What Passage In The Bible Talks About Marriage

It Is Supposed To Last A Lifetime

What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?

In a culture of disposable everything it is surprising to discover that some things are supposed to last a lifetime. While the Bible implies this on the very first page, it was not a common belief within the Jewish community at the time of Jesus. In fact, this is one of the things that the disciples found most surprising about their Master. Jesus stated his view on the matter succinctly:

I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.

Matthew records the reaction of the disciples a group to which he himself belonged:

The disciples said to him, If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.

Clearly the disciples were not used to hearing this kind of talk about marriage! Divorce was remarkably common in the Roman world and also in the Jewish world in the time of Jesus. Josephus, a Roman Jewish historian and himself a divorced man wrote in The Antiquities Of The Jews that he believed that a man was permitted to divorce his wife for any reason whatsoever.

Thus the Christian view on the permanence of marriage represented a significant departure from the culture of the day. According to Jesus a marriage is supposed to last forever. The only exception he mentioned had to with sexual immorality a catch all phrase likely denoting any kind of sexual behaviour outside the bonds of covenant marriage.

I, not the Lord.

Bible Verses About The Beauty Of Marriage

These scriptures from the Holy Bible are faithful reminders of the power of love and marriage.

There’s a reason why even the most hard-hearted of us cry at weddings. Sure, some people who love everything having to do with parties may be moved by the use of amazing rustic wedding ideas and others say they’re just in it for the cake, but deep down, everyone can agree that it’s very moving when two people decide to devote their lives to one another. Marriage isn’t easy, so it’s important to keep some words of wisdom close at hand. Whether you’re looking for just the right wedding quote for a new couple’s wedding card, or a special love quote for him in your next anniversary card, you’ll be in good shape, because of plenty of people have opinions on the matter. We’ve also amassed 30 quotes from the Good Book that are all about marriage.

“So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

“Be completely humble and gentle be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

The Man Is The Head And The Woman A Helper

The world has changed a lot. We now have different ideas of how a marriage should be. In fact, it has been suggested that a marriage must be a 50:50 thing.

In other words, the husband and wife both make up the head of the family. But is this what the bible teaches?

God created a helper for the man. He created the woman to assist the man in all he does.

After the disobedience of Adam and Eve, God said unto the woman

I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception In sorrow shall thy bring forth children and they desire shall be unto thy husband, and he shall rule over thee

Genensis 3:16

Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ said

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is the man and the head of Christ is God.

1 Corinthians 11:3

God has set a laid down hierarchy for marriage. The man is the head of the woman, and similarly, Christ is the head of the man.

Paul repeated this message in his letter to the Christian at Ephesians. He said

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Ephesians 5:22-25

What Does The Bible Actually Say About Marriage

Professor of New Testament, Lancaster Theological Seminary

When you attend a wedding at church, what passages of Scripture do you expect to hear? Congregations occasionally invite me to speak on the current same-sex marriage debates, and I ask them this question. Their answers are remarkably consistent.

Someone invariably mentions 1 Corinthians 13, the famous “Love Chapter.” Love is patient, love is kind, love never insists on its own way and so forth. Wonderful advice for marriage, but Paul was not talking about marriage. He was addressing a church fight: the believers in Corinth had split into factions and were competing for prestige and influence. We see echoes of this conflict throughout the letter, but especially in chapters 12 and 14, which surround this passage.

Others call out, “Where you go, I will go where you lodge, I will lodge your people shall be my people, and your God my God” . Another moving passage, but it’s certainly not about marriage. Ruth addresses this moving speech to her mother-in-law Naomi.

Not a Lot to Say

So we know Jesus blessed marriage because he attended a wedding? That’s the best we can do? No wonder it’s common for couples to struggle over the choice of Scripture for their wedding ceremonies. The Bible just doesn’t have much to say on the topic.

Pin on GOD

As a Christian Counselor, I get many questions regarding what Gods intends in marriage and when is divorce an option. Before, looking at divorce allowances in Scripture, lets examine Gods plan for a marriage.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

Only the Lord is perfect in all of the above. Our capacity to reflect Gods perfect character traits of love, justice, and compassion is tainted by sin.

Adams sin caused the image of God to be broken beyond our ability to repair. Sin, in the Christian sense, is not just doing something wrong, it is an attack against the Lord God who is the sustainer of life in the cosmos. It is only through a miracle of God that we can repair the damage brought on by sin entering the world in Genesis 3.

That miracle occurred when the God sent His only Son to repair the damage by bearing the penalty upon Himself. Therefore, God demonstrated mercy and justice to us at the same time on the cross. Ephesians 4:24 and Colossians 3:10 conveys the truth that being covered by the blood of the Jesus and putting on the new self-enables us to pursue true righteousness and holiness.

Love One Another Maximizing Positive Affect

Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength . Dont you get the sense that this is meant to be total commitment and something that is obvious to others?

Jesus went on to say that the second commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. In other words, love obviously.

I have a cartoon that shows a woman asking her husband, Do you love me? He replies, I told you love you on the day we were married, if it changes Ill let you know. That man may love his wife, but hes not being obvious about it.

John Gottmans research shows that couples need to maximize the positive affect. In other words, the more the other person senses and knows that you love them, the better off you will be.

His research says that it takes five positive interactions to counteract every negative interaction. Healthy couples have the five-to-one ratio while unhealthy couples have closer to one-to-one ratios. Show your love in a way that your partner feels love.

This section of the eBook has passages organized into showing positive affect.

The Biblical Context Of Forgiveness In Marriage

Although it has happened for the first time, Joy cannot forgive him for what he did. He is remorseful, but Joy is not able to get over the pain of infidelity.

She has tried to visit all the her. Her husband does not see it as an issue.

She has gone back to her parents time and again, but the man keeps coming back, asking for forgiveness.

Joy believes that her husband is cheating on her again. But, she doesnt have any tangible proof to affirm her belief.

As a Christian wife, she is in a catch 22 situation. She no longer knows what the Bible says about forgiveness. She is caught in between forgiveness and the act of infidelity.

It Is About Friendship First And Foremost

Thats the immediate need that marriage was created to address in Genesis 2. The text says:

Then the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone I will make him a helper fit for him.

It is not good for the man to be alone therefore God invented marriage.

The sort of friendship that God had in mind is indicated through the use of an often misunderstood phrase: a helper fit for him.

The Hebrew word in question carries the idea of complementarity. It does not imply inferiority. In fact, the Book of Hosea uses this word to God in relationship with Israel. Hosea 13:9 says:

He destroys you, O Israel, for you are against me, against your helper.

Here God describes himself as Israels helper his ezer clearly then the helper is no way inferior to one who is helped that is not what the word is communicating. Rather it appears to be communicating intimate correspondence. God is the helper that corresponds perfectly to our need as human beings just as Eve was the helper that corresponded perfectly to Adams need as a human being.

That is the sort of friendship that is being pictured here.

It is a friendship of co-equal others.

Understanding this puts to bed two lies that our culture would press upon us. The first is the lie that men and women must be understood as being the same in order to be understood as being equal.

But that clearly isnt the case.

Genesis 1:27 states plainly that the man and the woman are co-equal in value and dignity:

    No it isnt.
