First Steps September 5 2022

I had lunch with a family member the other day and this person said they are reading the Bible, from cover to cover, for the first time. This is the first attempt in reading the entire Bible. After our lunch, I thought of St. Augustines love for the scriptures. He wrote: To be a student of the Bible you need to read it. Even if you cant understand all of it, you will do well to read all of it. Get to know these books. Memorize a few passages. Become familiar with Holy Scripture. Once you know what is between the covers of the Bible, you can begin to study it more intelligently. Important teachings regarding faith and living are clear first lessons. This light will eventually help illuminate the more difficult parts. The things you are sure about will help you with the things that seem uncertaincomparing various translations can make a difficult verse easier to understand. One may be explained by the other. Both may contain something valuable to a careful reader. Faith is the most important ingredient in Bible study. Someone said, If you dont believe, you wont understand. .The North African Bishop is correct. To understand it, we must read it. There is no equivalent substitute. The more we become familiar with the scriptures, the greater our understanding. Be a student of the Bible.

Don’t Miss: Does The Bible Say We Are All Created Equal

Justification And New Birth

In spite of suffering, violence, and evil, we assert that Gods grace is present everywhere. Despite our brokenness, we remain creatures brought into being by a just and merciful God. The reign of God is both a present and a future reality.

God summons us to repentance, pardons us, receives us by grace given to us in Jesus Christ and gives us hope of life eternal.

In justification we are, through faith, forgiven our sins and restored to Gods favor. This process of justification and new birth is often referred to as conversion. Such a change may be sudden and dramatic, or gradual and cumulative. In either case it marks a new beginning, yet it is also part of an ongoing process.

We believe God reaches out to the repentant believer in justifying grace with accepting and pardoning love.

Founded in 1869, St. Paul was the first congregation in the city of Birmingham .

St. Paul played a significant role in the movement for the non-violent social change for blacks in Alabama. Rebirth of NAACP in Birmingham came out of this church with the work of Dr. Charles McPherson in the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1956, leaders met at the church to discuss the campaign to integrate buses. Later, the church hosted training sessions on nonviolent civil disobedience in advance of the 1963 marches and on Palm Sunday 1963, the church hosted the mass rally and march to City Hall.

In the 1960s St. Paul continued to play a significant role in the movement. The churchs pastor in 1963 was the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery, was one of the co-founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference along with Dr. King.

From early days of freedom from slavery through the current days, St. Paul Methodist has remained an active congregation of worship, spiritual nurture and community engagement.
