In this story of the birth of Isaac, whose day did Abraham expect to see? It was the day of Isaac according to the promise of God. However, in the verse above, Jesus said what Abraham expected to see was His day, that is, the day of Jesus himself. Through this teaching of Christ, we can know the only son of Abraham was a prophecy to teach the coming of Jesus, the Only Son of God Himself. Therefore, Isaac, the son of Abraham actually represents Jesus, the Son of God and the Age of Son.

Isaac was Abraham’s son that he bore from his wife Sarah. God had promised him a son through this line, but he’d gotten impatient when years passed and nothing happened. Verses 2, 8. The Joseph Smith Translation account records that the servant put his hand under the hand, rather than the thigh, of Abraham. The gesture seems to have been a token of the covenant being made between the two men, perhaps similar to our shaking hands.

Verses 12â14. These verses show that the servant, like Abraham, was a man of great faith. Abraham had told him that his errand was a commandment of the Lord . Verse 19. Considering the capacity of a thirsty camel, one can well imagine how much effort it took for Rebekah to draw water by hand for ten camels. Not only was she beautiful but she was a willing worker and was quick to serve.

âBecause he had met the Lord and entered into covenants with him there, Jacob considered the site so sacred that he named the place Bethel, a contraction of Beth-Elohim, which means literally âthe House of the Lord.â He said of it: â⦠this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.â

In contrast to Esau, who is described as a âcunning hunter,â Jacob is called a âplain manâ . The Hebrew word used there means âwhole, complete, or perfect,â so it is a very positive adjective.

The loved of verse 28 is used in the sense of âfavoredâ or âpreferred.â Thus, Isaac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob.

The Comfort Of The Cross

Most people arent disturbed by the outcome of Genesis 22. Instead, its the fact that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son in the first place. How could Abraham agree? This seems more like parental neglect than faithful obedience.

But remember what weve covered so far. If Isaac represents Jesus in the story, then Abraham stands in for God.

From that angle, Abrahams willingness is comforting. This is the point that Paul makes when he draws language from Genesis 22 to ask, He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all, will he not also with him graciously give us all things? .

On the grounds of this sacrifice, Paul pronounces one of the strongest messages of hope and consolation in all of Scripture,

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord .

It is interesting that both Rachel and Leah agreed that Jacob was justified in leaving Laban. They also pointed out that they had received nothing from their father, because of his covetous nature. One commentator explained their bitterness:

âThe dowry was an important part of marriage. We meet it first in Jacob, who worked seven years for Laban to earn a dowry for Rachel . The pay for this service belonged to the bride as her dowry, and Rachel and Leah could indignantly speak of themselves as having been âsoldâ by their father, because he had withheld from them their dowry . It was the family capital; it represented the wifeâs security, in case of divorce where the husband was at fault. If she were at fault, she forfeited it. She could not alienate it from her children. There are indications that the normal dowry was about three yearsâ wages. The dowry thus represented funds provided by the father of the groom, or by the groom through work, used to further the economic life of the new family. If the father of the bride added to this, it was his privilege, and customary, but the basic dowry was from the groom or his family. The dowry was thus the fatherâs blessing on his sonâs marriage, or a test of the young manâs character in working for it.â

How A Wife Was Chosen For Isaac

Abraham sends his servant to his relatives in Mesopotamia to find a wife for his son Isaac. Yahweh provides the servant with a sign by sending Rebekah to give him and his ten camels water to drink. Rebekah is brought from her family to Isaac, who finds comfort in her after the death of his mother Sarah.

What Happened To Isaac

Isaac went on to live a life of faith even after his encounter with God on the mountain top, though by no means did he live a perfect life. When the time came for Isaac to marry, Abraham sent his servant back to his homeland so he would not marry a Canaanite. Abraham was from the land of Ur in Mesopotamia, and he travelled to Canaan because God told him to do so. ;This servant brought back Rebekah, …and she became his wife and he loved her .

They appeared to have a loving relationship for quite some time, but some problems arose in their parenting. They had twin boys, Jacob and Esau, who were very different boys. Esau was the older, described as a skilled hunter, an outdoorsman, and hairy. Jacob preferred to stay closer to home, help his mother, and dwelled in the tents. The Bible says, Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob . The overt favoritism each parent played led to division between one another and between the brothers.

Eventually, Jacob fled back to his grandfathers homeland and lived with his sisters brother Laban for many years, working to marry Labans daughter Rachel. He wound up married to both Rachel and her sister Lea. Eventually Jacob returned to Canaan, and made peace with his brother, but not until he wrestled God in the wilderness.

God still had a plan for both Ishmael and Isaac. But because Abraham in the Bible chose to disobey God, Abraham’s sons reaped the consequences. Drama ensued in their family and tore them apart. Abraham’s sons show us that we must trust in God’s promises and not try to force them on our own.
