Parables of Jesus: Parable of the Good Samaritan

In the time of Jesus, the road from Jerusalem to Jericho was notorious for its danger and difficulty, and was known as the “Way of Blood” because “of the blood which is often shed there by robbers”., on the day before his assassination, described the road as follows:

I remember when Mrs. King and I were first in Jerusalem. We rented a car and drove from Jerusalem down to Jericho. And as soon as we got on that road, I said to my wife, “I can see why Jesus used this as the setting for his parable.” It’s a winding, meandering road. It’s really conducive for ambushing. You start out in Jerusalem, which is about 1200 milesâor rather 1200 feet above sea level. And by the time you get down to Jericho, fifteen or twenty minutes later, you’re about 2200 feet below sea level. That’s a dangerous road.

We Formalized Our Commitment To Outreach And Social Justice

1970

Our Program Committee decided we needed to take more social action in our community. Good Sam became more deeply involved with Good Samaritan Hospital and Samaritan Village.

We made new efforts to minister to the elderly, including those in nursing homes. We opened our building to BARC and the blood bank, cooperated with the Corvallis Council of Churches, and participated in other community endeavors too. Folk masses were held on Sunday evenings.

1971

Good Sam became debt-free, and Bishop Carman consecrated our building. The same year, the Episcopal Church began allowing children to receive communion before confirmation. But membership began to decline.

1973

Our Deaconess Noel Knelange was appointed Director of Religious Education our Program Committee wrote the job description for her.

On Easter, the kneelers in our sanctuary designed by art collectors Mark and Janeth Sponenburgh, and built by the Episcopal Church Women were used for the first time.

1976

Bishop Matthew Paul Bigliardi consecrated a new building for the Good Samaritan Hospital.

We renovated our campus ministry Canterbury House on 26th and Monroe and gave it a meditation chapel.

1981

In America The Anglican Church Became The Episcopal Church

1782

Bishop William White published a pamphlet called The Case of the Episcopal Churches in the U.S. Considered.

It was the first proposal for an American Episcopal Church: conforming to Anglican tradition, but separate from the Church of England.

1784

A group of Connecticut clergymen chose Samuel Seabury to be the American Episcopal Churchs first bishop. He went to England to be ordained but was refused because he wouldnt pledge allegiance to the King. Finally, he was ordained in Aberdeen, Scotland, at St. Andrews Episcopal Cathedral.

In New Jersey, an assembly of clergy and laymen agreed on a preliminary declaration of principles and called for a larger convention to organize the Church further.

1785

Church members from most states met in Philadelphia for their first general convention. They began to form a Church constitution and a revision of the Book of Common Prayer, but there were many disagreements. This group wanted American bishops to be ordained by English bishops.

1786

An Act of Parliament was passed, allowing American bishops to be ordained without an oath of allegiance to the King.

1787

William White and Samuel Provoost, the first bishop in New York, were ordained in England.

Church of The Good Samaritan

Set him on his own beast. Christ, fulfilling prophecy, bears our infirmities . The Samaritanâs beast was thought to symbolize Christâs body. Being placed on his beast is to believe that God became flesh, bore our sins, and suffered for us.

Inn. For the early Christians this element readily symbolized the Church. An âinnâ was âa public house open to all.â A public shelter is comparable to the Church of Christ in several ways. A wayside inn is not the heavenly destination but a necessary aid in helping travelers reach their eternal home.

Took care of him. The Samaritan stayed with the injured person and cared for him personally the first night. He did not turn the injured person over too quickly to the innkeeper but stayed with him through the dark hours. As Origen commented, Jesus cares for the wounded ânot only during the day, but also at night. He devotes all his attention and activity to him.â

We Established The Canterbury House For Our Campus Ministry

1960

We sold our activity center on Seventh and Adams to the Elks, and bought the Wooster property on 26th and Monroe for the use of our campus ministry, the Canterbury Club.

1961

We laid the cornerstone for our new building on 35th and Harrison. Bishop James Walmesley Frederic Carman held a dedication. The organ was installed in stages. Lawn sprinklers were added. The parking lot was paved.

Our old church building was later moved to Madison and Seventh, where it became the Corvallis Arts Center. The rectory that we built for it in 1929 was also moved its located on Peoria Road today.

Episcopal Tradition Spread To Corvallis In The Chapel Of The Good Samaritan

1853

Dr. John McCarty held the first-recorded Episcopal service in Corvallis, Oregon.

1871

Occasional services in Corvallis grew into a mission at the St. Marys School for girls. The school survived only two years, but its Chapel of the Good Samaritan remained in use until a church could be built.

1877

Wallis Nash, a lawyer from England, arrived in Corvallis with his family to provide legal counsel for the railroad, which was being built from Corvallis to Yaquina Bay.

1887

But A Certain Samaritan As He Journeyed Came Where He Was: And When He Saw Him He Had Compassion On Him And Went To Him And Bound Up His Wounds Pouring In Oil And Wine

A Good Samaritan

Samaritan. The early Christian writers unanimously saw the good Samaritan as a representation of Christ. Chrysostom suggests that a Samaritan is an apt depiction of Christ because âas a Samaritan is not from Judea, so Christ is not of this world.â

Jesusâs audience in Jerusalem may well have recognized here a reference by the Savior to Himself. Some Jews in Jerusalem rejected Jesus with the insult, âSay we not well that thou art a Samaritan?â . Because Nazareth is across the valley north of Samaria, these two locations could easily be lumped together. And just as the Samaritans were viewed as the least of all humanity, so it was prophesied that the Messiah would be âdespised and rejected of menâ and âesteemed notâ .

As he journeyed. It would appear that the Samaritan was purposely looking for people in need of help. The text does not say that he arrived by happenstance. Origen noted that âhe went down intending to rescue and care for the dying man.â The Savior came purposefully with oil and bandages âto bring redemption unto the worldâ .

Bound up his wounds. Some early Christians said that the bandages represented love, faith, and hope, âligatures of salvation which cannot be undone.â Others saw the bands as Christâs teachings, which bind us to righteousness. Latter-day Saints would add that the rescued person is bound to the Lord through covenants .

As A Metaphor And Name

The term “good Samaritan” is used as a common metaphor: “The word now applies to any charitable person, especially one who, like the man in the parable, rescues or helps out a needy stranger.”

The name has consequently been used for a number of charitable organizations, including Samaritans, Samaritan’s Purse, Sisters of the Good Samaritan, and The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong. The name Good Samaritan Hospital is used for a number of hospitals around the world. Good Samaritan laws encourage those who choose to serve and tend to others who are injured or ill.

Art And Popular Culture

This parable was one of the most popular in medieval art. The allegorical interpretation was often illustrated, with Christ as the Good Samaritan. Accompanying angels were sometimes also shown. In some Eastern Orthodoxicons of the parable, the identification of the Good Samaritan as Christ is made explicit with a halo bearing a cross.

The numerous later artistic depictions of the parable include those of Rembrandt, , Vincent van Gogh, Aimé Morot, Domenico Fetti, Johann Carl Loth, George Frederic Watts, and Giacomo Conti. Vincent van Gogh’s painting captures the reverse hierarchy that is underscored in Luke’s parable. Although the priest and Levite are near the top of the status hierarchy in Israel and the Samaritans near the bottom, van Gogh reverses this hierarchy in the painting.

In his essay Lost in Non-Translation, biochemist and author Isaac Asimov argues that to the Jews of the time there were no good Samaritans in his view, this was half the point of the parable. As Asimov put it, we need to think of the story occurring in Alabama in 1950, with a mayor and a preacher ignoring a man who has been beaten and robbed, with the role of the Samaritan being played by a poor black sharecropper.

Australian poet Henry Lawson wrote a poem on the parable , of which the third stanza reads:

Which Stripped Him Of His Raiment And Wounded Him And Departed Leaving Him Half Dead

Stripped him of his raiment. Early Christians sensed that Jesus spoke of something important here. Origen and Augustine saw the loss of the travelerâs garment as a symbol for mankindâs loss of immortality and incorruptibility. Chrysostom spoke of the loss of âhis robe of immortalityâ or ârobe of obedience.â Ambrose spoke of the traveler being âstripped of the covering of spiritual grace which we received .â

The attackers apparently wanted the travelerâs clothing, for no mention is made of any wealth or commodities he might be carrying. For some reason, the robbers seem interested in his garment, something brought down from the holy place and something they envy and want to take away.

