Bible Verses That Tell Us How To Fight Physical And Spiritual Wars

What Does The Bible Say About War?

There are so many Bible verses that talk about the horrors of war. It might be a spiritual or physical war, either of them, we have a lot to learn from the bible.

As believers, our lives are full of warfare from the kingdom of darkness that tries to stop us fulfill the will and purpose of God for our lives.

We must fight the good fight of faith as explained in 1 Timothy 6:12, which says, Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

We are at war with the increasingly evil forces today more than ever that are trying to stop us from living according to Gods word. The wars between nations against nations, kingdoms against kingdoms are affecting the existence of human beings today.

The Bible gives us the answers and insight on how to handle these things. Here are 15 Bible verses that will enlighten us about war:

1). Psalm 144:1

Blessed be the Lord, my rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle.

2). Psalm 18:39

For You have girded me with strength for battle You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.

3). Exodus 15:3

The Lord is a warrior The Lord is His name.

4). Numbers 10:9

When you go to war in your land against the adversary who attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, and be saved from your enemies.

5). Joshua 14:11

6). Joel 3:9

Scriptures For Recognizing Spiritual Warfare

1. Satans strategy is to destroy through intimidation and isolation. On the contrary, Gods purpose is to deploy through suffering and proclamation.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

2. God is the source of all good Satan, the author of evil.

When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone. James 1:13

3. The battle is real.

For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. Galatians 5:17

Dont be mistaken the picture we have of Satan isnt how he began.

Satan used to be the chief of all the angels who served at the side of God. He was the most beautiful and most knowledgeable angel the chief of the cherubs. But when he got caught up in his own beauty and decided he wanted Gods job, he led one third of the angels in rebellion against the Creator. Those angels are now called demons.

This is the Tempter against which you are fighting every single day, who is bombarding you with opportunities to hurt and condemn yourself and others.

Below are the truths to claim as you fight the spiritual battle being waged against you.

Ii The Role Of Government

The fall of man in Genesis chapter three warrants Gods ongoing need to restrain the ensuing evil in and from man. One of the primary means God has ordained to achieve restraint, stemming from His holy attribute of perfect justice, is the principle of just recompense. This principle was first illustrated in Genesis following the Fall. The pain of childbearing for the woman and the necessity of labor for mankinds survival illustrate the just cost of mans disobedience, i.e., a cost to be borne by mankind into his distant, physical future. Further, in Genesis 9:6 God institutionalizes capital punishment: Whoever sheds mans blood, by man his blood shall be shed. That is to say God will use corporate man as His surrogate to mete out His just recompense, in this case for murder. The due recompense for the premeditated murder of another man will be his death: corporeal punishment by corporate mankind. The concept presented is more fully excogitated in Romans 13:1 4. Scripture says in this regard:

Notice first of all that governing authorities are established by God for the purpose of, among others reasons, bearing the swordan avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil . This same idea is echoed by 1 Peter 2:1314:

Submit yourselves for the Lords sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.

The Dreadful Day Of The Lord Against The World

What does the Bible say about war?

Jesus Christ came to die for the world so that humankind can have salvation void of the penalty of sin being death .

In Christ Jesus, God intervened in the affairs of the world to conquer Satan and his sinful crafty schemes.

The second coming is going to be a day of purging the world of sin and all forms of unrighteousness.

Remember that the last days had begun Are you ready for the Lord?

Events of war, diseases and sickness, etc, are reminding us of the imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is truly coming to bring his kingdom to its victorious completion as the scriptures have recorded in Isaiah 2:2-4 Matthew 24:29-31 and 2 Peter 3:3-4.

War Can Be An Opportunity For God To Work

Finally, the Bible also teaches that war can be an opportunity for God to work in peoples lives. In the book of Isaiah, we read that God uses even the Babylonians a cruel and ruthless people to accomplish his purposes . And in the book of Revelation, we see that God will one day use even the forces of nature to defeat his enemies .

