Church Of The Koimisis Tis Theotokou

Abide with Me ‘Tis Eventide

Foundations laid 1970

Initially a Methodist church in Brompton, it was purchased and converted into an Orthodox church to serve the needs of the very large number of Greek migrants in the surrounding areas.

The Church of Panagitsa, as it was commonly known, became a magnet and at its celebratory services drew thousands of pilgrims. Sadly, this church was destroyed by a fire, but soon a brand new church was built at its current location at Croydon. The commemoration of the Dormition of Our Lady Theotokos* draws thousands annually during the duration of the two day event on the 14th and 15th of August. St. Isidoros and St. Marcella, patron saints of Chios are also venerated at this church. *The meaning of Theotokos corresponds to the Mother of Jesus Christ known in English as Virgin Mary.

Tis The Season To Light The World

Things look a bit different this year. My first reaction was, Wait! Wheres my Light the World calendar? Im a planner, and promoting the Churchs Light the World initiative is part of my responsibility in my Church assignment. In the past, Ive done a fairly decent job keeping up with the daily calendar prompts and have been blessed by my participation.

The approach this year with Light the World mirrors the higher, holier approach that Church President Russell M. Nelson has been encouraging. It is along the same lines as the new For Strength of Youth announced in this past General Conference. We are given many wonderful suggestions of what we can do throughout the month, accompanied by the question of the season: Who needs your light today?

What a wonderful invitation to consider who does need my light and what will that light look like today? The list of suggestions range from simple and doable, like invite someone to go ahead of you in line, pray for someone by name, or send a text of gratitude to someone. Some might take a bit more planning take a walk with someone or make a meal with a family member.

If you want more inspiration and ideas, you can sign up for one of the Churchs official Light the World notification services below:

There is also this years new video which reminds us that Everyone needs your light!:

Don’t Miss: How To Read And Understand The Bible

Restoration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ

While Jesus Christ was on the earth, He established His Church. Following His death and the deaths of His Apostles, some of the precious truths He taught and His sacred authority were lost for a time.11 This time period is known as the Great Apostasy.

In the spring of 1820, a young man named Joseph Smith prayed to God with great concern for the salvation of his own soul and to know which church he should join. God and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph12 and began to prepare him to bring back the precious truths and the sacred authority that had been lost from the Church Jesus Christ formed while on the earth. Under the Lords direction, Joseph Smith organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 1830.

Through the power of God, Joseph Smith translated an ancient record written by prophets who lived on the American continents and taught and testified of Jesus Christ.13 This ancient record is called the Book of Mormon and stands alongside the Bible as another testament that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind.

Payson Temple Worker Removed From Position Over Natural Hair

Tis Eventide

He was reinstated after the grooming standard was clarified.

PAYSON A temple worker for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is speaking out after being removed from his position because of his hair. The situation was quickly righted, but Tekulve Jackson-Vann says this is a great opportunity to talk about how the faith can better incorporate members of many cultures.

Tekulve Jackson-Vann has been a temple worker at the Payson temple for almost two years. He knew that his decision to grow his hair into locs could be a problem, and he was right.

On Friday, he notified his temple supervisor of his hair change and was told, Your hair doesnt fit the guidelines. Were asked to have our hair in a conservative style so its not a distraction to the patrons. My first thought immediately was this is a moment, this is a moment where I can help educate my brethren in the gospel that there are standards which are not rooted in doctrine and that can be challenged.

Within 24 hours, the Payson Temple President was contacted by the Church Temple Department and the guidelines were clarified, allowing Jackson-Vann to resume his post.
