Omnipotence And The Challenges Of Life

The Omnipotence of God: The Attributes of God with Steven Lawson

The power of God is to be trusted without reservation and without holding back for nothing is too hard for the Lord. With man, a thing may seem impossible, but that is not the case with God. The Lord witnessed the birth of Isaac when Abraham was a hundred years old. He also witnessed the birth of Jesus from a lowly virgin and the salvation of the rich, including you and me who may be neither rich nor poor. Nothing, including no prayer you utter to the Lord, is too hard for Him to answer, no sin is too vile for the Lord to forgive, and no misery is too deep for the Lord to bring the relief of His grace rushing into your life through the Holy Spirit.

  • The Omnipotence Omniscience And Omnipresence Of God

    Definition

The three omni attributes of God characterize him as all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere present. Each of these involves the other two, and each provides a perspective on the all-embracing lordship of the true God.

    Summary

Omnipotence means that God is in total control of himself and his creation. Omniscience means that he is the ultimate criterion of truth and falsity, so that his ideas are always true. Omnipresence means that since Gods power and knowledge extend to all parts of his creation, he himself is present everywhere. Together they define Gods lordship, and they yield a rich understanding of creation, providence, and salvation.

Oh Lord God You Yourself Made The Heavens And Earth By Your Great Power And With Your Outstretched Arm Nothing Is Too Difficult For You

    Omnipotence God

God created everything we see and a lot of things we dont see. How?

God said, Let there be, stretched out His arm , and made the heavens and earth. That was all He needed to do.

No, we dont know what happened next. Did things just appear out of nowhere? Was it more like a reverse-Avengers snap, and it drift together over an undetermined period of time?

Either way, the how of creation doesnt really matter. It is the Who that is important.

God did it. Only He could do it.

God did it His way. He did it from scratch. Nothing was partially started, and He just finished it up.

How Can God Do Anything If He Cannot Lie

Although this might seem like a contradiction, there is truly no conflict when we consider that God tells us in many places that He will not lie . We also understand that Gods character is unchanging. In 2 Timothy 2:13 we read that He cannot deny Himself. God is a rational being and He communicates with us to reveal His character.

If God were to do anything that violated His character, He would no longer be God. Since God has revealed that He is faithful and cannot lie, to tell a lie would make Him unfaithful. Rather than being a contradiction, this is actually an affirmation of the consistency and character of God. He can do anything that is consistent with His character. God has no desire to lie since lying is a .

    Omnipotent Definition And Synonyms

Omnipotent derives from the Latin Omnis meaning all and potens or powerful. Omnipotent is not a word used in the Bible, but almighty appears in virtually every book of the Old Testament, often dozens of times. El Shaddai, a Hebrew name for God, evokes His omnipotence as the Almighty. El Shaddai means God most powerful or God Almighty.

According to the King James Dictionary, omnipotent means “All-powerful all mighty.”

“And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God OMNIPOTENT reigneth.”

    God of the Mountains

Another possible meaning of El Shaddai is God of the mountains, according to BibleStudyTools.com. After leading Israel out of Egypt, Moses met El Shaddai on Mount Sinai in order to receive His commandments. This is perhaps why God of the Mountains is one definition for El Shaddai.

    Overpowerer

Another translation of Shaddai is Overpowerer. This evokes the notion of God the hero who overpowers Israels enemies.

Abigail, the wise wife of foolish Nabal, knew that God was with David. The Lord had famously favored and protected him since boyhood. When Nabal provoked David and nearly caused his family to be slaughtered, Abigail appeased David with reminders of Gods power and justice.

Abigail reminded David that a just God exerts His power to defeat Israels enemies, not to seek revenge. Abigails boldness paid off and her family was spared.

    God’s Omnipotence Reigns Over Nations

Several years ago, when ISIS first became known, I found myself growing increasingly anxious. Television broadcasts and my Facebook feed was filled with sensationalized articles and horrific pictures, all suggesting this terrorist group would soon dominate the world. Watching everything unfold, I allowed my fears to grow bigger than everything I knew to be true.

To regain my peace, I had to turn my television off, open my Bible, and re-center myself in Christ. As I did I was reminded that although groups like ISIS and all whod come before and would come after appeared invincible, they werent and never would be a match for Christ.

