Jesus Is The Great Physician Meaning And Detailed Explanation With Bible Verse

Jesus has the ability to diagnose and treat whatever is wrong with you. âThen Jesus said to the centurion, âGo! It will be done just as you believed it would.â And his servant was healed at that very hour. Matthew 8:13 .

One of the benefits of redemption is Divine health. The healing of our infirmities and diseases is a benefit accrued to us by redemption. We are saved, amongst other things to enjoy Divine health and Divine healing. That is why the Bible says that we are healed by the stripes of Jesus Christ , And this post is a full explanation of the great Physicianâs meaning.

Jesus Heals The Paralytic

tells the story of Jesus healing the paralytic. His caring and concerned friends break down the roof of the house where Jesus is teaching, just so Jesus could heal him. Jesus saw their faith and spoke to the paralyzed man- your sins are forgiven. This incensed the religious leaders they considered this blasphemy.

Jesus responds- But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins He tells the man to pick up his mat and walk.

Jesuss claim was true, and to prove it, He healed the paralytic- physically and spiritually.

Jesuss healing restores dignity.

Those with physical disabilities could return to work and live a normal life.

He restores a deaf and mute man in private, away from the crowds.

A woman bleeding for 12 years only has to touch Jesus cloak in faith to be healed. Once considered constantly unclean, she now can live a normal life.

Jesus healed many demon-possessed individuals. The demons that controlled these people tortured them relentlessly. Healing meant a return to peace, their families, and a normal life.

The Great Physician Verse

There is no verse that names Jesus the Great Physician, but the following story ends with the words of Jesus that explain its origin.

Matthew 9:10-13:

Jesus and His disciples were sharing a meal at Matthews house after he accepted Christs call to follow Him. Matthew invited his friends, who happened to be fellow tax collectors, and those deemed sinners by the self-righteous Pharisees. Eating with them meant they would be ceremonially unclean and when the Pharisees saw this, they questioned the disciples about their Rabbis actions.

Jesus heard them and replied:

It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. Matthew 9:12 NIV.

It seems like a simple statement, right? But its the significant and principal reason Jesus came to us as fully human and fully God.

We all suffer from the disease of sin. Its a deadly and fatal disease with only one cure. Only Jesus has the powerful prescription we need- His sacrifice on the cross as a substitution for the penalty our sin deserves.

He is the healer of our greatest ailment, He is our Great Physician.

Jesus: The Great Physician

Jesus is the Great Physician according to Mark 2:17. He came to cure the sick and poor in spirit and to heal our souls and restore our relationship with God. In his time on earth, to show his power not only did he heal spriits and of course provide the cure on the cross of the horrible affliction of sin, but he also healed many physical maladies, including death itself.

While he likely did more miracles than we even know, we do know about some of them as related in the Gospels. These acts took place across Israel and today some of them you are actually able to visit.

Jesus Heals The Mind And The Heart

In His Wings

During His ministry, Jesus didnt heal only peoples physical bodies. He cared for the other aspects of their ailments as well. He knew what they needed besides getting rid of their sicknesses.

For example, when Jesus healed a man with leprosy in Matthew 8:1-4, He first touched him. We dont know for how long that man had been sick. Due to the strict laws regarding skin diseases, we can assume that, for the duration of his illness, no one had ever touched him, until Jesus did. His touch was the first physical contact he had had in a long time.

Jesus also told him to show himself to the priest and follow what the Law of Moses determined that he should do in that case. The procedure would allow him to be socially and religiously active again. After the priest confirmed his healing, he would be able to go to the Temple, to move back inside the city, and to touch and be touched. He would have his normal life back. It was not only about physical healing. Jesus took care of this mans emotional, social, and psychological needs as well.

The Bible mentions other aspects of the mind and the heart that Jesus takes care of. For example, He takes care of our anxiety . He gives us peace , rest , and joy . He gives purpose to our lives and makes us part of His family . Every good thing that we have and everything we need comes from the Father through Him .

Ecclesiasticus 3: 4 Context

1Honour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the Lord hath created him. 2For of the most High cometh healing, and he shall receive honour of the king. 3The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration. 4The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth and he that is wise will not abhor them. 5Was not the water made sweet with wood, that the virtue thereof might be known? 6And he hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works. 7With such doth he heal men, and taketh away their pains.

Jesus The Great Physician

He is available 24/7 so that by His wounds we are healed. There is no bill to be paid- His services are free. He paid it all for us.

