The Epigraphical & Archeological Evidence For King David
As with his successor, King Solomon, little evidence has been uncovered to prove the historical existence of King David however, recently discovered direct and indirect evidence provides greater substantiation for David’s life and kingship . In 1993 CE, Avraham Biran discovered the Tel Dan Inscription on a broken stele in northern Israel. The inscription commemorates the victory of an Aramean king over its southern neighbors, and specifically references both the king of Israel, and the king of the House of David. This is perhaps the earliest, direct, historical evidence for the Davidic Dynasty in Israel although the Mesha Stele, discovered by Bedouins in the 1800s CE who lived by the Jordan and Arnon rivers, also mentions “the House of David,” written in Moabite around a century after the supposed reign of King David.

What Were The Consequences Of David’s Actions
There is no getting around the fact thateven though David was a man after Gods own heart he abused his power and dishonored Gods law.
Before his encounter with Bathsheba, Davids arc went from achievement to achievement. He slew beasts, defeated Goliath, was heralded by the people in song as a mighty warrior , and became King of all Israel and Judah. After his transgression, however, his life was fraught with pain and betrayal. David and Bathshebas son died. His daughter, Tamar, was raped by Davids son, Amnon, who was then murdered by her brother, Absalom. Absalom betrayed David and went after the kingship in a stunning coup détat. Absalom also raped his father David’s concubines and expelled David to exile. David is eventually restored but is bitter and left instructions with Solomon to exact revenge on his enemies. Even after his death, Adonijah, another son, is murdered in the conflict for succession.
The fourfold restoration reference may be in allusion to the ensuing deaths of Davids four sons: , Amnon , Absalom , and Adonijah .
Also, it is a possible allusion to four disasters that marked the final years of Davids reign: Tamar being raped by her brother, Amnon and Amnons death at the hands of his brother, Absalom , Absaloms traitorous rebellion and his death by Joab , Shebas rebellion and the plague which followed Davids census , and Adonijahs conspiracy to clutch the throne, which endangered Solomons and Bathshebas lives .
Who Is Goliath In The Bible
Goliath is depicted in the biblical Book of Samuel as a Philistine giant who was vanquished in a single fight by the child David. He is characterized as a champion from the Philistine camp, whose height was six cubits and a span .
The Philistines had come up to fight Saul, and this warrior came out day after day to challenge him to a single battle. Only David dared to react, and with a sling and stones, he defeated Goliath.

David Plotted To Have Uriah Killed
David killed a lot of people in battle. He killed a lot of prisoners after battles. And he executed plenty of criminals. But one killing in particular displeased the Lord . When David couldnt get Uriah to sleep with his wife Bathsheba , he plotted to have Uriah killed in combat.
In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.
So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in Davids army fell moreover, Uriah the Hittite died. 2 Samuel 11:14-17
In order to have Uriah killed in battle, Joab had to sacrifice some of Davids other men, and Joab feared David would be angry for the waste . But David was rather indifferent. He told Joabs messenger:
Say this to Joab: Dont let this upset you the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it. Say this to encourage Joab. 2 Samuel 11:25
The lives of Gods people were simply collateral damage in Davids effort to cover up his sin.
Once Uriah was dead and Bathsheba had time to mourn him, David married her, and she gave birth to a son.
David committed a grave sin. But after his encounter with Nathan, David wrote Psalm 51, which reflects his humility and sincere repentance for what hed done.

David The Shepherd Boy
Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years. The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul, but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
David Committed Adultery With Bathsheba
When his armies were out waging war without him, David walked along the roof of his palace and saw a beautiful woman bathing. He sent someone to find out about her, and learned she was married to Uriah the Hittiteone of his best soldiers .
Now, this was hundreds of years before Jesus said looking at a woman lustfully was committing adultery in your heart , but at this point it was pretty clear to David that this was not a relationship he could pursue. The Torah had a thing or two to say about adultery , and it was punishable by death .
David knew all that, but he sent for her anyways, slept with her, and got her pregnant . When David learned she was pregnant, he hatched a scheme to hide his sin: since her husband Uriah was away at war, David had him brought back home. If Uriah slept with her, then no one could say he was the one who got her pregnant.
But it didnt work out that way. After Davids repeated attempts to get Uriah to spend time with his wife, Uriah told him:
The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my commander Joab and my lords men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing! 2 Samuel 11:11
So, to hide his sin, David committed another one.

David Was Israels Greatest King
Despite being anointed to rule Gods people, David had a long and arduous path to kingship. Even after Saul died in combat, those loyal to him werent just going to hand over the kingdom to David. Remember, Saul was anointed, too. And David had been living with and fighting for the Philistinesthe Israelites sworn enemies.
When Saul died, the tribe of Judah anointed David as their king , but Abner son of Ner, the commander of Sauls army, made Sauls son Ish-bosheth king over all Israel. So there were two kings and two kingdoms: Ish-bosheth became the second king of Israel, and David ruled Judah.
Unfortunately for Ish-bosheth, his reign was short-lived. And while he and Abner were at war with David the whole time he was in power, Ish-bosheth didnt die by Davids hand.
Both Ish-bosheth and Abner were murdered. Abner was murdered out of revenge, and David cursed his killers and mourned his death. Ish-bosheth was murdered by Israelites who seemed to be trying to earn Davids favor. When they came to David with their good news, he had them executed for their crime.
With Sauls family out of the picture, Israels elders met with David and anointed him king over all of Israel when he was thirty years old .
During Sauls reign, Jerusalem was captured, and the Ark of the Covenant was in Judah. When David became king, he retook the fortress of Zion , conquered Jerusalem, and returned the Ark to the city.
A Summary And Analysis Of The David And Goliath Story
The story of David and Goliath is one of the most iconic and celebrated tales from the Old Testament. Virtually everyone vaguely acquainted with Bible stories knows that David, as a young boy, slew the giant Goliath. The story is an inspiring example of how the plucky underdog could defeat someone much bigger than him, against the odds.
Except, there are two problems with this story, a story that virtually everyone knows. First, was it actually David who slew Goliath? And second, and perhaps even more intriguingly: was David really the underdog in that fight?

The account of Davids fight with Goliath is found in 1 Samuel 17. The Israelites were getting ready for a battle against the Philistines, a valley separating the two armies, each of which stood ready on a mountain. Goliath, the champion of the Philistines, was a giant of over nine feet in height, wearing armour and carrying a huge spear. Every day he walked out to the Israelite army and challenged them to send forward one Israelite to fight him in single combat, to settle the issue and decide the winner. If Goliath beat the Israelite, the Philistines would win, but if the Israelite champion was victorious, the Israelites would win.

What Does The Story Of David Teach Us
David is chosen to be king because he has what Saul does not: a heart for God. Davids heart for God prepares him to be used by God. Our impressive resumes arent what make us useful in Gods kingdom. The first lesson we learn from Davids life is the importance of cultivating a heart for God above all else.

Joseph was the first sonof Jacob and Rachel. His name has to do with Rachels desire for God to give her one more son. His mother died giving birth to Benjamin in Canaan, where Joseph grew up.
When Joseph was a young boy of 17, his father made him a tunic of many colors. Your brothers, seeing their fathers favoritism, became envious of their fathers envy. On the other hand, Joseph had a special gift: his dreams revealed future events to him. This caused the hatred of his siblings to grow even more.
Eventually his brothers sold him into slavery to some merchants and stained his tunic with blood, making his father believe that an animal had killed Joseph. These merchants he was taken to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. A great friendship developed between Joseph and Potiphar until Potiphars wife wanted to seduce Joseph. He did not succeed in getting me to fall into Gods sin and out of spite accused Joseph of trying to abuse her.
With Gods help, Joseph explained Pharaohs dreams, which revealed that there would be seven years of incredible abundance followed by seven years of terrible scarcity. Pharaoh then appointed Joseph as the second governor to be in charge of storeprovisions for the time of scarcity.
Why Did David Fight Goliath
If youve ever wondered why David fought Goliath, youre not alone. In fact, its hard to believe that anyone has survived a battle with a gigantic beast, but the story of Goliath reveals that it is possible. The story begins with the giant taunting King Saul, challenging his people to fight him. No one was willing to take on the challenge before David. His faith was born out of the experience of Gods grace.
The Israelites feared Goliath and were scared to face him. However, the shepherd-boy David accepted the challenge and prepared himself for the encounter. He had a sling, a shepherds bag, and five smooth stones from a nearby brook. The battle started, and when Goliath was approaching the young boy, he cursed the boy, calling upon his gods. Despite the fact that Davids father had cursed him, he had faith in God and began to attack.
Goliath was a 6-foot-9 Philistine warrior who weighed about 70 pounds. The Israelites feared Goliath because he was a giant. The giant was a threat to the Israelites and their way of life. King Saul promised a reward for killing him, and the young shepherd refused. His one blow to Goliath killed him. The story shows that God is real and that David fought to protect his people.

Why Is King David So Important