God created the nations, brought one to power and reduced another, and has consistently shown His sovereignty over world history. Consider the nation of Israel. They emerged from an infertile couple who left their homeland to follow God into the unknown This couple eventually had a child named Isaac who had a son named Jacob whose sons later became the twelve tribes of Israel.

When these people became oppressed by one of the most powerful nations in the ancient world, God liberated them through a series of miraculous plagues then swept their enemies into the Red Sea . Of this time, Scripture says, The Lord is a warrior the Lord is His name. Pharaohs chariots and His army He has hurled into the sea … Your right hand, O Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy .

What Is God Like?: Crash Course Philosophy #12

The term omnipotence refers to the idea that God is all-powerful. There are many stories in the Bible which reveal the power of God. An example of God’s omnipotence is found in Genesis chapter 1 that describes the creation of the world. It states how God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh.

    The Scope Of Omnipotence

The intelligibility of the notion of omnipotence has been challengedby the so-called paradox or riddle of the stone. Can an omnipotentagent, Jane, bring it about that there is a stone of some mass, \,which Jane cannot move? If the answer isyes, then there is a state of affairs that Jane cannotbring about, namely, that a stone of mass \moves. On the other hand, if the answer isno, then there is another state of affairs that Janecannot bring about, namely, that there is a stone of mass \which Jane cannot move. Thus, it seems thatwhether or not Jane can make the stone in question, there is somepossible state of affairs that an omnipotent agent cannot bring about. And this appears to be paradoxical.

A first resolution of the paradox comes into play when Jane is anessentially omnipotent agent. In that case, the state ofaffairs of Janes being non-omnipotent is impossible. Therefore,Jane cannot bring it about that she is not omnipotent. Since, necessarily, an omnipotent agent can move any stone, no matter howmassive, is impossible. But, as we have seen, an omnipotent agentis not required to be able to bring about an impossible state ofaffairs.

  • Power In Saving From Egypt

Here we see that God himself is powerful , that his voice is powerful , and that He acts powerfully both in creation , and also in salvation . Indeed, many of the references to Gods power in the Bible are linked with his might in saving Israel from Egypt:

    • Exodus 9:16: But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.
    • Exodus 14:31: Israel saw the great power that the LORD used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses.
    • Psalm 67:2: that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.

Therefore, while we see that God is completely powerful , Gods power is often expressed in relation to salvation firstly at the exodus , but also at the cross:

    • 1 Corinthians 1:23: But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
    • 1 Corinthians 1:18: For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Omnipotence And The Ministry Of Jesus

As God Incarnate, Jesus is all-powerful. The power of God in Jesus ministry is seen in the miracles He performed, and the feeding of the five thousand . Additionally, we see the power of God in Jesus ministry in calming the storm , and the ultimate display of power raising Lazarus and Jairuss daughter from the dead (John 11:38-44 , an example of His control over life and death.

Death is the ultimate reason that Jesus came to destroy it and to bring sinners into right relationship with the Lord God. The Lord Jesus clearly states in His ministry that He has the power to lay down His life and power to take it back up again. Jesus has the power to call upon twelve legions of angels to rescue Him if He needed it during His trial . Even so, Jesus offered Himself in humility in place of sinners .

The Incarnate God Is Jesus Christ

    Omnipotence God

In the same way, omnipotence can be seen represented as the incarnate God in Jesus Christ, who is omnipotent.

His power was seen in the miracles he performed, and in his many healings, in the feeding of the five thousand

âThen he took the five loaves and the two fish, and raising his eyes to heaven, blessed, and broke the loaves, and he gave his disciples to set them before them and he divided the two fish among all. And they all ate and were satisfied.

And they gathered twelve full baskets from the pieces, and what was left over from the fish. And those who ate were five thousandâ .

In the same way, the omnipotence of God in Jesus manifested that He had the power to lay down his life and to take it up again.

This is a fact that He narrated in an allegorical way when speaking about the temple.

âJesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then the Jews said:

In forty-six years this temple was built, and will you raise it up in three days? But he spoke of the temple of his bodyâ

    The Omnipotence Of God

When speaking of omnipotence, this word comes from âomnipotentâ which comes from the Latin âomnipotensâ which comes from âomniâ which means everything.

