorcade rally.

“I’ve lived in Boston for 26 years, it’s home now, but my soul is in Ukraine,” said Olena McHugh of West Roxbury. “It’s my motherland, always will be.”

She said she fears Russia will soon invade Ukraine, but still hopes for a peaceful resolution.

“It’s like a war between sisters or brothers,” McHugh said. “It’s shameful, it’s painful.”

St Andrew Memorial Church

St. Andrew Memorial Church is a Ukrainian Orthodoxcathedral on Main Street, in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, United States. It is the mother church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

The church is dedicated as a memorial to the victims of the Stalin-era Great Famine of 193233, and to all Ukrainians who died in the quest for liberty and national independence.

The idea for a memorial church is credited to Archbishop Mstyslav , later Metropolitan, who had lamented in 1942 how many churches and cemeteries, and thus Ukraine’s cultural and political leaders, had been destroyed under the Soviets. In 1950, work on his vision began with the acquisition of land in Somerset County. He engaged Ukrainian-Canadian architect George Kodak, who took inspiration from St Andrew’s Church, Kiev. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on July 21, 1955. The cemetery received its first burial in 1964, the Ukrainian sculptor Serhiy Lytvynenko, and the church was dedicated on October 10, 1965.

The structure is a notable example of Ukrainian Baroque Cossack architecture. Later contributions to the interior ornamentation include mosaics and icons by Petro Cholodny and woodcarving by Andreas Darahan. It is the focus of the Ukrainian Orthodox Center, whose 100-acre campus includes a cemetery, seminary, library, museum, and other facilities.

St Andrew’s Church Kyiv

St Andrew’s Church is an Orthodox church in Kyiv, constructed between 1747 and 1754 to a design by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, a rare example of Elizabethan Baroque in Ukraine. Situated on a steep hill, where Andrew the Apostle is believed to have foretold the great future of the place as the cradle of Christianity in the Slavic lands, the church overlooks the historic Podil neighborhood. Since 1968, the building has been a museum, part of the National Sanctuary “Sophia of Kyiv” as a landmark of cultural heritage.

At the beginning of the 21st century the building faced serious problems due to the unstable foundation and it underwent major renovation at the end of the 2010s, after it was gifted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The parish of St. Andrew was formed in 1954 and draws people of the Orthodox faith, both of Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian heritage. Worshippers give glory to the One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. What Is Ukrainian Catholic

We’re Catholic, but not Roman Catholic. So, what are we?

In simplistic terms, the Ukrainian Catholic Church, also known as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, is a part of the Catholic Church that observes the same traditions as does Eastern Orthodoxy. It is, however, very much part of the Catholic Church. The current head of the Universal Catholic Church, and hence the Ukrainian Catholic Church, is Pope Francis.

Many people do not know the Catholic Church consists of over twenty churches. The largest by population is the Roman Catholic Church. The non-Roman Catholic Churches fit into one of six liturgical traditions: Alexandrian, Antiochene , Armenian, Byzantine, Maronite, and Chaldean. The Ukrainian Catholic Church follows the Byzantine tradition, and traces its origins to the Union of Brest in 1596 A.D., when the Church in Kyiv entered into communion with Rome.

Differences between Ukrainian Catholicism and Roman Catholicism range from minor to significant. Ukrainian Catholics cross themselves from right to left, not left to right Holy Communion is always distributed directly into the mouths of communicants by a priest using a spoon and married Ukrainian Catholic men can be ordained as priests or deacons. However, unmarried clergy may not marry and widowed clergy may not remarry.