He also gives us the medicine of His Word to heal our unbelief, our broken hearts, loneliness, emotional wounds, sorrow, illness, pain and loss. Jesus knew pain in His life too- emotional, physical, and spiritual. He can empathize with all our suffering.

Is there any area in your life where you need Gods healing?

Our Jehovah Rapha- the God who heals- and Jesus Christ still heal today. They want us to experience healing in all aspects of our lives. No matter what ails us, we can reach out and trust in His loving and faithful care.

Did you notice Jesus did not once condemn any of the people who came for healing? The same is true today. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1 NIV. Jesus does not want to condemn you He wants to make you whole and perfect in His sight. We just need to come to Him.

Jesus Is The Great Physician

Jairus by now must be beside himself in anxiety and frustration. His daughter is at deaths door. This woman has been sick for 12 yearsshe could have waited another 30 minutes! Unlike Nicodemus, who came in the dark of night, he came in daylight, humble and begging. He demanded nothing, and look where it got him!

Note the similarities between Jairus and the nameless woman: they knew only Jesus could help them they knew they were unworthy they fell down and they believed Jesus could heal. She got what she wanted. However, things for Jairus appear to go from bad to worse.

Jesus is interrupted with bad news: Jairus daughter is dead. Hope is suddenly gone. Jesus responds to the bad news with a challenge. It is as if He is saying: Despite all appearances I am neither distracted nor disinterested in your need. I work in My time, not others time. I will not be hurried or dictated to. Believe and watch what I do.

He takes the inner circle of Peter, James, and John. This is the first time He separates them from the others. Professional mourners had arrived to accompany the family with their loud wailing. It would have been quite a scene. Jesus rebukes them with a shocking statement that only invites their ridicule. He kicks them out of the house and goes in with just the three disciples and the little girls parents.

What Is The Purpose Of Jesus Healing Ministry

Luke 6-7 Audio Bible (King James Version)

Jesus healed lepers, the blind, deaf, deformed, and crippled. He healed fevers, the maimed, the paralyzed, and many more. We read many times that crowds of people came to be healed by Jesus. There is so much more healing that we dont even know about!

But there more than just restoration, health, and well-being.

Matthew tells us:

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases. Matthew 8:16-17 NIV.

All of our sicknesses- physical, mental, and spiritual- result from mans original sin and the curse that followed.

When Jesus comes with healing, God is showing us that Jesus is the only one who can remove the curse.

Just as Jesus physically and emotionally healed all who came to Him, His sacrifice for our redemption is for all who come to Him- a onetime cure for the sin that sickens us.

Bible Verses About God As Doctor

And He said, If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians for I, the Lord, am your healer.

The Imitation Of Christ

He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, saith the Lord. These are the words of Christ and they direct us to imitate his life and character. The Imitation of Christ is a guide to following the example of Jesus Christ. It should be our most earnest study to dwell upon the life of Jesus Christ. The Imitation of Christ.

A royal officials son lay gravely ill at his home 20 miles away. His father came to Jesus when he heard He was in the area and begged Him to heal his son. In faith, he asks, Sir, come down before my child dies. Jesus says, You may go, your son will live. Believing in faith that his son was healed, the man left. He found out later that his son had been healed at the very moment Jesus had spoken.

Jesus wasnt afraid to get His hands dirty to heal the sick.

The Great Physician Is Not In The Bible

Many times I have heard people call Jesus the Great Physician.

In fact, the reason I bring this up is because in yesterdays post, I called Jesus that.

I consider myself someone who knows the Bible pretty well. I wont regale you with all Ive done to get to know the Book, but I know it pretty well.

I went over to Bible Gateway to do a search for the phrase Great Physician, because what an awesome way to end that post: with a fine verse about the Great Physician, our great Savior who can fix people!

Bible Gateway returned one verse for Great Physician, 2 Chronicles 16:12

And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians.

Hmm, thats weird, I thought. Maybe its a phrase a non-KJV version uses. I looked up the English Standard Version: 0 returns. New American Standard: 0 returns. And, Lord help me, I even searched the NIV: 0 returns.

I then went to my preferred search engine and typed in where does the phrase Great Physician come from? It was decidedly unhelpful. It came up with a bunch of links to pages about what Jesus thinks about doctors and people calling Jesus the Great Physician, but nobody would tell me where this title comes from.

Thats it. Certainly Jesus is comfortable with the metaphor, so I dont think theres any problem using it.

So, based on this, heres a theory:
