What Does The Bible Say About Emotional Self Care

Faith & Fitness| What Does the Bible Say About Self-Love?

Emotional self-care is all about identifying your emotions, expressing them, and having techniques to cope. The bible is our manual for daily living and its full of coping mechanisms.

Our emotions can fool us. God wants us to bring our emotions to him. He wants us to be able to put those emotions up to the truth of his word and shine light on the deceit that often comes with the emotions we feel.

This next set of bible verses about taking care of yourself all speak to the emotions and our emotional health. They should encourage you to take stock of your emotions and direct them to the father in prayer or towards trusted Christian counselors should you need it.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22

If you have ever found yourself minimizing your emotions, or feeling as if they are too much to handle, this scripture about self care should be a huge encouragement for you! God knows that emotions can be hard to deal with. He knows that they can make you feel crushed. Emotions are hard. But our God is greater!

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Proverbs 14:30

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

Bible Verses About Self Worth

Often we put our self-worth in the type of clothes that we wear, the type of car that we drive, our accomplishments, our financial status, our relationship status, our talents, our appearance, etc. If you do this you will end up feeling broken and depressed.

You will feel like youre in shackles until you realize that Christ has set you free. Yes Christ has saved us from sin, but He has also saved us from the brokenness of having the worlds mindset.

Dont let sin take away your joy. Dont let the world take away your joy. The world will not take away your joy if your joy doesnt come from the world. Allow it to come from the perfect merit of Christ.

Christ is the answer to all self-worth issues that may arise in your life. You are more to God than you can ever imagine!

Quotes

  • Not one drop of my self-worth depends on your acceptance of me.
  • If you find yourself constantly trying to prove your worth to someone, you have already forgotten your value.
  • Your value doesnt decrease based on someones inability to see your worth.
  • Make sure you dont start seeing yourself through the eyes of those who dont value you. Know your worth even if they dont.
  • No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

God created man in His own image.

3. 2 Corinthians 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Setbacks bring down our self-esteem.

Loving Yourself Doesnt Mean:

  • Being selfish always putting yourself first and focussing solely on what you want.
  • Being self-indulgent doing what feels good, whenever you feel like it.
  • Treating yourself getting massages, pedicures, facials, or other pampering. Which, by the way, youre likely using to make yourself feel good and escape negative emotion.
  • Overlooking your faults which is usually to avoid feeling bad about yourself.

I mean, think about it: do you treat people who you say you love that way? If you do, is that honestly real love? No, it isnt. And if this is how youre currently loving yourself, then maybe you dont truly love yourself.

The Christians Call To Die To Self

For Christians, the Bible distinguishes between the old self and the new self . In a culture that prioritizes the self at all costs, the Bible teaches us to die to our old selves and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness . Because of Christs sacrifice for us, we are no longer bound to self-interest but can follow the call to deny and take up daily and follow . As Jesus said, whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it .

One danger of the self-love movement is that it may lead us to merely accept our old selves as they are, suppressing any desire for change. But God desires much more for us than this he desires our sanctification, our conforming to the likeness of Christ . It is only when we have died to our old selves and put on our new self that we are truly freed to love others. We love because he first loved us , not because we love ourselves first.

Be Confident In Faith

What does the Bible say about self

1 John 4:18

“Such love has no fear because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.”

Philippians 4:47

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

2 Corinthians 12:9

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christs power may rest on me.”

2 Timothy 2:1

“Timothy, my child, Christ Jesus is kind, and you must let him make you strong.”

2 Timothy 1:12

“Thats why I am suffering now. But I am not ashamed! I know the one I have faith in, and I am sure that he can guard until the last day what he has trusted me with.”

Isaiah 40:31

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

What Does The Bible Say About Love Loving First

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son. 1 John 4:10. Its great if someone loves me, and I love them in return. Thats easy. But that is not proof of love. God loved us before we loved Him, and we certainly did nothing to deserve that love. What if someone has treated me badly? Where is my love then? Love gives, and not only to those who are good to us. It loves its enemies it loves first. And it doesnt disappear if that love is never reciprocated. It endures all things.

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:44-45.

How Do You Put Christian Self

Once you know what bible verses talk about self-care, you can do better. With a better understanding of what God wants for us, we can begin putting these better self-care practices to work.

God desires for us to serve. He calls us to good works and and to bring glory to him! He desires that we come along side him and participate in the miracles he is working everyday. We are called to be his hands and feet on this earth. He also desires us to have a rhythm of work and rest. His word encourages us to take care of ourselves as well as taking care of others.

These bible verses about self-care are encouraging words from God to remind you that he desires you to be your best self. Being your best requires you to take time for yourself and you should not feel guilty about that!

You can use these scriptures for your personal bible study time!

  • Journal them
  • Write them out on note cards
  • Pray through them

Keeping these words of God in the forefront of your mind is key to creating a mindset that makes self-care a priority!

How are you planning to make self-care a priority in your life?

They Are Lovers Of Self

Self-absorbed people will look in the mirror and admire their outward beauty falling in love with themselves. They think theyre more special than others, or should be given special treatment. They may spend excessive amounts of time and money on their appearance to continue to get this treatment. They fantasize about having everything they want in life without restrictions or having to work for it.

Love Is Not Focused On Self

What Does The Bible Say About Self Love?

True love, Gods agape love is not focused on what we get out of it. It is focused on what we can give.

Do you remember the verse you learned in Sunday school? For God so loved the world that He gave This is true love. Love motivates you to give.

In my own life, I have had to learn this lesson the hard way. Early in my life I did not understand this and always looked at what I could get out of a situation or relationship. I was self-centered.

Later I changed this by going through the process in a couple of relationships of dying to self. It was not easy but it taught me not only how to love Gods way, but also understand greater the heart of love that Jesus has for us. I experienced the same pain and rejection that He did. Not to the same degree, but the same type.

It is easy to love when you get something in return, it is not so easy to love just because.

Do You Love Yourself Enough

Do you love yourself enough to stop denying that your sins, your faults, your inadequacies are as real as your virtues? Do you love yourself enough to stop scraping together self-worth from broken, sinful pieces of self, and instead to embrace the free gift of the Fathers love for Christs sake?

If the world really cared about helping us love ourselves, it would simply preach the gospel. Only the good news of Christ offers true hope. The message of the gospel is a message of freedom from efforts to love our broken selves by providing a worth that comes from outside of our brokenness a worth that comes from Christ.

Do you love yourself enough to accept that?

Did Jesus Say To Love Yourself First

Jesus simply said to love others as yourself. He didnt say to love others after you love yourself. Thats just something people read into the passage.

Let me illustrate another way you could read into this passage and be just as wrong: Imagine that I hate myself. Since Jesus said to love my neighbor as myself, does this mean I should hate my neighbor since I hate myself? After all, I am supposed to love my neighbor the same way I love myself.

When Jesus said to love your neighbor, he wasnt saying to love your neighbor after you love yourself. And he wasnt saying to hate your neighbor if you hate yourself.

He was simply saying to love other people.

Is Suicide Mentioned In The Bible

In the Bible, there are several prominent individuals who took their own life. Some consider the last act of Samson in Judges 16:26-31, where he pushed the pillars on top of the Philistines and himself to be a suicidal act. However, the argument can be made that He accepted his death as a consequence of obeying the Lord to destroy the Philistines, and not a suicide. There are six individuals who chose to end their own lives:

Abimalech was a king of Schechem who took power by murdering those who could challenge him. He took over the town of Thebez, but the citizens resisted. When he was struck on the head by a woman with a stone, he asked his armor-bearer to kill him with a sword so people could not say a woman killed him. Judges 9 has the whole account.

King Saul, first King of Israel, threw himself on his sword, and his armor bearer followed him in death, after his sons died and he lost a battle against the Philistines. After being wounded by an arrow, Saul asked his armor-bearer to kill him so the enemy could not capture him. His armor-bearer then fell on his sword as well. This account is in 1 Samuel 31.

King David had an advisor named Ahithophel. During the rebellion of Absalom, Davids eldest son, Ahithophel left Davids court to support Absalom. David sent a loyal friend to try and counter the wise counsel of Ahithophel. After Absalom rejected Ahithophels advice, he chose to commit suicide. His story is in 2 Samuel 16 and 17.

    Know What Brings You Joy

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

We are plagued with daily issues that often weigh us down and stifle our joy. A strong self-care practice is laughter and making time for things that bring you joy and speak life for your spirit. While there are many things that can weigh us down, I invite you to be intentional about incorporating practices that renew and restore your soul.

As you move forward serving in the areas God has called you to, renew your commitment to prioritizing self-care, surrendering your anxieties to God, and staying connected to God for renewed strength, energy, and direction.

What Does The Bible Say About How We Should Relate To People With Narcissism

    Timothy stated,

They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

A person with narcissistic traits has chameleon-type abilities to make anyone believe they have an honorable character. But behind closed doors, they can be hot-tempered, abusive, and deceptive, which needs to be avoided so you dont get entangled . They are compulsive liars and can easily fool even the most devout Christian to believe their charm and treachery while encouraging you to follow their ways.

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery, they deceive the minds of naive people.