Wounded. This term was seen as a similitude of the pains of life, travails of the soul, and afflictions due to diverse sins and vices. Indeed, the enemies of the soul leave wounds . Transgression has real effects .

Half dead. The robbers departed, leaving the person precisely âhalf dead.â We may see in this detail an allusion to the first and second deaths. The person had fallen, had become subject to sin, and had suffered the first death, becoming mortal. But the second death, the permanent separation from God, could still be averted .

Our Rector Bill Mccarthy Helped Created Samaritan Health Services

Bill McCarthy became Rector of Good Sam. Fr. Bill was closely involved in the creation of Samaritan Health Services, which grew out of Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. During his 17 years of service, our church devoted significant effort to support the wellbeing of the wider Corvallis community. In partnership with other faith groups, we co-sponsored the creation of the Hope & Wholeness Counseling Center and Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers.

1992

We founded a preschool and kindergarten within Good Sam.

2006

The church called Simon Justice to become the Rector of Good Sam. The church preschool and kindergarten expanded to become a grade school. Meanwhile, Samaritan Village Retirement Community received new HUD funding to undertake a major renovation of its 1960s-era facilities.

The Neville Era Began Launching Nearly 40 Years Of Sweeping Change

1943

The Rev. Charles Neville became our rector, beginning a 37-year tenure of such sweeping change that weve often called it the Neville Era. A new organ was donated. We budgeted money for student work at Oregon State College, a cause we continue to support financially today. Attendance increased dramatically.

Where Later The Church Of England Was Formed

Henry VIII broke ties with the Pope over the Kings proposed marriage to Anne Boleyn and established the independent Church of England.

It was no longer controlled by Rome, though it did retain the traditional structure and doctrine of the ancient church.

The Book of Common Prayer, which we use in our liturgy, was published for the first time.

A Type And Shadow Of The Plan Of Salvation

Readers gain much by pondering the scriptures, especially as these writings testify of Jesus Christ . The parable of the good Samaritan testifies of Christ. It teaches of the plan of salvation, the Saviorâs atoning love, and our journey toward inheriting eternal life. It can be read as a story not only about a man who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, but also about all who come down from the presence of God to live on earth. This meaning becomes most visible in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ restored through His latter-day prophets.

Let us examine the story, starting in Luke 10:30.

This Evolved Into The Church Of The Good Samaritan

1889

Wallis Nash built our first church on the corner of Jefferson and Seventh, salvaging building materials from the Chapel School to do so. An engineer from the railroad served as its architect, designing the structure in Carpenter Gothic style, with cross-beams and arches following the pattern of a railroad bridge in reverse.

Bishop Benjamin Wistar Morris proposed to name it the Church of the Good Samaritan. The vestry approved.

1891

The Church of the Good Samaritan got its first rector, the Rev. George F. Plummer, and held its first recorded service. That spring, we were incorporated as a parish and accepted for union with the Convention of the Diocese. Wallis Nash, whod built the church, was elected as one of our first wardens.

1894

Professor George Coote held a work party, planting $50 of shrubbery to beautify our grounds. Adjusted for 120 years of inflation, this would have amounted to over $1,300.

1895

The original rectory next to the School Chapel was moved to be near the new church.

1909

A parish hall was built and named Coote Hall after Professor Coote.

1911

The church, parish hall, and rectory were valued at $10,000. Adjusted for 100 years of inflation, this would have amounted to over $228,000.

And By Chance There Came Down A Certain Priest That Way: And When He Saw Him He Passed By On The Other Side And Likewise A Levite When He Was At The Place Came And Looked On Him And Passed By On The Other Side

The arrival of the Jewish priest was âby chance,â not the result of a conscious search. His presence there was not by anyoneâs plan.

A certain priest ⦠and likewise a Levite. The early Christian commentators all saw the priest as symbolizing the law of Moses. In their minds the problem was not that bearers of the Old Testament priesthood did not want to help fallen man, but that the law of Moses did not have the power to save him. Indeed, the law of Moses was only a type and shadow of the Atonement that was yet to come, not its full efficacy .

The Levite was seen as representing the Old Testament prophets, whose words the Lord came to fulfill . A lesser class of priests, the Levites did chores in the temple. At least this Levite came close to helping he âcameâ and saw. He may have wanted to help, but perhaps he viewed himself as too lowly to help he also lacked the power to save the dying person.