For its part, the word âpotensâ which means powerful, this means that it is all-powerful and refers to the attribute of having infinite or limitless power.

What Does It Mean That God Is Omnipotent

When one says God is omnipotent they are proclaiming that He not only has ultimate power over all things but He is also the source of all power. Though He sets limits on all of creation, He Himself is limitless in strength, wisdom, love, holiness, and the ability to perform His sovereign will.

He is the initiator of all that exists, the only uncaused entity in all of creation. Though His power is unfathomable, we can catch a glimpse of His might by considering all He has made. Colossians 1:16 says He made all thingsevery planet, beam of light, law of nature, and human heart.

Psalm 19:1-4 says, The heavens declare the glory of God the skies proclaim His craftsmanship. Day after day they pour fourth speech night after night they reveal knowledge. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

In other words, the universe reveals the awesomeness of God. He spoke, and trillions of galaxies burst forth, each containing billions of stars. Consider R136a1, the most massive and brightest star in the known universe. With a luminosity of 8,700,000 solar units, it is 8,700,000 more powerful than our sun. Now consider that our sun provides all of earths energy and burns at about 14 million degrees at its core.

Every solar unit and degree received its power from God and wouldnt exist if not for Him.

What Does Omniscient Mean In The Bible

    Asked by: Carolina Larson

Omniscience is the property of having complete or maximal knowledge. Along with omnipotence and perfect goodness, it is usually taken to be one of the central divine attributes. One source of the attribution of omniscience to God derives from the numerous biblical passages that ascribe vast knowledge to him.

Omnipotence And The Character Of God

God is All-Powerful: God’s Omnipotence with Pastor Allen Nolan

The Lord cannot act contrary to His holy revealed character in the Word of God. Numbers 23:19, Titus 1:2, and Hebrews 6:18 are critical biblical passages that demonstrate God cannot lie. God cannot lie because lying is contrary to moral perfection, and God is entirely holy . In the same way, despite being all-powerful and hating evil, the Lord allows evil to happen, according to His good purposes. The Lord even uses certain evil events to allow His purposes to unfold, such as when the greatest evil known to man happened- the killing of the perfect, holy, innocent Lamb of God for the redemption of humanity.

    What Does Omnipresent Mean

As a young girl, visiting a little street-corner church in Chicago, I heard a preacher quote Matthew 18:20: Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. It was a great promise, but it stirred up confusion and wonder in my heart: Is God with two or three in Chicago and two or three over in Chinaat the same time?

I had my first doubts about God based on my belief system of what I could see, feel and understand, rather than on what God tells us about Himself in scripture. Years later, when I became a Christ-follower and examined biblical concepts for myself, God opened my eyes of understanding. Though the word, omnipresence, doesnt appear in the Bible, the concept is clear in Matthew 18:20 and many other scriptures.

At college I discovered the prefix in the word omnipresent comes from Latinomni means all. A couple of other words in biblical studies refer to God with that same prefix. Omnipotent means all-powerful, and omniscient means all-knowing. Omnipresent is easy to define: all-present or present everywhere. That doesnt mean omnipresence is a simple concept.

    Omnipotence And Divine Moral Perfection

It has been argued that the traditional God has incompatibleattributes, namely, necessary existence, essential omnipotence, essential omniscience, and essential moral perfection . The contention has been that it is impossible for God to have thepower to bring about evil, while non-omnipotent beings may have this power. The precise form of such anargument varies depending on what precisely the relation between Godand evil is assumed to be. However, generally speaking, it is arguedthat divine moral perfection and omnipotence are incompatible becausedivine omnipotence entails that God has the power to bring about evil, whereas divine moral perfection entails that God is powerless to bringabout evil.

One can respond to arguments of this kind as follows. Assume that ifGod exists, then this is a best possible world. In that case, if God exists, there could not be an evil unless itwere necessary for some greater good, in which case any state ofaffairs containing evil incompatible with there being a maximally goodworld is impossible. But it be may be assumed that it is notpossible for any agent to bring about an impossible state ofaffairs. Thus, if God exists, any moral evil, that is, any evilbrought about by anyone, and any natural evil, or any evil which hasan impersonal, natural cause, must be necessary for some greatergood.

The foregoing line of reasoning implies that Gods moralperfection and omnipotence are not incompatible.
