Women Sex And Law In Surrounding Cultures
Almost all Near Eastern societies of the Bronze Age and Axial Age were patriarchal with patriarchy established in most by 3000 BCE.:xxxii Eastern societies such as the Akkadians, Hittites, Assyrians and Persians relegated women to an inferior and subordinate position. There are very few exceptions, but one can be found in the third millennium B.C. with the Sumerians who accorded women a position which was almost equal to that of men. However, by the second millennium, the rights and status of women were reduced.:42:45
In the West, the status of Egyptian women was high, and their legal rights approached equality with men throughout the last three millennia B.C.:56 A few women even ruled as pharaohs.:7 However, historian Sarah Pomeroy explains that even in those ancient patriarchal societies where a woman could occasionally become queen, her position did not empower her female subjects.:x
Classics scholar Bonnie MacLachlan writes that Greece and Rome were patriarchal cultures.:vi
Rome was heavily influenced by Greek thought.:248 Sarah Pomeroy says never did Roman society encourage women to engage in the same activities as men of the same social class.:xv In The World of Odysseus, classical scholar Moses Finley says: There is no mistaking the fact that Homer fully reveals what remained true for the whole of antiquity: that women were held to be naturally inferior:16

It can be easy to read the Bible and only see the stories of the amazing menAbraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Elijah and Elisha. David and Solomon. Peter and James and John. Female Sexuality In The Early Church
The sexual-ethical structures of Roman society were built on status, and sexual modesty and shame meant something different for men than it did for women, and for the well-born than it did for the poor, and for the free citizen than it did for the slave.:7 In the Roman Empire, shame was a social concept that was always mediated by gender and status. Classics Professor Rebecca Langlands explains: “It was not enough that a wife merely regulate her sexual behavior in the accepted ways it was required that her virtue in this area be conspicuous.”:10,38 Younger says men, on the other hand, were allowed live-in mistresses called pallake. Roman society did not believe slaves had an inner ethical life or any sense of shame, since they had no status, therefore concepts of sexual morality were not applicable to slaves.:8486,88 Langlands points out this value system permitted Roman society to find both a husband’s control of a wife’s sexual behavior a matter of intense importance, and at the same time, see the husband’s sex with young slave boys as of little concern.:12,20
Women In The Bible: Eve

What Is A Womans Role In The Bible
A quick look around the world today, allows us to see women filling a variety of roles: mothers, daughters, wives, judges, teachers, missionaries, lawyers, corporate leaders, journalists, and more. In the Bible, we find variety in roles women fill as well.
We read about women like Deborah, who held the valued and highly respected position of judge in Israel. As a result of her decisions, the Israelites experienced peace for 40 years. We find brave ones like Rahab who landed in the lineage of Jesus even though her checkered past might have caused many to cast her aside. Also included in the Bible are Hannah, a mother who offered her son for the sake of the Almighty, Anna, a prophetess and one of the first to see the Messiah, Mary, the young mother who carried the hope of the world in her womb, Rhoda, the servant who was first to see Peter after his miraculous release from prison, and Phoebe, a faithful servant in the church. All these women filled different yet important roles.

Sarah: Mother Of The Jewish Nation
Sarah received an extraordinary honor from God. As Abraham‘s wife, her offspring became the nation of Israel, which produced Jesus Christ, Savior of the world. Esther: Influential Persian Queen
Esther saved the Jewish people from destruction, protecting the line of the future Savior, Jesus Christ. She was selected in a beauty pageant to become queen to the Persian King Xerxes. However, a wicked court official, Haman, plotted to have all the Jews murdered.
Esther’s uncle Mordecai convinced her to approach the king and tell him the truth. The tables quickly turned when Haman was hanged on the gallows meant for Mordecai. The royal order was overridden, and Mordecai won Haman’s job. Esther stepped out in courage, proving God can save his people even when the odds seem impossible.

Mary was a touching example in the Bible of total surrender to the will of God. An angel told her she would become the mother of the Savior, through the Holy Spirit. Despite the potential shame, she submitted and gave birth to Jesus. She and Joseph married, serving as parents to the Son of God.
During her life, Mary bore much sorrow, including watching her son crucified on Calvary. But she also saw him raised from the dead. Mary is revered as a loving influence on Jesus, a devoted servant who honored God by saying “yes.”

Summoned By Name: A Look At Four Nameless Women In The Bible
We all have one. From the moment we took our first breath and were swaddled in our mothers arms, we were given a name. An identity. Our name captures the uniqueness and individuality of who we are as people created in the image of an amazing God. Names in the Bible have always had powerful and significant meanings. We greatly admire the heroes of our faith who lived up to their extraordinary names.
People like Samuel , Abraham , Sarah , or Ruth .
Many of these men and women of God left an astounding legacy of faith for us to follow. But what about those in Scripture whose names are not mentioned? What lessons can we learn from their lives?
This week I am launching a new series featuring four women whose names are not mentioned in the Bible, but left an eternal impression on the hearts of many.
We may not know their names, but they were never overlooked by our Savior. He knew each of their unique stories, just as He knows each of us intimately, and affectionately calls us His beloved.
Our first stop this week is to Jacobs well in Samaria.
The scene opens with Jesus sitting beside a well.
Enter the Samaritan woman.
As she approaches the well to draw water, Jesus asks a head-turning question:
Will you give me a drink?
Jesus knows this woman by name. But to her, he is a complete stranger. Not only was he a stranger, she realized that he was a Jewish man, which made her wonder why he spoke to her at all.
She was seen.
Rachel: Wife Of Jacob And Mother Of Joseph
Rachel became the wife of Jacob, but only after her father Laban had deceived Jacob into marrying Rachel’s sister Leah first. Jacob favored Rachel because she was prettier. Rachel’s sons became heads of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Joseph had the most influence, saving Israel during a famine. Benjamin’s tribe produced the apostle Paul, the greatest missionary of ancient times. The love between Rachel and Jacob serves as an example to married couples of God’s abiding blessings.

Rachel is the wife to Jacob and was chosen by God to be the mother of Joseph, one of the most important figures in the Bible. Her story teaches us about faithfulness and waiting on the Lord.
Rachel is one of the most well-known women of the Bible. She is known for her beauty, her kindness, and her loyalty.
She was a devoted wife and mother, and she was fiercely protective of her family.
Rachels story is one of tragedy and loss, but also of hope and redemption.
After years of living with her husband and her fathers family, she is able to return with her husband and children to his homeland. Although we dont know much about her death, Rachels legacy lives on through her two sons Joseph and Benjamin.
Her story is an inspiration to all who read it, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.
Women In The Bible: Mary Mother Of Jesus
She is often portrayed as a meek and submissive figure, but Mary was a strong and courageous woman who made a difficult choice.
When she was visited by the angel Gabriel, Mary was told that she would give birth to the Son of God.
She could have chosen to ignore the angels words, but instead she chose to believe.
This act of faith led Mary on a journey that would change her life forever.
Despite the challenges she faced, Mary remained devoted to her son and his mission. In doing so, she became an inspiration to all who follow her example of faith.
