What Percentage Of Christians Participate In Tithing

What does the Bible say about giving

Today, most Christians donât tithe. Consider these statistics. According to State of the Plate, only 10â25 percent of church members tithe. Only 5 percent of the United States population particcaptes in tithing. On average, Christians give 2.5 percent of their income, which is down from the 3.3 percent given during the Great Depression.

There are more stats I can share, but I think you get the point. Giving in the Church is on a downward trend regardless of what we might think about tithing in the bible.

For you, hereâs the deal. When you place your faith in Christ, you willâin timeâbe transformed into a giver.

This doesnât mean you’ll always be in a position to give 10 percent of your income. But it does mean that through faith in Christ, you will be empowered to be generous with what you have.

Let me ask you this. Do you desire to tithe? Whatâs holding you back?

Depending on your situation, there are several reasons why you may not be able to give to your church.

You may:

  • Be growing in your faith in Christ
  • Not know why you should give
  • Not be sure how to give to your church

Regardless of what you believe about tithingâChrist is calling you to a generous life.

As you offer your life as a living sacrifice to Christ, review Bible verses about money and stewardship. Prayerfully consider whatâs holding you back. Seek help from a friend or a financial advisor. And by the grace of God, strive to live the generous life God has given us and called you to live.

The Seed Or Offerings

As mentioned, offerings differ from tithes. Unlike tithing, which has a required amount of how much you should give, offerings are more of a free will. Its up to you how much seed you want to give. Although the more you give, the more you will receive. Think of it as the more seeds you sow, the more plants you can harvest. So where should you give your offerings or plant your seed? The Bible says that the source of your spiritual food should receive your offerings.

Bible Verses About Contentment

Philippians 4:11-13 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

1 Timothy 6:6-12 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

2 Cor. 12:9-10And He has said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weaknessTherefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christs sake for when I am weak, then I am strong.

God Does Bless People With More Than Enough

We must never give because we think God will give us more. No! This should not be the reason behind our giving. Often giving requires us to live beneath our means. However, I noticed that God does indeed keep those with a generous heart financially secure because they are trusting Him with their finances. Also, God does bless people with the talent of giving. He gives them a desire to freely give and He blesses them with more than enough to help those in need.

Teaching Children The Power Of Generosity

What Does the Bible Say About Giving to the Church?

As Christians, our spiritual health is greatly impacted by why and how we give. We know that all that we have belongs to God. We also know of our responsibilities to offer what we have for the promotion of Christs Kingdom.

Teaching our children to prayerfully give, to sacrificially give, and to give for the glory of God is a very important lesson.

When sharing these verses, try challenging them to demonstrate their message in their everyday activities. How can they be more selfless? Ask them: What kinds of ways do they see others demonstrating generosity through Christ?Once you see them recognizing opportunities to give, discuss other peoples wants and needs with them. Help them to understand the difference and why God wants us to help meet the needs of those less fortunate than us.

When your lessons are over, look for new ways to encourage giving in your home. Remind them that giving involves more than money or material items. It can include friendship and time, and many other kinds of activities. Faithfully planting these seeds now will allow the Lord to work in your children. And, in time, you will see that He has helped them grow a cheerful, giving heart.

What Are Offerings In The Bible

When you study the Bible, âofferingsâ are a bit more nuanced than âtithing.â Actually, what you think about âofferingsâ is largely based on what you believe about âtithing.â An offering is a financial gift you make to your church that is more than your tithe . For example, if you give 10 percent of your annual income to your local church, then an offering is any money you donate that exceeds this amount.

Do you believe Christians are called to live generously?

Then an offering is a financial gift you make to your local churchâregardless of the amount you give. Basically, âofferingâ is what you call giving to your church.

These two nuances arenât perfect.

But if you search online for tithing, then youâll see that this is the way many church leaders talk about giving.

Thereâs one more thing you need to know about offerings:

God also calls you to offer yourself as a living sacrifice to him.

Check out these words from Paul:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to Godâthis is your true and proper worship” .

To offer yourself as a living sacrifice to God is to offer yourself entirely to him.

Offering your life to God isnât something you do one time at the altar or on the days you feel good. Living sacrificially for God is something he calls everyone to do every day.

Practically speaking, Paul explains what this means in the next verse in Romans:

Principle : Giving Is To Be Done Cheerfully

In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul says, Each person should do as he has decided in his heart not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. God does not want a bunch of grumpy givers. You would refuse a gift if it was accompanied with bitterness and reluctance. God is not interested in those types of gifts either.

What I love about these four principles is that God does not only tells us how to give he leads us. God gave his first and best, his one and only. He gave us Jesus. Giving was a priority. The creator and owner of all things gave us an unfathomable gift, one that can never be matched. He gave us Jesus. He gave proportionately. The Father sent his one and only Son to die on a cross for our sins. He gave us Jesus. He gave sacrificially.

At times the principles of sacrificial giving and cheerful giving may seem to contradict each other. How can you give out of sacrifice and still be happy?

God shows us how.

Isaiah 53:10 reads, Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand the Lords pleasure will be accomplished.

God found pleasure in the crushing, or the crucifixion of his Son. But how? How can God find delight in the midst of the pain?

He focused on eternity.

Help Those Who Have Been Foolish

Lot foolishly chose to live in the wicked city of Sodom, and he was later taken prisoner from there. Despite Lots foolish behavior, Abram rescued him . This is symbolic of Gods love and faithfulness to us despite our foolishness.

If God has put you in a position to help people in need, do so even if their own foolish behavior has led to their poverty.

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Don’t Miss: What Is The Chronological Order Of The Bible

Prior To The Law Of Moses

Beginning in Genesis, the first human example of giving we find is Cain and Abel in Gen. 4.

Cain brought GOD an offering from the fruit of the ground, and Abel brought an offering of the firstborn of his flock and their fat .

GOD respected Abel’s offering because it was “better” than Cain’s , perhaps indicating that Cain didn’t offer his best to GOD or his heart wasn’t engaged. It is interesting to note that the Bible doesn’t tell us that this offering was required or requested by GOD. Regardless, Abel’s gift achieved the desired result and Cain’s did not.

It is also important to note that the Hebrew word for “offering” in Gen. 4:3 can also be translated “gift.” Throughout the Scriptures, the concepts of giving, sacrifices and offerings are virtually interchangeable.

Christian Quotes About Giving

A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.

You have two hands. One to help yourself, the second to help others.

When you learn, teach. When you get, give.

Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.

Its not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.

Give. Even when you know you can get nothing back.

As base a thing as money often is, yet it can be transmuted into everlasting treasure. It can be converted into food for the hungry and clothing for the poor. It can keep a missionary actively winning lost men to the light of the gospel and thus transmute itself into heavenly values. Any temporal possession can be turned into everlasting wealth. Whatever is given to Christ is immediately touched with immortality. A.W. Tozer

The more you give, the more comes back to you, because God is the greatest giver in the universe, and He wont let you outgive Him. Go ahead and try. See what happens. Randy Alcorn

In all of my years of service to my Lord, I have discovered a truth that has never failed and has never been compromised. That truth is that it is beyond the realm of possibilities that one has the ability to out give God. Even if I give the whole of my worth to Him, He will find a way to give back to me much more than I gave. Charles Spurgeon

You can always give without loving, but you can never love without giving. Amy Carmichael

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Proverbs 3:27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.

Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