Some War Can Be Justifiable By Gods Word

While the Bible acknowledges that war is often a result of human sin, it also says that there can be such a thing as a just war. In the book of Exodus, God tells the Israelites that they are allowed to defend themselves against those who would do them harm . And in the book of Romans, Paul says that it is right for the government to use force to punish those who do evil .

God Established The Government To Punish Evildoers

In His mercy, He has established governing authorities to protect the law abiding citizens and to punish evildoers. The government should only be involved in its God-given realm of authority. Anything outside protecting the law abiding citizens and punishing evildoers is outside its realm and it has no business there.

9. 1 Peter 2:14 And to the governors, who have been appointed by him to punish the evildoers and to praise those who do good.

10. Psalm 68:30 Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.

11. Romans 13:1 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.

12. Romans 13:2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves.

13. Romans 13:3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.

14. Romans 13:4 because they are Gods servants working for your own good. But if you do evil, then be afraid of them, because their power to punish is real. They are Gods servants and carry out Gods punishment on those who do evil.

A Brief Examination Of Biblical Justifications For War

Bible End Times Prophecy: Wars and Rumors of War

Attempts to provide biblical warrants for Christian participation in warfare have long been offered by those who reject Christ-centered nonviolence. Some of the arguments that have frequently been offered in defense of Christians on the battlefield go back to the fourth century to Ambrose and Augustine. Below in bold type are brief statements of some of the more common biblical justifications for the Christians participation in war. Following each of them is a short response that indicates why the argument fails to make the intended case.

Jesus said that there must be war and rumors of war. Antiwar advocates are working for something that Jesus said would never exist before the Second Coming.

Actually Jesus didnt say there would always be wars. He said, When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed this must take place, but the end is still to come . He certainly doesnt suggest that war either should exist or that it is sanctioned by him. He makes a descriptive statement, not a prescriptive one. Working for peace and refusing to fight in wars in no way contradicts what Jesus says in this passage. Rather, to do so is to follow in his nonviolent steps.

How can it be claimed that Jesus opposed all violence? After all, he stated, I did not come to bring peace to the earth I did not come to bring peace but a sword .

V A Summary Of The Just War Theory

When the criteria are carefully and corporately reasoned and going to war is just and righteous, then a nation must engage with its full force, intense focus, and all-out power in a quest for immediate and decisive victory. In response to fulfillment of all the elements of the just war theory when going to war is just and righteous, what results can in no way be a half-hearted response! A nation cannot respond flaccidly with less-than-clear objectives!

Winston Churchill, when faced with the inevitability of engaging Nazi Germany, worked through and fulfilled all the above criteria with Parliament. Upon entering the war, he personally emulated this ensuing right spirit and resolvewhat necessarily must follow when justifiably and righteously a nation enters a war. In his address to Parliament in 1940 he declared the following:

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.2 You ask, what is our aim?Victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror victory, however long and hard the road may be for without victory, there is no survival.3

Next week: We will examine the Four Principles of Fighting a War and consider several opposing positions to the Just War Theory: Christian Pacifism and Noninterventionism. We will consider whether these are biblically tenable positions.

Bible Verses On Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:1011 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Commentary from the sermon Be Strong, Stand Firm by Alistair Begg:

Everyone who is transferred by grace from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light, everyone who becomes a citizen of Christs kingdom, is caught up in a cosmic conflict of eternal significance. Now, we know what it is to be involved in arguments and discussions and conflicts that will eventually peter out. But the battleground that were considering here in Ephesians 6 is a battleground of eternal matters. And these eternal matters are being worked out in everyday life.

The full armor of God, incidentally, is simply faith in the Gospel. To put on the full armor of God is not to sort of try and do things to ourselves or make things happen in order that we might be more acceptable and more effective. No, it is actually to take hold of that which has been given to us. Satan, you seewhat does Satan want us to abandon? He wants us to abandon righteousness. He wants us to abandon faith. He wants us to abandon the shoes of peace. He wants us to abandon the belt of truth. He wants us to abandon the Gospel.

Commentary from the sermon A Call to Battle by Alistair Begg:

The devil is not a solitary power. He has his agents, and he has his agencies.

Luke 11:4 Lead us not into temptation.
