CNA, Jonah McKeown: Several parishes in Kansas City, Missouri, are set to host traveling relics of St. Anthony of Padua this weekend and one of the parishes will get the privilege of keeping one of the relics of the famed Franciscan.

St. Anthony Parish in the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood of Kansas City is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Father Andres Moreno, the churchs pastor, told CNA that several months ago he asked the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua, Italy, if their parish community could keep one of St. Anthonys relics in honor of their anniversary, and the basilica agreed. Report is here.

Why Ad Orientem

1) To help us go towards the Lord together.

On First Fridays and every time we have exposition/adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, notice that the priest is always facing the Eucharist in front of the altar. Its something quite beautiful: The whole community, including the priest, deacon and servers, are all together looking towards Jesus and going toward Him. Adoration is hugely popular among young people and many have conversions when they adore the Blessed Sacrament when everyones adoring Jesus, its a kind of encounter with Him. Similarly, facing East during Mass will become a kind of encounter for everyone.

2) To remind us that God is transcendent and beyond us.

There are two ideas that we always have to keep in mind as Christians: that God is transcendent , and that God is immanent . Whenever we celebrate Mass facing the same direction, it reminds us that God is beyond our world and were looking towards something heavenly. One of the reasons why, after Vatican Council II, the priest faced the people is because it was focusing on the fact that God is present right here, when everyone surrounds the altar facing Him. But, weve lost the sense that God is majestic and heavenly, and the awe and wonder of the One who comes to us. So we need both: We need to remember that Jesus is among us but also beyond us.

3) To show us when the priest is speaking to God or to the people.
